They are all china made, no matter the engraving.
It's possible that the tray needs to be adjusted, but I don't know how to measure that. As long as the calibration voltages are right, the laser should be set up fine. Is it only burned games you have problems with, or also burned audio discs? Is it possible that it's not the laser, but your modchip at fault?

Is it possible that it's not the laser, but your modchip at fault? Thank you for your answer mate. I’m having problems with burned audio discs as well. The tray is well adjusted. I tried to lift it and push it down and it’s definitively where it should be. The modchip is ruled out as well. It’s getting 5v from underneath the cd drive and in one of my many attempts I could load a backup. Also checked continuity with a multimeter. The lens struggles too much and I arrived to the conclusion it was almost doa.. Unless somebody can point me in another direction. I have to admit that the first night I installed the lens it was almost working decently, as it would load different backups after 2 or 3 attempts. Then it’s when I presume it ran out of juice for burns. I spent too many hours trying to calibrate.. Different media, imgburn, cdrdao, different speeds… I still have my old backups from the 90s (mint) recorded at 1x, 2x and 4x and nothing… The only disc that gets more success is a backup recorded recently at 16x in a CMC disc, and in order to get that success, I have to load a pressed disc and open the lid after the Sega logo and insert the burn from the cdplayer menu. Odd, isn’t it? Cheers

If the laser is calibrated, the way you burn the disc should be irrelevant. It only makes a difference when the laser can't read things.
Unfortunately we don't have the service manual for the later revision Saturns, which use a very different CD drive, so we don't know the exact way to calibrate it. But even if we had the manual, you'd probably require an oscilloscope. The closest we have is that youtube video where it is explained how you have to measure a point on the drive for voltage difference between idling and reading. If you calibrated the drive according to that, then I don't know what else you can do. You also have to accept that the optical pickups currently in circulation are basically Chinese bootlegs of the real thing - they either work or they don't.
Perhaps you should consider investing in a ODE instead, or the Satiator.

I have a Japanese model 1 on the way. If none of the new lasers work, I might invest in something more reliable, as you suggested

I don't think it's possible to tell from that website, even if I could recognize them.

Well, good news! I bought a spindle of 100 Taiyo Yuden silver inkjet printable CDR80SPY100SBZM made in Japan.
Two new lasers on the way for my pal Saturn. Japanese Saturn on the way, too.
Somethjng must work eventually! XD
Cheers!

The lasers might be fine and are not getting adequate power, e.g the drive board might need recapping.
I've used EM-30L to lub drive rails.

The Japanese Saturn I got works flawlessly! The Taiyo Yuden spindle arrived, too. Those discs are worth every penny

Hi,
Just received those two replacement lasers for my pal Saturn. Both are working, but one of them makes a high pitch noise when reading burns (no noise with retail discs). I didn’t calibrate them, just desoldered the blob to “activate” them.
What could be causing this annoying noise?
Thanks in advance!

What cold make a laser make noise when reading burns? Simply bad quality? The higher voltage it reaches when reading burns? I got a full refund on this noisy one, btw

I imagine it was some sort of coil whine.
