Heya, Today, after "fixing" my Hitachi Saturn by simply rubbing some alcohol on the lens, I've decided to try and replace the lens on my non-working NTSC model 1 saturn. As far as physical replacements etc I had no problem. Took one lens, swapped out for the new one (Optima 150s), but the problem is so: While it's moving along the assembly well, it won't try to read anything. I've re-seat the ribbon cable into it, but it seems that thecable going from the assembly into the lens is a bit loose (I can see the pins) - the part that seats into the mobo below the lens. Could it be my reason? Thanks. Ah. and I did try to adjust the pot with no avail.

Taking a look at what's going on with the lid off, on startup, the lens in the laser assembly goes up twice, down twice then stops. Is it a sign of anything? I don't see any light coming out of it though.

Another find: Comparing this to my working saturn's operation in the same conditions, it does the same, however, I can see its red laser burning there, I can't with the non-working saturn. Do you guys think the diode on the replacement lens could be burned out? Obviously it can't detect a disc if it doesn't emit light.

I think you're mostly answering your own queries here, either the diode is gone, or there's no power going to it.

No power? Could the reason be a badly connected ribbon cable then?

Well yes it COULD be, it could be a hundred things, it's very difficult without me being able to put a multimeter on everything. Try jiggling the loose ribon cable while it's on and see if it makes any difference.

I will a little later on today... and buy a multimeter as well!

No power? Could the reason be a badly connected ribbon cable then? Well, you could try re-connecting it for one.

Heya, that didn't work. I'll be taking it to my friends' dad, he's an electoronics techie, we'll see what he says. Either way, it must be repaired for the sake of me preserving my retro consoles. I don't want to be the one that buys more consoles instead of just fixing his broken ones! If it does come through, I'll write up a guide for the Optima150s replacement.

Heya, Well, we finally got it tested, that is, all connections on the lens+drive assembly+ribbon cable slots etc... the problem, according to him, is in the ribbon cable that goes from the assembly directly into the lens... and since all the connections we tested with a multimeter were alright, I guess that he's correct. Anybody got a 20-pin ribbon cable to sell to me? I'll pay well. Anything (not) to buy another console for parts

I have a few of those somewhere in boxes as I moved recently and haven't unpacked 100% -- if no one else steps up in a short timespan, give me a shout. I'll send you one for the cost of postage (Prob a couple bucks or so, unless you're in Australia, which then would be cheaper). BTW, if ribbon cables are faulty and not connecting the laser assembly to the motherboard properly, here's the effect you'll get 100% of the time -- once you get to the CD menu, the objects on the lower corners (usually a green cube), will look all blown up to a fatter sphere-ish shape, and the color will be red. Take a look at this clip if you're unsure of what I'm talking about -- 10 secs in for the "green cubes", about 42-43 seconds in for the red-sphere look. The guy's playing music, so the object will be rapidly inflating/deflating with the music, but in your case, if your motherboard isn't "seeing" the laser assembly, the shape will be permanently blown up and red once you pop in to the CD menu. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpPHFIed7nE

Yup, never bothered to find out, but I do have something similar. If nobody does come up, I'll be grateful if you helped me out. Just remember that it's the one from the assembly into the lens (the thin one).
