Hey all,
The scart that came with my saturn claimed to be rgb, but its not 21 pin, on inspection it has some of the rgb pins but not all, and when on the tv it constantly switches between what it thinks is rgb and composhite.
Are even the official scarts fully wired? this scart is missing pins on both ends

You only actually need pins for Red, Green, Blue and sync to get a stable picture, then two more for sound left and right. Most TV's also need the signal pin for RGB up too. It's possible that's not getting enough voltage and that's why you're having problems.

Its an NTSC console and the scart is one that came with it, its now not giving me anything but composhite so not sure if its the cable or the saturn, going to order a new cable with raw sync to test it

It'll be the cable, probably using pin 1 for voltage to the RGB up signal pin. Retro console accessories seems to be on holiday at the mo unfortunately.

Same thing. NTSC machines supply c-sync where PAL cables expect stable DC voltage. The c-sync voltage is sometimes high enough to make the TV switch to RGB mode, but sometimes it's too low, and then the TV switches back to Composite mode. Common issue and I'm really repeating myself explaining this.
You either have to get a ntsc-specific cable, or mod your console to remove c-sync.
Personally I'd get a ntsc-specific cable that uses normal composite sync - that will work on ALL Saturns. Raw Sync cables could potentially damage your sets if you accidentally use them on a PAL machine (+9v DC fed into the set where it expects composite signal... ouch).

Speaking of which, does anybody have a picture of the official scart cables that came with the console back in 1995-7? I can only find images of repros. As far as I know, this cable was never sold separately and doesn't have its own box and such.

When I'm home I'll crack open one of my unused consoles and take a look.

They are not branded and not fully pinned or wired. Maybe made right at the last moment and on the cheap. It was good of Sega to ship the RGB scart cable with the Saturn. Here is mine, all you can do is compare with your own. Not really a common scart end so if you have one of these then chances are you have the lead that shipped with the machine. Thing of interest is the screw it self and the hole of the plastic on the scrat end. Forget the white thing hanging off as this is my self done audio out! Another snap looking at the pins.

Ha! I just bought one of those yesterday. It's double choked so I imagine it'll have no noise/interference.

Might be a pin that connects to the Saturn or the Saturn it's self where the lead connects is getting warn out. If it was switching between the two then it might of been a bad contact?
