THIS IS VERSION 2 OF MATT BLAH'S ORIGINAL THREAD & POLL...
However, we had a slight discrepancy over ALL of the Parodius titles being bundled into one voting/poll option. The forum doesn't (seemingly) offer the ability to make edits to the poll thereafter, thus the original thread has been locked and this thread is in replacement.
All posts have been transferred over, but unfortunately, voting options cannot. Therefore, if you voted in the original thread, we (Matt & I) would be very grateful if you could reiterate those votes in this updated/revised poll. Also, those who voted 'Parodius' as one option in their last votes will no doubt need to revise their top 5 decision anyway.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the omissions of Planet Joker or Terra Cresta 3D. But, to be quite frank, we felt including Skull Fang was already pushing the boundaries.
Cheers...

Voted again, as per the previous votes having been lost.
I almost feel bad bout leaving Galactic Attack, Layer Section II, Darius Gaiden and Thunder Force Gold Pack 2 off of it again. Guardian Force is a nifty little shooter also. I switched the default controls around and I started enjoying it way more (I control the turret with the shoulder buttons now). I've also enjoyed my time playing the 'pachis, the Strikers...
One last thought: Twin Cobra II (can't spell the Japanese title for the life of me) isn't as bad as people make it out to be, not by a long shot. I was initially put off but somehow started enjoying it more after a few tries.
EDIT: My only regret as far as Saturn shooters are concerned, is that we never saw Gradius Gaiden on the platform. I'm not into modding PS1s and PS2s as it seems a fair bit complicated, therefore my only means of playing the game is on the PSP, and portable consoles aren't exactly built to support shooters.

Haha, yep, I felt that and Macross were as low as I really needed to go. Hopefully no one considers Tukai! Slot Shooting as one of their favourite shmups either Thanks for the update, and putting them in alphabetical order looks much better, I was just being lazy.

To make it more interesting than just your number one game you can pick your top 5, this should level out the results and mean three or four games don't have every single vote. Hopefully it will make the results more interesting. If you only like three shmups on the system then just pick three, but it is a maximum of five. [reads over list] I've played one... Guess I was farther behind on my Saturn shmups than I thought!

Well. I'll confess. Until I played Gradius V on PS2 10 years ago *gulp!*, I'd never looked twice at Gradius before that. I'd heard of it, but never cared. So, I played the back tracking game. Of all the ones I own, I only really, really like Gradius Gaiden & Gradius V. Gradius 1 - 4 I'm really not that enamoured with I'm afraid, although I will say, Gradius Rebirth on Wii VC was rather cool, as was Gradius Galaxies for GBA. If I had to put Gradius 1 thru 4 in order, it would probably be: 2, 1, 3 then 4...

Took DoDonPachi out of mine and added in Game Tengoku. DDP is a great game but I just don't get on with it for some reason. Game Tengoku is just more fun and has caravan modes too.
Re the Gradius games - as this is a pioneering series they are old school tough and I can see why they aren't as enjoyable nowadays. Gradius V is brilliant but not exactly a walkover either - in fact it is brutal. But the fact that options can be picked up oafter a life loss gives you a sporting chance.
If you want to play Gradius Gaiden on a non-JPN PS1 then you can use the Breaker Pro - a boot disc that works fine on my unmodded PAL console. It comes with a little widget for defeating the drive open switch that can be installed with no skills, tools, or console modification. There are different widgets for all the different models.
You just boot the PS1 up with the Breaker Pro disc and follow instructions - you can even force PAL games to run at 60Hz with it (a lot work OK as not many got optimisation - though more than you would think did get some work). The Breaker Pro software stops the disc allowing you to safely swap in your import game.

I like the Gradius games a lot. They were my first exposure to the shooter genre as a little kid. I got the Deluxe Pack coming in the mail. I'm really looking forward to it.
I have no business voting. Of all the choices, I've only played Galactic Attack. What's so bad about Skull Fang? It looks cool judging by videos.

You have to buy the right version of the disc for your region - but that's all. I had to buy the PAL version of the disc for example. My PS1 is the old phat grey one and it works fine. I thought the same thing and bought it despite NGN telling me I was making a mistake. It really is as bad as he'll tell you. It just plays badly, it looks pretty ugly and there is something wrong about it. NGN will no doubt explain it better than I can.
