Hi guys, i'm portuguese and this is my firts post Well, i bought yesterday a Sega Saturn in a local fair. I was so happy to start playing but i can't, i have this problem: Everything works perfectly fine, it has not been modded and the laser is not stuck being hindered from reading the outside ring on the games (i took it apart to check). I put a game in, the system starts up perfectly fine, the screen goes into normal view, it says 'checking disc type' like usual, then it sticks in cd player mode and plays the audio tracks on the game cd. I've tryed with Virtua Fighter 2 and Sega Rally, i know that the games are perfectly fine, but the console doesn't reads it... Help me please.

Most likely your laser is on it's way out.
Open your Saturn, pull out all the ribbon cables gently from their connectors and re-seat them back where they were, then try booting a game again.
Failing that you need to adjust the laser bias...
There is a little plastic screw in the rear of the laser assembly (usually blue or orange) put a small screwdriver into this and turn it 5 degrees or so clockwise.
Now try to boot a game, if it does not boot turn the screw another 5 degrees clockwise and try booting again. Repeat until it reads the disc or you conclude your Saturn is dead.
Mick.

on one of my earliest saturn modding efforts, before i'd thoroughly read about the laser, i'd managed to stop it from being able to recognise original saturn games by messing around with some of the other rotatable resistors/inductors (or whatever they are) on the cd drive board. so like your problem, it would think original games were audio cd's, several hours of messing with them again managed to get it to read original games again, but every maybe 3 out of 20 tries it wouldnt work so it never made a perfect recovery...

ahh man i feel sorry for you. how much did it cost you? It was cheap (well, i guess)... Sega Saturn complete (with this problem), 2 controlers (working fine) and two complete games (i guess they work, but i'm not sure, because the Saturn doesn't give me certains). It costs 20€ I really need to buy another one, i can't still not playing this great classics of all time.

I'm from Porto, if you live near by I can give you my contact and try to give some advice! But yeah, it's seems like the laser's dead. I know a few stores where that still have a Sega Saturn, post more if you would like to know!
