finally finished Shining Force 3 Scenario 2 , going on to Scenario 3. Overall I probably liked it more than Scn1 as the story is getting very interesting and the game is also visually more varied. Is the game living up to it's high acclaim? I've always been cautiously interested in the idea of sitting down and playing through the entire trilogy but it's a pretty large commitment and I don't think I'd want to invest a significant amount of time unless the ends justified the means. With some of the more expensive RPG's I often wonder if they get inflated praise due to people paying extravagant prices and feeling the need to justify their purchase -- this is probably the main reason I am skeptical. Id say its a great game , the story can get a bit bogged down with politics but it generally does a good job of keeping you interested , the gameplay is addictive and in terms of visuals and sound its up there (Id say Panzer Saga and Grandia look better, but thats about it for RPGs). now whether part 1 is worth the prices it commands (at least for the US and PAL versions) is a different matter. I personally can't justify paying £180 or so for just about any game . I managed to get the PAL version a number of months ago for about £65 (same price I paid for Saga about 8 years ago) at which point I could justify it. what I would say is that if you do want to play the game (in English or otherwise with a script) , Scenario 1 kind of ends on a cliffhanger (the English version changed the ending abit to mask that, but its kind of obvious given the amount of unfinished plot points), so if you do end up going for it, go for the trilogy. You could get the Japanese version of Scn1 , and if you like that, get the other ones. maybe not a decisive answer, but its the best I could put it.

darkman01: Thank you for the lengthy and thoughtful response, I think I will probably hold off from purchasing the game based on your response. It's certainly a game that interests me and there will eventually come a time in which it'll feel appropriate to playthrough the trilogy but I think my present focus should be on games that I will enjoy with certitude.

I've just started playing Legend of Oasis (I refuse to call it SoT2. It's a silly name). It's really good. Done the first three dungeons, and it's as good as any zelda game. Although I was stuck in the Earth Temple for ages going around in circles. Turns out I just missed an obvious pit to fall through...
I also finished Duke 3D yesterday, which was great. I do miss episode 4 though, but oh well.

Having a bit of a pc engine day....
Gekisha boy AKA Polaroid Pete - what an ace game, super addictive.
Parasol stars - story of rainbow 🌈 island - arcade as anything, never was released in arcades though, dead good.
Coryoon - one of my favourite shooters on the system, bold and colourful, massive sprites. Amazing!
Magical chase - another boss shooter, kinda like cotton, weirder somehow!
PC denjin - bonk gets his own shooter, cyberpunk madness, super fun.
Concentrating on these for a few days.

Or most likely because the first one here was called Beyond Oasis. As for Duke 3D, I too love Episode 4, but never held it against the Saturn port. Its just such a fun playable port that I like that we even got it at all.

Finished Oasis. It was really good, although the final dungeon got really irritating after a while. I think that it could have been improved by gaining an ability to switch between the spirits at will. You need to swith spirits for different things so much in that last dungeon that it becomes a pain.
It was a good game though. I liked the dungeon in the sky best, although those ghost knights that constantly regenerate are the worst enemies in the game....
I'd recommend it for any Zelda fans.

Playing some Sega Rally today. I've been messing about with different cables and just to see the difference I played PAL Sega Rally on my CRT using a composite cable. For certain 3D games I wonder if composite actually helps as it smooths the image out. Athlete Kings benefits from RGB SCART as it has cleaner lines but I'm not sure Sega Rally does.

playing Silhouette Mirage, great game though Ive never figured out why it deletes your save when you get a game over, or at least it does with me.

Been sorting out my collection trying to trim it down so been plaing some neglected games this week deciding what to keep or sell.
Playing alot of Golden Axe: The Duel and Valora Valley Golf. Like Virtua Fighter 2, Fighters MegaMix and Last Bronk, Golden Axe: The duel is another PAL optimised game that benefits from being on 60hz, despite the bottom half of the screen chopped the speed levels are more tolerable than how it was intended. Did a beat of Valora Valley, absolute blast hoot! Spent the most time I've ever spent on a golf game and loving it.
Other than those two, more Winning Post and Iron Storm and a bit of Amok.

