if it works for booting up, it it works for playing games, it it works for memory management... ....why doesn't it work for 4MB RAM games? =P. Really want to try Street Fighter Zero 3! Could be an early cart, those were 1mb only. Open it up and check the memory modules (or post a picture of the board). Sold to me by Rob as being 4MB compatible. Has the 4M ^ v 1M symbols on in the corner of the sticker. I did take it apart years ago, probably to post on this board way back when... (first got it in 2009). Will try and find out what I found out then again, but I've a feeling it does have the correct modules. Anyhow, I had assumed it faulty, and thought I would need to buy a 4mb cart... it's just that hearing recently again, about dodgy cart ports, made me wonder if it was simply a pin connection issue?

Which Rob sold it to you? Is this Rob as in Console goods uk? If you are gonna buy another 4 in 1, I'd recommend the older versions with the serial port on top. The worksmanship on some of the newer one are quite shoddy.

I bought my cart over a decade ago but neglected to buy any imported Saturn games until about 18 months ago. It works fine for the most part but I recently finally got around to trying the copy of Vampire Savior I got a while ago and I'm presented with a screen in Japanese each time which I think says I need to put in a 4MB RAM cart for it to load any further. Not sure why this is, X-Men vs SF works fine so I would have thought VS would too. Anyone experienced similar issues? A few batches of cards only worked on one of those and needed a manual fix. But it is just as likely that the cart doesn't connect fine. Did some research, pretty certain my cart is one of those that can't play a lot of the later Capcom games. I've seen a guide for how to fix it, but I have neither the tools nor technical skill to do that! Pondering right now whether to buy a new up-to-date AR cart or getting someone to Mod my Saturn (I have an official 4mb RAM Cart that came with X-Men vs SF already) as I'd like to play Vampire Savior, as well as get MSH v SF and Pocket Fighter eventually.

Good question; I wish I knew what a multimeter was. The obvious thing to do here is try another cartridge, but then of course you'd have to buy another cartridge... Could be worth it, though, if you have an additional use for another type of cart. (sorry for the late reply but I didn't received any notification) I tried a memory card and it worked, but then I noticed that the memory card has far less contacts than the AR cartridge, it doesn't need all the pins. However, out of exasperation, later I "opened" the cartridge slot (with a box cutter) and tried to bend the pins, now the AR is recognized but starts only the games of my region! It freezes when I try to start a Japanese game. Maybe I didn't bend all of them (I need many magnifying glasses just to see them), I'll try again when I'll have some time. Anyway, are there somewhere the schematics that say which pin does what? UPDATE: I region patched some Japanese games (Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter and Metal Slug) and they work. Is the RAM cart required or just optional for these games? If the ram expansion works I'll leave it as it is and either region patch the games or region mod the console (quite easy compared to the 60Hz mod, which I already did).

Do you own a PAL machine or a US machine? PAL If that's the case you'll definitly need to get your Saturn modded as games like MSH VS SF and Vampire Saviour won't run properly in 50HZ PAL mode. I'm not sure if that's the case for all RAM compulsary Saturn games but I do know those two games will have issues in 50hz. Interesting you mention the newer AR4in1 carts being more reliable, in my experience its the other way around. The older ones with serial ports are more reliable. Had one for 10+ years and still works. Bought a newer version for my second Saturn and it broke down after two years. Same happened to this guy in the video, although his one just never worked full stop. www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-vP0R5ZJqU

I have a 4-in-1 cart as well. Version says it is 2.02. It boots to the menu I can use the cheats, memory manager, and boot imports. Probelm is when I boot marvel vs street fighter or X-men vs street fighter I get the screen full of japanese with 4M on it. Any ideas or would the cart not be comptible with those games? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm new to the saturn.

It's possible that you have the early AR carts that only have 1mb ram in them, which is why the game gives you the message "please insert a 4M RAM cart". Do any other games work that require 4mb ram?

I tried Metal Slug X and Cotton 2 as well. Ram is not recognized for them as well. Seems to not be working at all. But like I said every other function of the cart is working. I think maybe the ram is bad.

I think maybe the ram is bad. Very strange if everything else is working. Maybe try taking the cart out and blowing inside the cartridge slot and try putting it in again. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding that sweet spot in cartridge slot. If that doesn't work then Sounds like you've got a standard Action Replay with no additional ram features. I think 2.2s are known to be a bit dodgy. Did you see my video link above?

I had no problems with my cart... Until one day all of the save files got corrupted. I was almost done with dragon force. I had a LOT of saves on there. So I cleared them all and now started over with a few games. *sigh*

Mine works now, it was the Saturn's fault (bought it very cheap from ebay), I had to open the cartdrige's "comb" and bend the pins.

Just thought I'd report that I've been playing X Men vs Street fighter on a PAL Saturn. Using the Action Replay 4M Auto. v2.02. Game runs well on the whole. There seems to be the odd bit of sound distortion but its not a big deal. I only noticed it because i was looking for it.
The only problem so far has been it seemed to crash and reset when I completed the end boss battle. Bit worrying but it doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the game.
