Haven't played Decathlete but Winter Heat is rock solid. Good controls, decent variety, and nice graphics for the Saturn.

winter heat. it's like a sequel and winter games. I have virtua athlete for dreamcast as the true god of summer games and this for winter games. winter heat may also have one of the best graphics anywhere on 32bit systems.

Winter Heat,
Always loved winter sports myself especially from where I live.
It along with Steep Slope Sliders were two nice late releases for the system.

3 comments for Winter Heat but only 1 tick in its box. Who's forgotten to add their tick?
Anyway my vote goes to Winter Heat. I love Athlete Kings but it's 2 player which is a huge negative and even on the hardest difficulty the CPU is never a good enough challenge. When I play Athlete King nowadays it's to beat old records.
In contrast I've done 4 player Winter Heat and it's great. Some of the events themselves I still find challenging so there's always something to work on. Plus the AI is not too shabby either.

This is a real tough one..... Both games obviously play very similar. Really comes down to what you prefer, summer games or winter games. Even though downhill is probably my favourite event out of both games overall I will pick athlete kings.
Agree with sych 100% on the massive let down of Athlete Kings only being 2 player. The running events especially, 100m, 110m hurdles and 400m sprints would be amazing fun with 4 players.

I hate Athlete Kings with a passion and so I've never played Winter Heat. I'll skip voting on this one.

I have both. Winter Heat is the better game in many ways. It has a wider range of events and 4 player support. But I just love Athlete Kings. I find it more fun - so it gets my vote. bultje112 mentions Virtua Athlete 2K for DC - that's a good game but it feels unfinished. It's as if it needed another few months of dev time and polish. There are events missing too (maybe they just hadn't got them working yet, but the arcade game seems to have a smaller roster of events too). It could have and should have been an awful lot better. I like the VMU support and how you can save your performances to it and have a friend go up against them in your absence! - sadly the game just doesn't seem to have that classic Sega atmosphere. Still prefer Athlete Kings to it - but if I had more than 3 people to play casually I'd probably opt for the DC game. But I'd go for Athlete Kings once casual play had ceased.

Getting hand cramps and carpel tunnel syndrome from a game is not my idea of a good game.

I never bought Winter Heat at the time, think I thought it was too similar to Athlete Kings which I already had and played to death. Have recently picked it up and was very impressed - the visuals in particular are surprisingly sharp for a Saturn game, and it's just as fun to play as AK.
Voted AK though as I'm just more familiar with it.

Need to check if my records are still on my backup memory cart!

My proudest AK moment is sub 12sec hurdles with Jeff Janson.
I quite like the hurdles event - probably is my favourite. The pole vault and high jump are enjoyable too when you get into a groove.
The discus is a bloody nightmare.

The discus is a bloody nightmare. I hate discus. I bought an Arcade stick because I thought it would help me improve on it but I'm still terrible at it. I don't know how people succeed in that event. At least I still have the 400m and 1500m. Those are two events I know I always come out ontop. 100m and the Hurdles were also my events at one point until Linkt101 dethroned me on the 100 and both Davyk and Link went below 12 seconds for hurdles. I'm still bitter lol
