Probably some random dust caused a short somewhere. I've bought busted Saturns for dirt cheap in the past, that worked flawless after cleaning up the dust from the insides. You only need to cool the PSU, by the way. The rest of the machine is not prone to overheating, and even the PSU rarely does it. I do have one model that tends to overheat without an extra fan inside. Damn, that's a VA7 PAL board... looks like there are at least two PAL boards I'm missing. Never seen this type before in a PAL console. As for modded saturns, check the one I did before: 50/60 switch, full binary regionswitch to enable all 16 regioncodes, and the video connector desoldered in place of a RGB SCART out. Sadly this machine eventually got busted as I used it as my main testing bed. If I knew that VA0 PAL Saturns are so damn rare, I wouldn't have experimented on it at all...

I'm missing VA7 and VA13 PAL Saturns, and have VA0 (on the picture, busted), VA1, VA3 (busted), VA5, VA9 ones. I have to buy at least one another VA5 and VA9 wince I know that there were at least two manufacturers for these models. My VA3 model is busted but I'm not in hurry to replace it since the board is identical to VA5 other than some small details. I want to buy all the different boards to document the differences between them, the "evolution" of the hardware design if you will. It would also make a good source for modding info too in the future, since there's a lot of half- or mis-information on the net. I've found VA0, VA7 and VA13 ones the most rare... only saw one of those so far.

awesome mods. reading this post reminded me of the current saturn i have. I found one at a thrift store for $12, and it worked, but
when i took it home i noticed some weird yellow stuff on it. I didnt
know what it was. I cleaned it up and then had it sitting on my
shelf for a few weeks, i noticed that the yellow stuff was back on
the saturn, it was like oozing out of the saturn, and it smelled
really bad. So one day i took it apart. It was so nasty inside. I
think an animal peed on it or something. I had to completely gut
and clean the thing. The circuit board didn't get to dirty. but i had
to soak all the plastic in water and soap. Also there was a bunch
of dead bugs in the thing. I put it back together and it still works.

QUITE POSSIBLY... the most disgusting Saturn related story I have ever read. Over breakfast, no less...
