For those unfamiliar with this game, rules are simple: choose one and state your reason as to which one you prefer. One thing I should stipulate is this is for the Sega Saturn version and not any other version.

Rayman. Its just classic, and perfect timing since legends just released.

I'm not fond of either tbh. I did prefer the visuals to Astal though. For me, they're both much too slow. I wish I hadn't sold Astal now. Now I wanna play it again.

Never played Astal, but from the video's I saw, I wasn't that fussed by what I saw. Didn't look as nice as Rayman tbh.
With a complete and unfair bias for Rayman > a game I have never actually played for myself, which I couldn't give an opinion on...
I vote Rayman!

No competition.
Both are good games, but Rayman is the better of the two. The gameplay is more varied and refined, the visuals are just gorgeous and it has a brilliant soundtrack. Plus it's hard as nails so you won't be completing it any time soon. And it possess a wonderful charm. I wish I hadn't forgotten to nominate it in the Top 20.
Astal on the other hand, has some nice visuals, and has a fantastic soundtrack, but the gameplay, although interesting, is overly simple. The only thing it has over Rayman, in my opinion, is a better story. Some of the bosses are awesome.

WHAT?!? No love for Astal at all? I get that it didn't get a PAL release but it was/is still a good game. Not even a single vote? Surely more than a small handful of people on here have played this game. There is no excuse anyway as we have plenty of ways to play imports and you can get JP Astal for (relatively) cheap. I would have thought this was going to be a harder decision for people than "Rayman - easy". :\

I haven't played either game to death, but I'd say Astal made a more positive impression on me.
After playing Rayman enough to unlock and beat every stage in the first world/area/whatever and collect every item within it, I didn't really want to play anymore. It looks great, and the mechanics are solid, but it seems a bit more tedious than fun to me. For one thing, I fucking hate bottomless pits in platformers; they're a cheap and lazy crutch for game design, and they're everywhere in this game. Even the very first stage has them. Give me a break.
Astal, on the other hand, actually has me wanting to go back and play it again. It's far more simplistic, but it looks awesome and doesn't make me want to kill myself that much. Maybe if I play it enough my opinion will turn, but for now, it gets the edge.

Give me a break. Totally agree with the pit issue.. its such a lazy game mechanic imho.. And Rayman has to be one of the most uninspiring generic platformer hero of all time? Even when he was introduced you knew this was a porrmans unwanted choice? I think Astal has more of a soul.. espec the well painted sprites and backgrounds which is in SNK standard imho they are just visualy stunning.

Rayman is a much more fun game if you turn the infinite lives cheat on using an Action Replay. It's still challenging to play even with it on, without it you just lose interest having to repeat the same levels over and over.

I remember Rayman being so DAMN SLOW in terms of actual "speed at which you move and things happen" that made me lose the will to play after a couple of days. I'd rather play the Master System Sonics any time.

I hesitate to place a vote just yet, because I feel like I need to give Rayman a real serious go at beating the game, but for the moment I'm very much leaning towards Astal. Overly brief and linear as it is, Astal is more fun and less trying to one's patience. And I love the look of the game; I still remember how impressed my brother and I were by the clips on the Bootleg Sampler. Big critters and colorful shattering crystals... love it. The characters and story are very charming too. For one thing, I fucking hate bottomless pits in platformers; they're a cheap and lazy crutch for game design, and they're everywhere in this game. Even the very first stage has them. Give me a break. Maybe. Shame nearly EVERY single platformer EVER made has them... Mr. Bones doesn't have bottomless pits. Neither does Bonk's Adventure. (Perhaps not coincidentally, both are among my all-time favorite platformers.)

Astal, of course. Everything in this game is amazing! Since graphics to soundtrack and beyond. I can say these is the best game from Saturn. Or my favorite, at least.
