On Saturn I actually prefer optimised PAL games, as my Saturn has a switchless mod and I can simply force those games into 60hz , rather than deal with an optimisation which may or may not be good I also have a switchless mod Saturn so I have the exact same set up as you but not all PAL optimised Saturn games were fully optimised, some were partly optimised, either missing the speed or screen size. Even the PAL games that are optimised like i.e Sega Rally, Nights, Panzer Dragoon, Guardian Heroes e.t.c they never play at completely FULL screen, theres always mini boarders at the top and bottom of the screen and on the sides. And when you switch those games to 60hz vis switchless they obviously overscan and parts of screen dissapear. With JPN & NTSC releses you don't have to worry about any of that mess at all as the games will display correctly in full screen. Most modern good TV's can get rid of the small boarders at the top and bottom of the screen but the boarder usually to the left hand side of the screen still remains. I'd much rather a PAL game was unoptimised because at least when you switch it to 60hz via a switchless reset it uses all of the screen and adds the 17.5% speed and the boarders completely dissapear. Not the case with PAL optimised games you will still get some boarders and even when you try and expand the screen by switching it to 60hz, overscan still appears and some games run glitchy. PAL Guradian Heroes is a classic example of this. randomisedgaming.tumblr.com/post/146372446412/the-complete-european-sega-saturn-60hz-guide-toall pal optimized games run in full screen on my tv. do you use an hdtv?

I noticed I made a typo , I actually meant optimised games on the Saturn. I try and avoid optimised games on the Saturn , Mega Drive too actually. Another game I wouldn't mind changing would be UMK3 , the PAL game runs at the correct speed (or at least feels like it) , but has borders, its another example of a rubbish conversion . problem is that the US version is hard to find umk3 pal version imo is fine if you play it 60hz. the game wasn't really optimized except for a slight speed increase. I in fact much prefer the pal umk3 in 60hz running a little bit faster.

Yes I have. LCD HDTV. Most HD TV's will have this problem. Luckily on mine, I have an option to expand the screen with a few options on my TV remote. The boarder on the left hand side never disappears though. This always occurs whenever a game is played in 50hz. All 60hz games are fine and use up the whole screen. Good thing is playing certain pal optimised game at 60hz actually makes the gameplay so much better. For e.g PAL VF2, Last Bronx and Fighters Megamix are alot better when played at 60hz. The slight overscan is worth it as those games play so much better with the unintended additional 17.5% speed.

Well, got a nice copy of night striker S with spine... and I think it may be my last game for the system for a good while. At over 100 titles, no rpgs with all the best arcade ports, it's time to sit back and enjoy my collection....uploading pics soon.

Replayable fun to be had on that game. I've also just pick up my last Saturn title for awhile and purchased Guardian Force. I hope it turns out to be as good as how much it cost me.

Damn, £65 for spined Night Strikers is a steal, good find marc. I guess I do not watch carefully enough, or you'd have had an opponent on this one.
I second the goodness of Guardian Force too, tank shooters for not everybody is better than tank battle for everybody (see a certain very popular mobile app).
Recently, I've also been buying a lot to complete my collection, but am ashamed to post picture since it would only show how weak and unreasonable I am when it comes to collecting. Small list : - Panzer Saga US - Final Fight Revenge - Other Capcom 2d fighting - Some nice puzzle like Magical Drop and Puyo Puyo Sun - Capcom Generations 3 & 4 to complete the full shmups set, with obscure shmup titles in those collections.

Final Fight Revenge is an awesome game. Not to everyone's tastes but I still get enjoyment from it. Hope you didn't pay too much for it.

I must admit I did not launch it yet. The reviews I read are quite bad, guess it came out too late and was not the FF game the fan of the arcade game expected. I paid what it goes for today I guess, maybe a little less in the $250 range. Which is not reasonable as stated earlier.

Capcom generations 1 is the 1943 collection. Essential shooters, really good ports. The first jp game I bought along with a region converter, pal console and 3rd party controller. from chip shop Liverpool, circa 2000. Little trip down memory lane there. Paid £80, expensive at the time.

Nice memory, we all have to start somewhere with the Saturn. My GF bought mine for Christmas, with Radiant Silvergun and a Virtua Stick. Can you find a better girlfriend ? Now she's my wife and mother of (almost) 2 kids
