Hello all,
I'm wanting to use my cart slot for Direct save 8mb cart i'm working on... but still play imports.
I presume a mod chip will allow this? If so.. Were to buy them from?? I'm in Aus... I have not found a mod chip suppler that has anything Saturn. Only just have game cube!
Any help would be great.
D.

Email Rob at Console Goods about obtaining a mod chip, he had to take them off his site but still had stock last time I enquired. www.consolegoods.co.uk/

Modchips don't let you play imports though, only region free BIOS or switchless region free does that.

I'm surprised there isn't a sticky FAQ to this effect for most questions asked here. As I guess for most people who are Saturn vets it's common knowledge but to muppets like me it's new info.

OR maybe it was people changing the region code in the ISO and then burning a copy? I would do a regon free bios.. But i don't think the eprom programmer i has supports the chip i need for it. I think i'll have to buy it through buyicnow.. and get them to burn the file in for me. D.

The Saturn Region Patcher supports a wide variety of games and image formats, so I still think it'd be worth it to get a mod chip.

Rather an inelegant solution though, if you're going to open it up might as well do a proper mod. We used to fit the switchless region frees all the time but sadly I can't take any orders for a month or two.

My eprom programmer doesn't support the right chip.. so can't program them myself. I found one universal V3 mod chip.. but it was $40 US + Postage.... I can buy a complete Saturn here for less than $100 US... I guess its easy enought to do universal BIOS and mod chip at same time... This only leaves SAVE SRAM.... I can expand that to 1Mbit.. OR just use the 8MB Direct Save cart i'm building instead... Would like to do a "8 page" 2mbit onboard expansion one day... D.

Best method to get imports done is region free bios in my opinion. Install it once, and game region is never a problem after that.

I've always preferred switchless region free, since region free BIOS can't do 50/60hz switching anyway. If you don't mind adding a switch to your console or you only want to play 60hz games on a NTSC console then region free BIOS is a good option.

It's dirt simple to install a 50/60 switch and I'd always prefer to be external so you can switch PAL titles to 60hz too.
Besides it's not like there are so many reasons to keep a Saturn in 50hz to begin with. There are a small handful of good, optimized titles, but if you are into importing (which is what you'd need the region free bios for), you can grab all those optimized games much cheaper, and not a lot (if any) of them are text heavy either.

You can switch PAL titles to 60hz with the switchless mod too. It's just nice to have an all in one solution that doesn't spoil the aesthetics of the console I think.

50/60hz switch doesn't spoil the aesthetics either, you can hide it nicely next to the battery slot (and yes, MPEG cards still fit if you use a simple switch).

Meh, for my money switchless region is more elegant, particularly on consoles that don't have socketed EEPROMS, going through all that hassle for something that's not feature complete seems silly to me.