Been playing alot of Story of Thor 2 recently. Was inspired to revisit it after reading SpanishAdam's passionate post on the game. Re-playing it I was reminded of what a truly great and underrated game it is. Definitley a Saturn gem. I'm halfway through the game at the moment. Just picked up Brass the Spirit of Sound who is such an awesome companion. Other than that a bit of Kingdom Granprix. Jury is still out on whether I like this shump or not. I also finally got my hands on JPN Street Racer extra & Sega Touring Cars, both games I never gave the time of day back in the day but I appreciate them now. With Touring Car was more to do with the fact I never owned the 3D pad when I bought the game. Street Racers another great overlooked game. Just realised I had been doing myself a dis-service by using Sumo all the time. Ralph is clearly where it's at. His lack of grip and handling used to scare me back in the day but once you know the courses he's clearly the best driver.

Is it an easy game to play with no grasp of Japanese? I take it that would be the case as it's a platformer but where does it rate for you in great Saturn platformers?

Kingdom grandrix is best played as a normal shooter, without the racing element. Definitely the racing aspect that holds it back. There's a cheat here to open the normal mode www.gamefaqs.com/saturn/574361-shippuu-mahou-daisakusen-kingdom-grandprix/cheats

Will try that cheat tonight as I do find the racing elements extremley irritating. EDIT: I've tried the the cheat and the game is 10xs better. You've turned my frown upside dowm. Such a great shump. This will now be my go-to mode. The racing element definitely does a dis-service to the game. Its good to have as an additional mode of play but should never have been the USP.

I quite enjoyed SoT2 as well. The gameplay is great but the story and some puzzle solutions are really obtuse. I got stuck at that pit you're supposed to fall through too. I really need to get back and finish this game.

Been playing Tomb Raider and Rayman recently, wanting to finish both of them. Tomb Raider is one that I've only gotten into recently, Rayman is a childhood favourite but one that I never beat without cheats, so I'm attempting to beat that legitimately for the first time. Honestly, I don't think I can overstate how ludicrously hard Rayman is. I'm pretty confident in my platforming skills too, I'm not the best but have beaten plenty of difficult games in the genre like the Mega Man games, Ghouls n Ghosts, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Bug and Bug Too, Dynamite Headdy, Super Meat Boy and so on, yet I can honestly say I struggle with Rayman much more than any of those games. The mix of the limited continues with level design that seems deliberately designed to catch you off guard and instantly kill you until you figure out the exact timing and pattern the game wants you to follow through trial and error honestly makes it hard to recommend or even consider a particularly good game by the time you reach Picture City, but I still enjoy it, probably mostly due to nostalgia. I'm not even sure I get why Rayman was made so hard. The limited continues make me think that it was done to elongate the game as lots of old 8-bit platformers do, but Rayman is already a decently lengthy game without accounting for the constant reloading of old saves in an attempt to complete levels with less lives wasted, especially given that getting all the cages is required. Either way I'm currently at 76% completion with 38 lives and all five continues remaining. The next level I need to beat is Space Mama's Crater which I had been dreading ever since I picked the game up again and was the primary reason I wanted to save as many lives as possible. Tomb Raider I'm currently at level 10, City of Khamoon. I've got the controls nailed now and am enjoying it more and more, though the camera is still a pain. The learning curve for Tomb Raider is steep due to the outdated controls and how little direction you're given on how to approach combat, but it's been a pretty smooth difficulty curve once I properly got the hang of it, and in the NTSC-J version of the game I'm playing at least it's had just the right amount of save points and medkits to be challenging and consistently tense, but not infuriating. EDIT: Just beat Space Mama's Crater in Rayman. It's REALLY hard, drained all of my lives on my first attempt, but like all of Rayman it's all about memorization and recognizing patterns, and once you've got that down muscle memory can carry you through the stuff you've already beaten. On my second attempt I did it with 32 lives remaining, so I'm feeling a lot more confident that this will be a successful run now. EDIT again: Rayman has been completed!
