lordmaximus: I dislike the word "hoarding" when it comes to serious game collectors. I'm sure that, for some, buying a lot of things can be a life-disrupting problem, but responsible adults aren't going to let it get too out of hand. Also, hoarding implies to me, that we're buying games to keep them away from other people, and I don't think that's true in most cases. Some people buy up fifty copies of one uncommon game and hold them until the price skyrockets, and then they sell them off. That's hoarding. Collecting normally implies building up or completing a set of something, but buying each, individual item just once. Additionally, even if they have too many games to play themselves, I think collectors get a similar joy, from just hunting for and finding games, as well as owning them. One thing you can be sure of, is that a collector is going to keep those games in good condition, vs. a more casual gamer, that might break the cases or throw them out. And a store like GameStop, can be trusted to scrap a lot of games as well.

If they had the money, they'd do it pretty quickly. What happens when this is all done? Do they go on to collecting something else? Or are they truly content? I just find it hard to believe there is ever an "end" game, no pun intended.

Well yes, some will stop collecting. I think the word "collector" applies to too many people, to say that all of them won't stop at one point or another. For the ones that do continue to collect, I say, let 'em have as much as they can hold. Eventually, they're gonna kick the bucket, and that stuff will be passed on to family members, and/or sold, so that they can be enjoyed again.

I know the dude who posted that. His name is Jordan and he's in the Saturn facebook group I'm in. He seems like a nice enough chap but he's havin a laugh at $15K. Although to be fair, that would probably be worth it if it came in the display and the convenience of having all of the games in one spot. AND for it to be reasonable at that price, it would need to have the PAL exclusives as well. I do prefer the US cases but I'm weird like that.
In response to the question, yes I would. Hell, I'm only 23 games away from a full US and PAL collection (one game from either, not one game from each) myself. I play all of the games on the Saturn in both PAL and US regions for my youtube channel. So to say they'd never get played is not true. Although if they're in my shit pile, who is going to play them? I know it's a logical fallacy to say that if I didn't like them, then no one will. But for the shit ones I do own and wouldn't be too upset to sell, is the money I'd get for them, really worth selling? Plus, how many people do you REALLY see playing Hardcore 4x4 or Trash It when you have better games that are as cheap if not cheaper? It seems ridiculous to say someone shouldn't own all of these crap games if it makes them happy to own them and not play them than it is to give them to someone else who isn't going to play them, either. Plus, I have played games on the system which I liked that a lot of people don't like DragonHeart and the Crow. And in some cases, I am a lot lenient than most. Although, there a few games I didn't like that I know some others might like Crimewave and Crusader No Remorse.

I've spoken to you a few times on Twitter actually. 23 games off the entire pal collection? Impressive! Pretty curious - what's the 23 games you need to complete it?

Oh. haha, hey Dan! Didn't notice you were the same person! Good to know, though. That's not necessarily the PAL collection. That includes US exclusives as well. As you can imagine, the ones I need are (mostly) the expensive ones: 3D Lemmings Albert Odyssey - Legend of Eldean Darius II Dark Legend Deep Fear Dragon Ball Z The Legend Exhumed / Power Slave Frankenstein - Through the Eyes of the Monster Jewels of the Oracle Keio Flying Squadron 2 Magic Knight Rayearth Mortal Kombat Trilogy NHL 98 Panzer Dragoon Saga Pinball Graffiti Riven The Sequel to Myst Sea Bass Fishing Shining Force III Swagman Torico Virtual Golf Winning Post

I could only offer you Exhumed, but you'd have to kill me and exhume me first before you can get your sweaty mitts on it.
Actually, the PAL version of Exhumed is only about £12 on Ebay, so pretty reasonable.
Games like Panzer Dragoon Saga are absurdly expensive. I can see one on Ebay now for £200. Sega should just do the right thing and release it on PSN and Xbox Live for under a tenner.

Not far to go! I actually just recently picked up copies of both Deep Fear and DragonBallZ. Deep Fear set me back $220aud but I've wanted it for so so long. Absolutely love The original Resident Evil and seeing Resident Evil 2 was unfortunately cancelled for the saturn this is as close as I will come to something similar on the Saturn! Just came yesterday actually, looking forwarded to having a game!

I'm in a generous mood I'll even throw in an unboxed copy of 4X4.

Been after Deep Fear for a long long time. Absolutely impossible to find it here in Australia. Only way I was going to get a PAL copy was EbayUK. They normally go for around $300aud. So I was pretty happy to pick it up for $220. I'll post some pics of it in software hauls later.

Since completing my PAL Saturn set twice over, I'm very content with it and I've never dipped heavily into collecting for any other system. Although some of my selections for other systems are large, I like to think that I only purchase games that I like and I don't randomly buy up shovel-ware unless it happens to come with a bundle of stuff I've purchased.
My original Xbox collection is a good example, I picked up The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay last week and it's literally the last Xbox game I intend to buy, ever. I've got 38 games for the system and that's everything on that console I want to own. I generally make little lists for each console of what games I want and I stick to them rigorously.
The only other system that I toyed with going for a complete set with was PAL 32X, as it only has 27 games, but I hit the 22 mark and really didn't want to spunk disgusting amounts of money away on the last few games I needed.
So why a complete set for Saturn? Well it's partially realising something that I aspired to do back in the day, I never got that close of course when the Saturn was current, I had around 50 PAL games by the time everything wrapped up in '98, but I always wanted to own every game on the system. I should also note that the price of Saturn games was MUCH lower when I hit my first complete PAL set, Deep Fear for example was a £30 game all day long and titles like Courier Crisis were bargain bin material.
And why did I do it twice? Well as completing a PAL set meant that I quite often picked up large bundles for the sake of one game, by the time I got my PAL set complete my box of duplicates already numbered over 180 games, so I thought why not! My 2nd PAL set has been gradually broken up lately though as I've let folks on here have things and used games for part-ex.etc.
If money was no object? Yes, I'd go bat shit insane and have complete collections for any console you would care to name, because if money were no object I'd have a gigantic house with more than enough space to keep it all, and there are much worse things you could spend your money on.

I'm not interested in the entire set of Saturn games - only games that interest me, and that number is becoming smaller and smaller every day. That said, I do feel there are certain games I have to have in my collection. Stuff like Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2, although great games, aren't games I play anymore, yet I feel obliged to have them in my collection because they are games that define the system for me. Same goes for a lot of 2D fighters.
I too worry that collecting can turn into hoarding. I often sell off games from my collection because I fear that I'm becoming a hoarder, only to rebuy them years later when the collecting bug infects me again.
