These boards are lacking some excitement as of late so I've decided to construct a little game. I'm gonna pit two Saturn games of similar style against each other each week and see which one comes out on top. I may even do more, it all depends on how well this one does.So here we have Dead or Alive and Last Bronx. All you have to do is tick the box of the game that personally gives you the most enjoyment and explain your reasons why in the comments below. Ticking both is not an option so pick wisely. So which one will it be: Dead or Alive or Last Bronx? DEAD OR ALIVELAST BRONX

Personally, Last Bronx. There are better hand-to-hand fighters on the Saturn than DoA, but not better weapon fighters.

sych please keep doing these. Gets the conversation going. Just like your Darius vs. Galactic poll, this one is also close. But I also will vote for Last Bronx and agree with Whitefalcon. Again im not a fighter guy but I love Last Bronx. Secretly might be my favorite on the system. I love the 3D backgrounds, the look of the fighters but mostly because of the weapon based combat.

Dead or Alive. Last Bronx felt barely finished. In my opinion I look at LB a different way. Just about all of the late arcade to Saturn conversions were rushed, incomplete or farmed out. But LB to me was the one that felt most like it was given attention. I do know that the original team and creator didn't want anyone else handling it which is probably why it didn't turn out like say HOTD. The only thing that I feel is unpolished is the rare glitching which I can get past. Dead or Alive is certainly a very good all around looking game too though.

Wouldn't it have made sense to put Dead Or Alive up against another similar title, such as Goiken Muyou: Anarchy In The Nippon or even Virtua Fighter 2? Similarly, I'd have opened a poll where you can vote between Last Bronx and Fighting Vipers.
Of the two available selections, I'd definitely give the edge to AM3's stellar effort, which introduced not only weapons, but the ability to use walls tactically. Team Ninja's game isn't bad, though I've always considered it too indebted to VF2.
Saying that, Goiken Muyou was supposedly developed by several former AM2 staff who originally proposed this to Sega as a follow-up to VF2 before going it alone, receiving assistance from a handful of key players in the Japanese arcade scene.
As for the glitching in Last Bronx, I seem to recall one of the Saturn conversion programmers claiming this mainly happened when there was too much on-screen or character models got too close to the camera, which caused polygonal flickering...

I loved Last Bronx back then, but when i picked it back up a couple of months ago (after years of 2D and 3D fighters) i must say... it's not very good. While it has that classic Saturn arcade feel, it's sluggish at the same time in several aspects (especially when it comes to jumping attacks...motions are meh...)

The only thing that I feel is unpolished is the rare glitching which I can get past. Dead or Alive is certainly a very good all around looking game too though. I completely agree. LB is a fantastic conversion of a great fighter with only very minor quibbels that only the most anally retentive person would criticise the game for. I loved LB when it was released, playing through it with each of the characters and unlocking everything the game had to offer. Along with Fighting Vipers, which LB inspired me to buy, this game taught me the benefits of blocking in a fighting game. Previously I had been completely about offensive moves to the extreme. LB taught me how to be more strategic and I will always remember it fondly for that. Each of the characters has loads of personality (like most SEGA fighters of the era). The anime cut scenes are awesome Saturn exclusives, the graphics are very impressive indeed, and the gameplay is familiar yet unique. The only thing I can critique the game for is its slower paced gameplay on account of the weapons. In comparison to something fluid like Soul Calibur, it feels a bit clunky, but was very impressive for the time. The powerful Kurosawa or agile Lisa (who also had the best stage music) were always my favourites back in the day, but these days I prefer more fluid fighters likers like Tommy. The last time I played LB multiplayer I got raped by an inexperienced player who kept spamming Zaimoku's deadly mallet attack. DOA is on par with VF2 as far as the conversion goes. High-res graphics at 60fps with very fast and fluid gameplay are lovely. There are some great characters too. There's little to fault here. I haven't played it as much as LB, not because it is a bad game but I picked it up when my interest in fighting games hadvwaned. Bet I would have played it to death if it had had a Western release back in the 90s. Unlike LB, DOA was much easier to pick up and play without having to invest a lot of time to master it. I prefer the more fluid gameplay of DOA but it didn't have the impact that LB had on me despite how impressive it is. It's a difficult choice. More topics like this, please.

Glad you are all enjoying my new threads. Don't worry Derek, I have more threads like these on the way. I'm going to give this one and the other thread a week before I post another 2, just so it catches on.
This is a very tough decision to make between LB and DOA. I've constantly been changing my mind. As a Fighting games traditionist I would have gone with Last Bronx as at least there is some sort of payoff once Arcade Mode is completed. But I have more versatility with the character selection in DOA so based on that DOA wins for me but its so close.

Similarly, I'd have opened a poll where you can vote between Last Bronx and Fighting Vipers I see your logic Anthaemia but I don't want to duel games that are too similar to each other. It takes the fun out of voting. So that also applies to earlier franchises against fresher franchises. So You won't see for e.g 'Blah, Blah 97' vs 'Blah, Blah 98' To me that's not interesting. I'm also considering a games popularity, both contenders should have almost equal levels of popularity as it makes the voting tighter. So something like Anarchy In Nippon vs DOA is too one sided. There will be certain games I'll be dueling that have little in common but share the 'holy grail' seel of approval by many Saturn gamers. Don't worry I know what I'll be putting VF2 up against but you'll have to wait till next week.

Can we have a three way Duke Vs Quake Vs Exhumed? That's actually good one Barry. I'll make an exception and post 3 way one in a bit. Nice one.

I played the first dead or alive back in the day and thought it was good like almost any 3d fighter. however I then got dead or alive 2 on the dreamcast and that one tore any 3d fighter a new one. now I don't think the first one is more than a 6/10 and last bronx is a little bit better. so I prefer last bronx with a small margin
