Hi all,
I have a odd Saturn, it was purchased in Hong Kong it is a NTSC Sega Saturn (white), however, it has a 220 UK power supply. It also has been modded. It seems to play anything I put in it.
I am using a Japanese RGB Scart lead to a 32 inch LG LCD 720p telly.
Image looks fine, however, I was suprised that the image takes up the entire screen, 16.9 full, I expected it to be 4.3 just like when I run games via SSF.
Is this normal?
I searched the forums before posting this, as I didn't find any previous posts, if this has been asked before, please forgive me this is my first post here.
Cheers,
Jeff

That's just your TV stretching the picture.
RGB Scart is SUPPOSED to tell the television whether to run in 16:9 or 4:3 mode but occasionally some hardware will tell the TV to operate in the wrong mode or just not tell it at all... in which case it will automatically switch whatever it does automatically.
Some TVs actually have the issue with RGB Scart that they simply don't allow you to adjust the picture at all, which is a pain in the ass on TVs with a widescreen aspect ratio since it means you are stuck...
Although this shouldn't be the case with any recent TV...

You were absolutely right, my tv was the culprit.
I'm an idiot, had aspect ratio set as 16.9 for AV1, set it to original and now all as it should be.
I appreciate your time and advice.
I was told that on most UK TV's that it is the first scart port that is only capable of RGB, and that the second port would just do composite etc..
Is this correct?
I've been living in the UK for 3 years, but I am from Canada so SCART is a bit of a new cable type for me even though I've heard about it.
Would there be any issue using a UK LCD tv with a NTSC-J console + a Japanese RGB scart lead?
Kind regards,
Jeff

There really is no such thing as a "Japanese SCART lead." The Japanese 21pin RGB cable is not a SCART cable. They are wired differently, and no you can't plug one into a UK TV without modification. You can use a UK Saturn SCART lead with a JP Saturn though.

From what you say, it seems like you have a Asian unit (that's not Japanese/Korean), and considering where you purchased it, it seems to make sense.
I'm interested in what you're saying about the modded bit. Does it have switch of some sort where you can switch regions, or does it just read whatever games you put in without any additional effort on your part? I'm curious as only BIOS-hacked saturns has the capability to do the latter (as far as I'm aware), and I've never seen one of these myself.
The only other possibility is you having one of the random games that are multi-region...

As it is exactly like a traditional scart connection found here in the uk. I'm unsure of what to refer to these odd RGB cables if not RGB SCART. I purchased this RGB lead from within the UK, that was specifically wired to allow RGB from Saturn to UK tv. It seems to work far better than the standard scart lead I had before. Cheers, Jeff

It is modded in the sense it will play "backups" cdr's etc. You are right though, it is an Asian unit, as it is NTSC-J, but with a 220/240 volt power supply. There is a seller on ebay who is shipping an almost identical unit internationally from Thailand. cgi.ebay.co.uk/170483064769Mine looks identical, same specs, aside from the mod and mine had a VCD car pre-installed in the expansion bay. Kind regards, Jeff
