Well, you sure wouldn't be able to use the rest of the buttons. That's for sure. If you're playing Virtua Fighter, then no. If you're playing the rest of the Saturn library, then yea.

I'm going to be playing the Japanese shmup games. I think with most of them, I will get away with 3 buttons? Anyone have any experience with the quality of this stick? I'm in desperate need of a good arcade stick, and at present, this seems to be my only lead.

I also might be able to pick up a 3 button Hori stick.´, but can't find much information about it. Personally im cool with the three buttons, since most shooters only use 1 or 2. Just as long as the stick is good quality in fine and dandy.

Got it now, and i've been using it quite alot the last few days. IMO, it's an amazing stick. The quality is very good, especially the actual stick. The only real drawback except the fact that it's only 3 buttons is that there's no autofire options. I'll do a review of the stick on my youtube channel sometime in the near future. It's very worthwile to pick up if you play alot of shooters.

No auto-fire? Shouldn't arcade style buttons be easy to mash/tap?
But it sounds quite appealing. Too bad a high number of my Saturn games uses more than three buttons. Otherwise I'd pick one up. :/
(Surprisingly, despite the fact that I'm well known as a shmup lover, only four out of my twenty-six games are shmups! (In fact, I kinda just shocked myself...!!))

Yea they're very easy to mash, it's just that i hate mashing to begin with. =)
But overall i like it. Shame that my joystick is a little worn so it's kinda loose. Most annoying...
