So much hate towards RSG. I can kinda understand this because of the crazy resale price it demands but its a good game. I bought it for nostalgia really. My best friend and I use to play this game for hours before he moved about 5 years ago. And he was the one that introduced me to the Saturn in the first place, if not for him I probably wouldn't even own one now.
Yeah Metal Slug is fun but there is pretty bad slow down in some parts of the game, especially while playing two players. Still a great purchase though, picked it up complete w/ spine for $20.

Nice set of games neonecko! All are great games excluding Radiant Silvergun. davyk: Metal Slug on Saturn is a solid port. It's missing some animation, and it slows down a lot at times, but its certainly playable. The Neo CD version totally destroys it though. And Metal Slug 3,4,5 on PS2? EWWW, they all have nasty filters that can't be disabled. Slowdown irritates me so I'll pass on the saturn version. I quite like the slugs 3-5 on PS2 (in PAL land we have to buy them as separate titles - think 4 and 5 are together on one disk on other regions) - they run at full-screen and at 60Hz which in PAL land is a blessing - nice bonus features with 3 too (which don't appear in the Metal Slug anthology version - I have that for PS2 as well). I can't comment too much about the filters as I've never seen it run "native". All I can say is via RGB SCART they look great to me.. I'd get the Wii anthology which offers 60Hz but the control options are borked (no classic controller support and with GC controllers the dpad doesn't work!) RSG is excellent but not for everyone - see my review in the user reviews section.

neonecko - I don't hate RSG, and the price has nothing to do with it. (I collect Neo Geo AES carts). I imported RSG back when it was first released, and I simply didn't enjoy it. Its not my style of shooter. Now I used to just say, "It's not my thing," but most people always give me the "You don't understand it!" or "It's too expensive for you!" and my favorite, "All Saturn fans have to like RSG!" Over the years I've gotten quite bitter. Don't take it personally, I'm just getting old. davyk: In the USA Metal Slug 4&5 were released on two discs in one case. They are badly filtered and they flicker horribly. The stand alone JP releases are the same. Admittedly I haven't touched the PAL copies though. The Japanese version of the Anthology, "Metal Slug Complete" does include classic controller support, but the ports have many problems besides the controls.

No offense taken, I'm really starting to get into shmups so I decided I might as well. Theres really just too many on the Saturn to obtain them all! Definitely going to try to pick up Battle Garegga and Blast Wind but those also demand a high price. Shmups are for the rich man, especially if your hardcare and start buying boards.

Given the slow parts (control of ship, slowdown and general sluggish pace), repetetive music and (overly?) complex scoring system of RSG, there's no wonder some find it difficult to get into. The fantastic visuals, incredibly solid programming and the fact that it offers an experience no other game can replicate makes it, in my view, the only game that can justify such a hefty price tag. Battle Garegga is a fantastic shooter, but it's still a shooter and it's price tag is growing away from the quality of the game. RSG on the other hand is sometimes a shooter, sometimes a RPG, sometimes a puzzle, sometimes an anime and always something else.

I LOVE Game Tengoku. My favorite "parody shooter", a truly great game. However it has the worst designed menu system ever. If you don't speak Japanese, it will take some time to figure it all out. Totally worth it though.

yikes....most of these games have a guide in gamefaqs - not this one though! Maybe when I figure it out I'll include it in a review. Might need some help though.

The basic game modes are easy enough. It just has a ton of little tweaks that don't seem to do a whole lot at first glance, though they can really alter how the game is played.

Sounds like my Japanese copy of Puyo Puyo 2 - it has hordes of options - that are explained in a great article in wikipedia. (search for puyo puyo tsu)

I have to say there's no sign of flicker (at least what I can discern). I'm playing on a CRT - maybe that makes a difference? The only PS2 game in which I have noticed flicker is in Gradius III+IV. In Gradius IV mode the ship select screen and the weapon gauge at the bottom of screen seems to flicker - a bit like some sort of interlacing effect - more of a shimmer. Its no big deal as the main game screen area doesn't have it.

Lack of filter is what causes flicker on an interlaced display.
So if something is flickering... it's not being filtered...
As far as I can tell, Metal Slugs on Ps2 are 2x'ed without filtering, and on XBOX are 2xed with an anti-flicker filter (The XBOX by default has flicker filtering enabled, the only way to disable it is to use the PROG SCAN output or for the developer to turn it off in the software).

Have just had my first session with Game Paradise. This is a classy product - totally out of keeping with the reputation that Jaleco have.
There seems to be 2 main modes - arcade mode (with TATE option). This features the straight-up game with 1 or 2 players, but it also has a time attack mode with you playing for high score while you try to complete a special level arrangement against a time limit with loads of powerups and bonuses - much like the Parodius Omake levels. Excellent stuff.
Then there's another mode (I'm guessing Saturn mode) that has 5 different ways to play as far as I can see, including variations on the time/score attack modes from the arcade mode.
Graphics and sounds are top notch, and there's 5 or 6 characters to choose from too which does make a difference. There's a nice powerup system that lets you grab two options that are mini versions of the other characters.
Early days yet, and I'm flushed with novelty, but this is close to being one of my favourites on the Saturn (and I have the entire Parodius series, Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden, Twinkle Star Sprites, RSG, Souky and DoDonpachi to compare it to).
By the way - another thumbs up to Genki games. They are a bit dear sometimes, but this was £18 + £4 p&p which is the best price I've seen this going for. The postage is a smidgen high - but its next business day special delivery, the packaging is top notch, and the game is in immaculate condition - spine card and all.
