My TV packed up this morning, so I'm in the market for a new one in the very near future (probably the next 1-3 days). I've heard that some flat screens can have problems with older consoles (my Dreamcast doesn't work properly on my friend's TV, for example), and I was wondering:
1) Is this a particularly common problem? 2) Are there any models/brands to avoid?
Money's a little bit tight, so I won't be getting anything particularly fancy (although 720p HD would be nice). Thanks in advance.

Well I generally find shitty brand X TVs such as Hitachi work very well with pretty much everything.

Just buy a CRT. I know this won't help you.

The only way to connect a Dreamcast to an HDTV and have it look remotely acceptable is with VGA, end of. *facepalm* True story.

Some HDTV's won't support the Dreamcast at all, some HDTV's don't even have VGA. No HDTV's work properly with Saturn, Megadrive, SNES etc, though usually you'll get a picture. See retrogaming.hazard-city.de/ for more info on this. If you're on a tight budget I'd suggest the Lenkeng LKV360 Scart to HDMI Converter. You can get them for around £50 and they work very nicely with 240p material.

When buckoa says 'don't work properly' what he means is they have minor picture issues that nobody gives a shit about.

No I mean it deinterlaces an already progressive picture, amongst other things. LCD or Plasma makes no difference. If you don't give a shit that's fine but it's not exactly difficult to fix.

Just buy a CRT. I know this won't help you. You're right, it won't! But seriously, thanks everyone. I had this vision in my mind of a flickering picture unless you were really careful about which TV you chose, but it seems that such serious problems are quite rare. Picture quality isn't a particular concern right now, although I've now got an eye open for a Dreacast VGA. It sounds like it makes a very real difference.

Hardest thing choosing a set for gaming is finding one with low input lag. Remember input lag is not the same as response time.
The Dreamcast VGA makes a huge difference, the Lenkeng LKV360 makes a big difference. Both will improve input lag times along with picture quality without breaking the bank.

Input lag only becomes an issue when it becomes noticable or detremental to what you're playing.
I'm having neither issue on my plasma, and the picture quality could not be better, it's as clear as an emulator shot.

Beetleman, i highly recommend you look at viera plasma's, even if you go for a smaller screen size panasonic still offer plasmas in around the 37" range (mines a 50) picture quality is spot on, make sure you check for a VGA port some plasma's dont have them

My panasonic viera has no VGA, it came with a DVI to HDMI cable so obviously aimed at PCs with DVI instead.
My VGA-HDMI box was cheap enough though and the picture is great.
