I just got an MK1 off ebay. It was pretty dirty and the box was pretty smelly like the mukker I bought it off kept it in a shed for winter. I spent half and hour with some kitchen towels and water and got all all clean (on the outside anyway... not inside yet). Problem is it got half way through Street Fighter AII then just went off. Now it wont boot past the logo screen. Additionally, it seems to want to know the date and time every boot. Hmmm!?! Im thinkin it cant believe its age and just wants to rest now. This cannot be though. Can anyone tell me what sort of thing causes this? Im gonna clean it again, inside and out. If this works Ill post right back. Maybe this sort of thing sounds familiar though?

The date and time could be the Battery.
Same battery as Dreamcast memory cards.
If changing the battery doesn't help it, the clock might be fried.

date and time problem is the battery for sure, shouldn't affect the booting though.

Well I just bought some batteries. Hopefully this will be enough. The cleanup didn't do anything. IEven though I didnt revoce all the components. I just got the hoover as close as I could. Definitely got some dust out. It was actually not as bad as I thought anyway. There is another thing though. The screen shimmers, with horizontal lines in a jolty fall. This could be a read problem. Arrgh

Its allright though. Ill just sell it for parts if the battery doesnt fix it. Ive got a totally mint one doesnt look like its even been in use at all. The games I got with it are the best Ive found on the eBay to date. Obviously the seller just got it and put it in a good cool dry storage spot, and just got it out rescently. Wot a deal. I think Im gonna play sum Sega Rallly now ;D

Arrgh How much does it shimmer exactly? Small amounts of shimmering on analog TV signals is normal.

I mean it fully wobbles. The lines appear like white bands of static fuzz, and distort the picture like waves. There are maybe 20 bands on the screen at any one time, with maybe 1cm spaces. It is also an HDTV, 32inch, and the RGB Scart is in. My minty one works a treat.

I think you've answered your own question in a way your wonky saturn needs repaired!

Well Ive only got one TV. And the aerial connecter doesnt effect it any different than the RGB Scart. I dont think its these. It is defintely to do with the load process. When it works it is perfect as can be. And the lines coincide with the zippy zappy noises, as well as the failure to load. There is also another thing. It will load games straight away if I just open the lid, and dont turn it off. Im not sure if this is a good thing though. I never like doin dat wid a CD console. I suppose its not as bad as if you just wrench out a cartridge with the computer on.

I experienced this problem today with my MK1!
I unplugged it and left it alone for a while, cleaned the laser and rapped on the case with my fist a little (Not HARD, just firmly) and it seemed to go away.
This would indicate that the problem could possibly be caused by a loose connection or dirt inside the machine, I am reluctant to open mines to look further as when I modded mines I mounted the switch on the top half of the case, making taking the top half off the case off a bit of a fiddle for me.
I think I am going to invest in a new Saturn, and some generic CD-rom laser-eyes, and see if transplanting ones cures the problem should it occur again.

Ok update:
the Saturn I have that was "Fritzing" is doing it whenever I use the console for an hour or so now - tapping the power button on and off before switching on seems to make the problem go away.
This suggests it might actually be related to capacitors?
Electrolytic caps don't generally last past 25 Years, and usually start wearing at 10.
I think in the foreseeable future, many more Saturns will be doing this.
