Hey,
I just purchased my first Sega Saturn yesterday and seem to be having an issue unsure if its the controller or the console when I booted it up for the first time the battery had died so I replaced it, I wasn't aware I had to insert a disc in order for me to navigate the select language and time menu's so that took some investigating anyway the real issue I'm facing is once a game has been booted up in all its glory and it reaches the "press start" screen no matter how many times I press start the games don't work I have had my controller apart and cleaned it and rubbed down the contacts with the help of youtube but to no avail do any of you know if this is a console issue or the controller?
*It turned out to be the controller so the start button just doesn't seem to work but I got a new one and have been happily playing all my games*

You shouldn't have to have a disc in to navigate the console settings.

Any Idea what may be causing the issue?

I'd check if all the contacts in the cable have continuity in them.

Sounds like an iffy controller, cable or port.
