Shining force III Shining the holy ark Dragonforce These are the best RPGs on the system in most people's opinion. They may not be the cheapest, or PAL for that matter, but if you like the genre you will have to consider these as essential.

All the above are expensive in either English format. #1 and 3 are circa £100.
Just play a burned copy for free if you are not bothered about the collectible element of the games.
Dark Savior and Legend of Oasis are mid priced, but more action RPGs.
Otherwise Shining Wisdom, Virtual Hydlide and Mystaria aren't expensive, though less good apparently.

and what do you consider expensive? Not more than £60 Virtual Hylide is quite cheap still at the moment and so is Mystara Realms of Lore but the latter is rising. Saturn RPG's just keep going up so you'll have to be quick. Games like Dark Savior, Shining Wisdom, Story of Thor 2 have already hit the £60 + mark or are on the cusp. However if you don't care about manual and cases and just want to play the game you find a few loose discs on Ebay which are always cheaper.

I'll second Mystaria, but definitely not Virtual Hydlide... *shudders*

Mystaria and Virtual Hydlide are both borderline unplayable, they run at a slideshow framerate. Dark Savior is okay but the controls really put me off. I just can't get used to them.
Most of the better Saturn RPGs were never translated, sadly. Shining Force III and PD Saga are both extremely good though, but so expensive.

I'll definitely agree with you about the frame rate of Virtual Hydlide perhaps being a major barrier to newcomers, though I never found Mystaria to be all that slow. As a turn-based RPG, the slower pace only really becomes noticeable during fights, and even those animations can be disabled.

and what do you consider expensive? Not more than £60 would you buy 3 average-good rpg's for 180 instead of 1 AAA for 180?

Yeah, but if neither SF3 nor Dragon Force appeals to you, then three more games of that same thing will amount to nothing.
I'd rather play Madou Monogatari or even Wakupuyo Dungeon in English.
