I suck at shmups so I went in activating the easy mode cheat right off the bat. Still almost lost all my credits too.
Beautiful game with great music. Gameplay wasn't too obnoxious even though I hate shmups generally.
I can see myself revisiting it in the future. On easy.

Darius games are indeed quite hard. Everything comes to getting the good power upgrade, and surviving long and intense boss fights. A lot of memorization is needed ; but not as much as in R-Type games, thankfully. Iirc, I got the 1CC in Gaiden in about 2 weeks of almost exclusive play.
Edit : Oh Adam, no ! Easy mode is bad, dont do it more than once or twice to discover what the game has to offer, then switch to normal.

Sengoku Blade isn't that hard on the easiest setting. It's actually one of the reasons why I like it so much because it's a game that's suitable for all skill levels.

The difficulty isn't insane like some other shumps which makes it an easy to choice to revisit constantly. Game Paradise is another shump I constantly revisit you may like that one as well as the difficulty level is very similar. But I'm currently having a love affair with Tiger 2 at the moment as well as Guardian Force. Such unique shumps. I'm also giving the sports titiles some TLC, so NBA Action 98' as well as NHL All Star Hockey 98' have been getting a full work over. Virtua Cop 2 playing in VC1 mode is also another favorite of mine to play. Since I don't own a crt anymore. VC1 mode, auto reload and a mouse pad evenes out the difficulty.

Darius Gaiden is a rad game. Im terrible at SHMUPS so i have to play with infinite credits but I really like the art style in that game. Don't be too hard on yourself, Darius Gaiden is incredibly hard, even by shmup standards. Bullet hell style Cave games are a cakewalk by comparison. I can get through most of Guwange on 1 credit, usually 2nd to last or last stage before I need to continue. I'll be credit feeding Darius Gaiden by the 3rd stage. Haha thanks man, but I am pretty bad at all shmups. I like them, but I gotta play them alot more to get better. I just recently realized it can be better to focus on dodging compared to staring at the enemy or boss on screen. However, I play shmups just for fun so I don't mind credit feeding them. Some of the enemies and levels can be so interesting so just seeing what they have to offer is worth. Today I tried some more wipeout. At the higher speeds the chunkiest of the controls starts to show a bit more, but I think with some practice I can get better. Since I got annoyed with Wipeout though I decided to play one of my favourite Saturn games, Hang on GP. Finished a few races of GP mode and will likely play some more tonight.

Started playing Saturn again this week for the first time in a while. Playing Shining Force 3 for the 1st time. I'm not an RPG fan so I hadn't played it even though I've had it about 4 years. I must say i think it's great, I thought it would be full of random turn based battles (mine main hate when it comes to RPGs) but I've been pleasantly surprised

After 16 years I finally convinced my wife to play Saturn with me. Namely Baku Baku after I caught her playing Candy Crush and convinced her a Vs match would be much better. And it was.
That music haunts your dreams though.

I knew when I created this legendary thread a few years ago that I was on to something lol segasaturngroup.proboards.com/thread/8447/baku-animal-appeal-women

She enjoyed it, we played a few best of fives. The higher speed settings are actually an advantage once you get your eye in.

Funny, I also remember being able to get my wife to play Baku Baku. We had fun for about the 30 minutes she gave me this day. I could never convince to try to coop through Radiant Silvergun though, how comes ?

I know it's a bit normie-tier for a Saturn gamer, but I'm playing Sonic Jam (NTSC-J)! Managed to absolutely cheese Sonic 2 & Knuckles so far by getting all 7 emeralds within 3 acts - usually this game is the one I struggle with most when it comes to special stages.

Making it old school - Space Invaders!
The Saturn got a great port of this game. It feels highly accurate but it isn't a straight emulation. SI is a TATE game but this version fills the screen yet doesn't look stretched to fill 4:3. It plays beautifully and has all the quirks/bugs of the original. I was practicing the strategy that is centred around letting invaders reach the last row where they can't shoot you - but one miss and the game is over if they get past you and drop onto the ground.
Also playing some Outrun, Darius Gaiden and Tempest 2000.

Top shooter tips.. focus on the patterns of the bullets, stay mid screen so you can manoeuvre your ship to the bottom of the screen to dodge bullets effectively, this gives more time to track your ship away from the bullet. there's always space with no bullets. Be where the bullets aren't....

yeah - if you watch replays of expert shmup players you will see they actually don't move the ship around that much. When they do it's small adjustments - large swooping moves usually end in a life loss. It's hard not to do that but if you practice and keep the concentration up huge improvements are possible. And the skill is applicable across all shmups too.
