Seeing a lot of these on ebay. Are they worth getting? I'm really getting into xmen vs Street fighter and I think games like Athlete kings will be good for it. Does it make a difference for games that suit it?

You're better off getting one of the Japanese variants.

I tried it and found the standard Virtua Stick sold in PAL areas and US a bit of a disappointment. The buttons in particular are quite spongy, rather than clicky and responsive. I didn't improve my gaming at all and ended up selling it . I'm not used to a stick though, so that was part of the problem.
There are others around that are meant to be better.

I agree I haven't found it that good for fighting games. Especially Virtua Fighter of all games. Due to the fact you need constantly tap directions. The games I've had the best experience with is any shmup that requires tapping the button to shoot like Cotton.

If you're planning on getting one for mainly 2D fighters then I'd stick to the pads. The model 2 pad is just too good for 2D fighters. Unless you spent a serious amount of time perfecting the sticks when these games were in the arcades I doubt you'd find any aadvantage with them. I echo what others have said, if you are going to get one, get the Japanese variant or a Hori Stick.

Playing fighting games with a gamepad, must be a generational thing, for those of my age (born at the end of the 70s) it is a bit of a heresy We had sticks not only in the arcades but even at home, I had a wonderful (for the times) arcade-style Quickshot joystick for my C64/Amiga.

Oh, and if you're not satisfied with the Saturn's fighting stick you can always mod it. It could be easier/cheaper than finding a hori stick in optimal condition.

I recently purchased a Japanese stick and love it, personally. Whether I prefer the stick or not depends mostly on the game. It's great for shooters especially, but also for many fighters. Like gtsr2977 above, as a child of the 70s myself I used to play everything on one of these.

I got the HORI SS stick, the stick isn't bad, feels sharp and springs back quickly, the buttons are a bit 'mushy' sort of like the Dreamcast agetec stick but worse, I'm hoping I can swap them out with better parts. Overall I love the size and clean shape of it.

Is it that easy, a simple swap? I'm planning to mod my dreamcast/agetec stick but I have to file the holes to make them fit the 30mm buttons, looking forward to doing it but it would have been nice to just swap them without any modification to the case!

If anyone wants to do the button mods for the Japanese arcade stick, I have a full set of seimitsu PS-15 buttonss and a Seimitsu LS-56-01 stick gathering dust in the corner. I agree I haven't found it that good for fighting games. Especially Virtua Fighter of all games. Due to the fact you need constantly tap directions. The games I've had the best experience with is any shmup that requires tapping the button to shoot like Cotton. Cotton has built in auto fire, you can enable it in the options. I think you might need one or two playthroughs to enable it but I'm not sure. Cotton Boomerang with the rapidfire melee attack is hilarious, you can box out most bosses easily.
