This accessory was mentioned on another thread, so out of curiosity, I'm asking you all what exactly is this thing and how does it work? I've heard of it on a few previous occasions but never looked into it before.

to be honest dude, it will be overpriced and i doubt the need for its use will ever arise. Its use was to replace memory cards as well as saving data from the net in conjunction with the Saturn's Internet software. But only a few games support direct saving and reading to the FDD.
I mean you could back up any save data from you're Saturn's memory to the FDD for safe keeping, but you'd be better off buying memory carts instead of FDD's

It's really not worth bothering with except for collector/curiosity value, mine has never been out of it's box.

I also use mine regularly. I prefer it.
Keep your eyes open I won an auction and got one for $50 complete. It was a US seller too so the shipping was cheap.

Also if you can't get one with the proper power supply, a MegaDrive 2 power supply will work too as I hear.
And if you can't get one with the disc, I could help you acquire the software if you have a modchip. (I figure, if you own the hardware, it should be legal to have a backup of the software that goes with it, no?)

As for the usefulness of it, I use it fairly often though not everyday. I guess you would have to see how many memory cards would you need to hold all your saves? While the FDD can be pricey you have practically unlimited amount of memory since floppies are dirty cheap. Plus some games (though a limited amount) support it directly without a need to move saves from the dash. In the end I'm happy with my purchase if anything for the peace of mind as I won't have anymore problems with memory cards and my saves disappearing.

Sorry but, you trust floppy discs, one of the most unreliable storage mediums in the history of computing, over a memory cartridge?!

I'm considering buy one too but I have a few questions:
Can you copy your files from a memory card to a floppy disk?
What is inside the box? The reader itself, management program, a cable and the power supply, that's it?

My cart is an official one. In fact, when I had two, they both crapped out on me all the time on various Saturns.
So yes, I trust floppy drives. Because they don't delete all my save games if the wind blows on it a little. (Plus I can make backups to a whole box of floppy disks)
Saturn memory cartridges suck. My many lost hours of work on a Dezaemon 2 game is a testament to this. I've used my floppy drive for over a year now (same disks) and no problems!
Yes. And vice versa.

I think Yart, you've had terrible luck with memory carts and exceptionally good luck with floppies.
I have official carts with working saves over 10 years old!

Wow. Nice! Yea all my floppies from the 80s (which I used quite frequently) still all work perfectly. No bad sectors. Eh. To each their own I guess. Luck plays a role it seems.

My Saturns cart slot is always occupied by the 4MB RAM cart, meaning I am forced to use internal memory. Thus I use the floppy disk drive to make backups. It does the job fine for me I hate swapping carts on the Saturn since they are known to break easily. Akirashin the FDD box includes the following items: Floppy drive (with built in cable that connects to the Saturn) 1 Floppy disk Manual Power Adapter CD-ROM that you use for memory management You can copy data from and to the floppy disk from the backup memory cart or the internal memory of the Saturn. Hope that helps.

Hey Yuji. The box or manual (I forget which, I left them at home) shows a special floppy disk for the Saturn. I can't read Japanese, but did that originally come with the drive too? I can't imagine what it would be used for (besides a bonus free disk).
