Well I never bought units which were obviously broken, had visible damage, that kind of thing. The ones I usually bought were ones where the owner complained the modchip didn't work (those only needed recalibrating the laser or the modchip wasn't installed right). And in many other cases, the owners just didn't have the cables to check the screen, saw that the console didn't spin the disk on power up, and concluded they were broken - what happened there was that because the battery died, the console kept asking for the time before spinning up the discs, but because they had no cables/controller, they couldn't tell. Or they just didn't have any hook-ups whatsoever, found a spare console, and put it up for auction cheap as a broken/untested console without ever checking it at all. Those usually only needed a cleaning and they were working perfect.
Nowadays actually broken units are more common since one of the chips on the power supply are no longer working right, the caps are getting spent and causing the console to crash, etc...
I know a guy in Australia who bought a devkit (the giant Sophia boxes), as broken. It just needed one of the caps replaced and it was immediately working fine.

Are you at all interested in Fenrir or Satiator (whenever that one comes out)?

I'm very much interested in getting a Satiator. Not much info is available to find out about release dates though.
And the guy was a bit of a dick on Twitter when asked about it. I havent heard of the other item.

So Professor ‘Abrasive’ is true to his name then huh?
Deunan seems like he’s got his quirks too, but I gotta say even limited availability and windows of ordering products...
it feels pretty lame by comparison how Abrasive has milked Patreon contributors over the years.
Fenrir seems like the only one with an untarnished reputation for now
But I love my Phoebe. I’m just deciding whether or not to order a Rhea too for a model1, leaning towards nah cause its overkill

It's a bit too early to tell if the Satiator will be better or not, since it's still in prototype phase. It will always have some quirks you cannot get around (like needing to boot into the CD menu first), but it has the potential to do incredible things that the Rhea won't be able to, such as 2-way communication with a PC.
But the software is simply not yet there. Which is understandable - the guy was doing his best to get the hardware out first; software changes will come in the future. I'm just hoping it'll be able to dump internal memory onto the SD card, to make backups of save carts... That's the one feature I desperately want.

That would be awesome! to have the 4MB cartridge in my Saturn, and do game saves to my hearts content on an SD card rendering my official backup game save cartridge a paperweight -- I think you've almost soldified that I should let my Rhea go to someone else who wants it more, and be happy with my Phoebe, not let paranoia of the Saturn its in dying get to me since I have no evidence its on its way out, and evaluate later if it does replacing the Saturn, or getting another Saturn and another ODE solution once the market gets more crowded I still haven't found a model 1. I think a few broken ones slipped past me in good shape, but as you mentioned, they could be broken for reasons beyond "doesn't Read discS" the seller isn't fully aware of

Saving on the SD card would work the same was as an AR though, meaning you have to copy stuff over. So it's for backing up your saves, which is still great because you can have an entire save cartridge connected and saved in one go.

Transferring between internal storage and action replay feels like a pain. I don't have an action replay though. I also have an older rmenu build that does in game reset back to the rmenu game list instead of to Saturn dash as an AR in game reset bypass. -- I know its entirely a personal decision but what would you do if me? get the rhea, and then decide to fit It in a model1 or resell it later if I don't find use for it in my collection? or just let it pass? I don't think ill have another opportunity to get rhea for its asking price from Deunan any time soon if I pass up this one and only a few days left to pay really wrestling with this one, more than I thought I would

No reason not to get a Rhea when you can resell it for 3x the price even if you don't want it.

No reason not to get a Rhea when you can resell it for 3x the price even if you don't want it. That’s true but the market seems crowded on eBay. Might just want To give it up to someone else on waitlist. Then again that someone else on the waitlist could be only it to resell vs me conflicted whether to fit it with a model 1 or resell if I don’t have use The model 1’s on eBay suck right now
