Okay due to popular demand we have a 3 way duel. It's Lobotomy's best efforts. Exhumed/Powerslave vs Quake Vs Duke Nukem. Which game do you prefer and why? As like before, you only get ONE vote, so think carefully before you vote. This one is gonna be a toughie I imagine. Can't add the video's to this poll yet as my Laptop wifi is playing up but will try add tomorrow. Happy voting. 😉
EXHUMED/POWERSLAVE
QUAKE
DUKE NUKEM 3D

Duke Nukem 3D, it's not even a contest here.

Duke Nukem 3D, it's not even a contest here. Fair enough. But what gives it the edge over the other two in your opinion?

NOT FAIR! Man sych you are really throwing out some tough polls here.
Sych this may sound silly but anyway you can change the name to Exhumed/Powerslave? I know its dumb but its just I feel the original name should be on there too... I probably take the Lobotomy stuff too much to heart but it was their original title (can even put the JPN name lol)
This is a very personal one for me. When I had my Saturn, I was a FPS nut. My last two Sega Saturn games were Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. And I always wanted to play Powerslave but could never find it.
I love all 3 games equally. Powerslave obviously is fantastic and is probably the most underrated classic FPS ever. An original Sega Saturn title too. Even included the amazing original Death Tank.
Quake is just amazing. It plays great and I even love the gritty look that it ended up with. Very enjoyable.
Duke Nukem 3D however was and is one of my favorite classic FPS single player experiences of all time. The Sega Saturn version was amazing back in the day because not only did it come out before the PS1 version, but it ran 100000x time better. I know the Saturn version had to sacrifice a chunk of levels but to me the great frame rate and the lighting effects far outweigh those. It also in North America included full Deathmatch and Co-op via Netlink. I had so many good memories of playing Dukematch over Netlink many years ago.
I really can't pick one, I usually call it a 3 way tie, but Ill chose Duke Nukem 3D just for the reasons I put and the personal reasons.

All changed for you Derek 😉 Loved reading about your history with all 3 games. Very insightful.
I might have to sleep on my decision for this one.

It was tough to vote. I almost wanted to wait a while to see which game was falling behind in the poll then vote for that game lol.

I won't vote since I haven't played the Saturn ports of Duke 3D and Quake, so I'm basing this post off the PC versions of Duke and Quake, and the Saturn version of Seireki 1999
Quake is actually my least favourite of the lot. The arsenal is super limited with nearly half of the weapons just being powered up versions of the same guns and the amount of rusty brown castles is both unappealing to look at and just makes the game extremely repetitive to the point that it feels like you've seen everything the game has to offer by the first chapter. I was amazed when I reached the level which has the graveyard in it just because it was the first memorable and visually distinct area I had seen in the game in ages. The core gameplay is solid enough that it's still a great game, but I generally find I get bored with FPSs fast due to how repetitive they can get, and Quake is about as repetitive as they come.
Duke 3D's an odd one. Duke Nukem is such an atrocious character in retrospect. People often bring up how funny Duke 3D was but honestly, the entire game is nothing but references with no actual jokes attached to them. Despite that, I fricking love Duke 3D. It's the complete opposite of the issue I had with Quake, every level is distinct and memorable and filled with unique assets. Finding secrets is even more fun since even they often have their own unique assets that you wouldn't see anywhere else. The levels are super fun to explore and the arsenal you have is super fun and very creative. The game is also super fast moving which makes it all the more intense. It's probably my favourite of the lot.
Seireki 1999 is super close though. The Metroidvania style is really cool and way ahead of it's time considering that this was before Prime. There's more of a focus on the level navigation as opposed to the shooting as a result which I actually really like, and the way the levels connect to each other and have multiple routes that take you to different levels is really neat. The shooting is still pretty good too with some more really creative weapons. It's biggest weakness is the enemy variety though, especially at the start of the game.

Duke is good, but Quake is sublime. The music, the atmosphere, the fact that it runs at all...

Duke is good, but Quake is sublime. The music, the atmosphere, the fact that it runs at all... Definitely. All of that. I really don't think I appreciated as kid just how hard it was to get that game running as well as it did. I just played it, enjoyed it, moved on. Amazing to think it just shouldn't have happened. Generally most people thought the lack of multiplayer was a huge issue but Quake 1 never gets enough credit for a very good single player.

Videos are now up. Will cast my vote later today after I've had a fair crack at all 3 contenders. It's been awhile since I've picked up and played Lobotomy's bests.

Exhumed by far!! I mean fps games are overrated in general and especially back in the day. Exhumed however is like a first person allround adventure game. I dare say better than the 3d Metroid games.

I'm excited to try Exhumed. Bought it off eBay a few years ago and recently got my Saturn up and running again, might be the next game I play.
Remember it getting a lot of hype in SSM back in the day.

All 3 games are impressive on the Saturn, but since that I now play the PC versions of Duke3D and Quake, I say that Powerslave is my favorite.

Quake may be the more technically impressive of Lobotomy's two conversions, but it's clearly pushing the Saturn in ways that forced some compromises, while Duke Nukem 3D takes full advantage of the Slavedriver engine to offer significant benefits when compared to its PC original, so for that reason I've given my vote to the middle child of this short-lived company's software family. Besides, it's their only Saturn game to feature NetLink support (not that we got to enjoy such an aspect over here). Despite the glowing praise, I've never really thought much of Exhumed - it was responsible for putting its makers on the map, yet as a standalone experience, it's just not something I rated all that highly. Oh, and the fact "DN3D" also includes Death Tank Zwei absolutely did not influence my vote!
