Having looked everywhere on the internet, there doesn't appear to be a translation guide for Edward's chapter on Princess Crown so I assume there won't be one for Prosperina or Portus.
So I decided to move onto Iron Storm. I've been cautious about replaying this game because the first time I played it a couple of years back, I didn't really understand how the gameplay worked but after a few browses on gamefaqs guides I've been able to get into it. I'm playing the standard mode at the moment as its easier to get to grips with the game as a whole before I embark on the Campaign mode. So far so good.

Played a bit of the JPN version of Athlete Kings (i.e. Decathlete). It isn't as slick as the PAL version - there are occasional polygon glitches on the characters. Not sure if the PAL version is cleaner because of a fix or because of the lower frame rate.
PAL version has those borders though.

I have the PAL copy of Athlete Kings but always play it at 60hz to get rid off the boarders and 17.5% reduced speed. But I've often wondered if the clock also speeds up when the PAL version is forced into 60hz I've also wondered about the JPN version and whether it was identical to the PAL version. I know last year when we had our competition it seemed like everyone was throwing in the 25 metre mark for Shotput but in the 20 years I've had the game, Using the optimal character for Shotput time and time again, I was never been able to throw past the 24 metres range, despite also hitting full power and around or spot on the optimal angle. Until that competition, I actually thought the games limit for Shot put was in the 24 metre range until others were throwing Shot puts in the 25 metres plus mark. I did wonder if perhaps the JPN version and the PAL version had slight differences after that.

Really been meaning to give Iron Storm a proper play as well. It seems like a heavy game so Ill need to be in the mood for it. I am well aware of its reputation for being one of the best war sims ever by some. So I'm intrigued.

The JP version does seem to be a bit harder - it could be the different timing.I believe it has an unlockable Japanese male character too.

Some Tempest 2000 this evening. I've never played the Jaguar original but all I can say is that the Saturn port looks and sounds glorious. I believe there are those who prefer the soundtrack of the original but the Saturn port has a more consistent frame rate so I guess it's down to personal preferences. I reviewed it for this site some time ago but the game if anything has got better with age. I was sitting in a dark room in front of my CRT with this running and it was great. I'm playing the PAL version but it runs just fine on my JP console using the AR. The music doesn't actually change between playing at 50 or 60Hz but the game fills the screen and seems play more swiftly but not too fast the way PAL optimised can sometimes. www.segasaturn.co.uk/games/pal/T/tempest2000/

Is that JPN character an all rounder or does he have a specialty?

He is dead easy to unlock - once you record 8,000pts or higher in Decathlon mode you just hold down X when starting a new game.
His stats display "?" against his speciality. Have played a couple of Decathlons with him and he seems to be an all rounder - but I'm a bit rusty so it's hard to tell. Part of me hopes he isn't an over powered character that results in people making a nonsense of world records. Going by youtube content that doesn't appear to be the case as you don't see many instances of his use and I don't think knowledge of this is rare.

Played some Darius Gaiden "testing" my arcade stick. I activated the auto fire feature (see gamefaqs). I'm not sure if this is a cheat or not as this was apparently a dip switch setting on the arcade PCB. Shmup.com also accepts high scores with it activated. You also see it being used in the game's demo sequences.
Anyhow - it makes the game far more manageable and enjoyable. I like old school gaming but manual rapid fire is something I don't think adds any value. Well that's my excuse! I got further on one credit than I have ever done (zone K) with it and I can see me spending more time with this game from now on.

With the boom of shmups on smartphones, autofire seems the norm these days so I as well am very interested to try this.

Yeah - just check it out on gamefaqs. There are a few of other features available that accessible in a similar way - a super easy and super hard mode + extra credits.

Played Decathlon mode with the unlockable JPN character last night.
Just 11,900 pts - so I reckon he is a pretty good all rounder.
Got 9.23 on 100m, 12.18 hurdles, 6.20 pole vault and 2.40 high jump but screwed up the discus - so my newly oiled joystick didn't help.
Not the strongest thrower though - got a full strength shot putt with decent angle but didn't worry my world record.

Might have to get the JPN version of Athlete Kings if I come across it cheaply just to try the new character.

Played around with some Action Replay Codes for ThunderForce V and I finally got the game to work, it was just a question of changing one letter. Tonight is more about stocking up on Action Replay codes for some of the later titles I never had time to check.
