I love competitive puzzle games like Puyo Puyo, but have never actually played either Baku Baku or Super Puzzle Fighter myself. Street Fighter license aside, what is the superior game? They appear to be very similar in terms of basic mechanics. Baku Baku is far cheaper, but neither of them are particularly expensive (if you're getting the NTSC-J versions anyway). Are they similar enough that you only really need to play one of them, or do they have enough differences that they feel like distinctly different games and are both worth owning?

If you're wanting to play a competitive puzzle fighter you should go for Puzzle Bobble. Super Puzzle Fighter has a lot of bs moments in terms of making outrageous comebacks as the result of the losing player getting the diamond crystal and then making a ridiculous chain just when all hope looks lost. This is one of the main reasons why I'd favour Baku Baku.

While Baku Baku is fun and has a unique concept, it's overly cutesy and feels a little bland, especially in single player mode. My sister and I played the hell out of the multiplayer demo on one of the SEGA Flash discs, though.
My vote goes to Puzzle Fighter, though. For multiplayer fun, it just can't be beat. My friends and I would spend all night playing this even though we all had modern, sixth generation consoles. The cutified SF and DS characters were charming, and the arcade mode story had some great humour. I believe it has more game modes than Baku Baku too.
I would recommend both games. But if I had to choose one, it's definitely the superior Puzzle Fighter. I didn't rank it 6th on my top 20 Saturn games for nothing.

Puzzle Fighter is slicker and has more content (and probably better for 1 player) but there is alchemy at play in 2 player versus Baku Baku. There is something in the way it dishes out the symbols that just makes it such an entertaining game.
Typical Sega craftmanship. Baku Baku still looks pretty good too.
