I really love this game. I played both pc 3dfx and psx director's cut version back in the day. I beat this game to death and never got tired of it.
This game deserves some credit as one of the first of its genre. Sure there are elements that feel dated, still I think that the following key aspects make this game a classic: The story is great (even better if you are playing for the first time and don't know nothing about it), and the scenery is beautifully rendered. I know that RE2 improved a lot of aspects from the first one, but at this point you already knew about the virus and stuff that was behind the monsters so much of the surprise factor from the first game was lost. Also, I don't find the city environment as appealing as the mansion.
I haven't got the saturn version, but it's on my wish list. Will I come across a fair priced copy, I will undoubtly pick it.

It's the best game on Saturn, usually doesn't appear on people's lists though because it's not an exsclusive, it's regarded as a PlayStation series.

Why is it the best game on Saturn, then?
Bearing in mind that, that is a pretty bold statement to make about a game.

The first one is rubbish but the 3rd one is excellent. I just hate the way you always run out of ammo and the game degenerates into running around weaving in and out of zombies trying not to get hurt.

I just started playing this last night. First time I ever touched or really seen the game so it was a new experience for me.
...I laughed so hard at the dialog. It was so funny that it would always kill the horror mood. The moments I'd be like "Oh crap!" I'd be more like "HAHAHAHAHAHA!!" with tears running down my face.
The beginning FMV was so cheesy too! And the actors were hilariously bad!
...fun game though! I died a few times. My first death was on the first zombie in the game. Haha! I tried knifing his foot then he ate me.
Then the dogs that attacked me. I just shotgunned them, laughed, then some other zombie ate my foot and I died.
The ceiling coming down part had me a bit worried at first when the doors were locked. I was like "Uh... crap..." and I actually tried shooting the doors. Haha!
Great fun!

for me Res 1 is like tomb raider, by that i mean it was wicked when it first came out, but is much too dated to play now. The controls are to akward and the graphics to blocky.
i wouldn't have the patience to play in now to the end.

I couldn't wait to get RE for Saturn. I missed it at released and never found a second hand copy. So when RE2 and Code Veronica were released on Dreamcast I got them and loved them. Then about a year ago I managed to find a copy of Saturn RE and I have to say I was disapointed with it, especially after all the hype it got from SSM. Maybe it was revolutionary at the time, but the sequels outclass it infinitely.

and I had been a little disapointed, when I played game for the first time. Graphics was ugly (polygons is so big and it was to hard for me. Despite graphics game is really good and I recommend this game for all Saturn owners (must have, if you don't play on the playstation)

Controls are good, but you need a little learning-time .

If anyone's interested in playing through Resident Evil but loses patience with the Saturn original (I could definately understand why), the Gamecube remake is brilliant and still managed to shake me up real good. It's very true to the original, but with much more tolerable graphics for this day and age. Not every game ages as well as the likes of Street Fighter unfortunately, and you really have to place yourself back in the 90s to see why Resident Evil was so good - or let the remake do the talking.
