We all know that collecting for The Saturn can be expensive. There are games for every budget, IMO, but many of the good ones don't come cheap - not today.
Well... let's say for the sake of argument, that you could afford the entire library. Dropping $350.00 US, or 229 Pounds, or 320 Euros (et cetera) for a single game, would make no difference to your finances whatsoever. If that was the case, would you buy up every release on your wishlist? Maybe you'd even go for a full set. If money wasn't an issue, what would you do?
[P.S.: This is strictly hypothetical.I'm not asking about your financial situation. P.P.S.: Yes, we ALL know, that there are alternatives available. For the purposes of this discussion, that's somewhat irrelevant. It's a "will you" or "won't you" type of thing.

Money is only half of the issue, the other half is space lol If I had both the money to purchase them, and the space to store them, I certainly would go for a full library.
However, with my current space arrangement, I'd probably just snatch up the essentials

I definitly wouldn't go for a full library. There's nothing worse than having crap games in a collection.

I've done this over the last 18 months. Started off with 36 titles that I had from back in the day, I now have 235 stored in cheap but sturdy IKEA units. I've tracked the cost of everything since then and if I went back 18 months... ...hmmm, I don't know if I'd do it again.
Having gotten this far, I'm still working off the premise that I won't pay more than €100 for any one game. Last week I had the opportunity to pick up MK Trilogy (one of the remaining 6) for £77 but I didn't take it. I guess I'm happy NOT to have the complete set as I'd probably start on something else then.

I definitly wouldn't go for a full library. There's nothing worse than having crap games in a collection. Looking at what I have, I'd say there's about 30 games (including most of the football titles and all of the American sport titles - except NBA Jam) that I've never even tried. A waste of money? I think that's fair.

I definitly wouldn't go for a full library. There's nothing worse than having crap games in a collection. Typed out a massive response. Somehow, got lost... almost punched my fucking screen right through! Nothing worse than taking tim eover a response (something I seldom do on here nowadays vs my early days) just to inexpicably have it disappear and be unrecoverable. So, you're getting the harsh short version. Stuff I've said plenty of times before on the subject. Basically, don't be a fucking retard and fill your shelves with droves of shitty games you have no intention of playing, just to appease a fake audience (like this, or other gaming forums, for example) who could give two shits about what you do or do not own. It REALLY is a waste of your time and money, because nobody cares. Only you. And if you spend THOUSANDS on a "complete" or "full" collection, just for the sake of doing so, I guarantee, when you sit down and try half the games, you'll realise you've wasted your money and probably attempt some sort of bulk sale 18 - 24 months down the line. Only buy, own and play games for the right reasons: because you actually want to own and play them for your own enjoyment. A Well sculpted, concise and put together collection is MUCH MORE impressive than a shelf full of shitty PAL titles will ever be. Good luck paying retarded, out of your arse prices for "Courier Crisis", "Swagman" and "Frankenstein" just for the sake of doing so. LOL!

LOL! NeoGeoNinja -That was great... Believe it or not however, I don't 100% agree. In the case of the Saturn though, I definitely do. It's one of the most expensive consoles I can think of, to collect for, and the price of the rare games does get ludicrous. (The AES is probably worse, admittedly). I look at it this way: At this point, I see it as a cost-for-experience thing. Am I paying hundreds of dollars for one title, because the game experience is worth that much? Or am I paying that money because it's rare? In other words, would I rather pay retail price or under, for damn near the same experience, on the very same console or a different one? The answer right now is yes, and it would probably still be yes, millions of dollars later. With that being said, I am a collector. I see the coolness factor involved, in owning a full set of something. You're right about the fact, that it's an accomplishment no one cares about, save for yourself. Still, that doesn't actually turn me away from the idea, not completely... but I don't have any plans right now, to chase a full set of anything.

I have every Saturn game on my wish list. I was also going for a full US set at one time then came to my senses as I was having a hard time justifying the last 30 or so titles that I would never play. The bottom line is that I have no regrets about spending over $100 US for SS Stellar Assault, Radiant Silvergun, Street fighter Zero 3, or Dungeons and Dragons. Or titles like Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, Burning Rangers, and Battle Garegga. I do however regret the cheap pickups I made to fill out my collection like Alone in the Dark 2, Battle Arena Tohshinden Ura, and Rise 2: Resurrection. I had the good fortune to consider my collection complete around 3 years ago before prices went batshit crazy. If I was buying now I would not do it again. However, I would not sell what I have either.

Personally I can't see the point in owning the full catalogue of games for any console. I would rather collect my favourite titles from multiple systems rather than complete a single set.

I definitly wouldn't go for a full library. There's nothing worse than having crap games in a collection. For once I agree with you! I love having a collection of games, but I like them because they are a GOOD collection of games that I have or will play. Not games just bought to complete a "set". There are so many terrible Saturn (and same applies to all consoles) games out there, as well as the annual "updated" sports games. I am a Pro Evolution Soccer fan, but would never buy every update, as they are often so minor until a technology change. Its more remarkable on consoles like the PS2 or Wii, where there is so much painful shovelware, throwaway sports titles and licensed movie rubbish. How people can just continue to buy up that shit is beyond me. Just because you can get a Barbie game for a quid, doesn't make it worthwhile! So collect by all means, but have a GOOD collection, not just anything and everything because of an obsessive compulsive hoarding disorder!

If money was absolutely no issue, I would love to have the entire PAL collection. Crap games and all.

Seems pointless to me owning crap games you'll never play, and as per my post above it indicates a hoarding and collecting obsession rather than just having a healthy passion for quality games. If money was no object, sure I'd buy all the best Saturn, PS2, Wii, Dreamcast etc etc games, but I wouldn't waste space or money that could go elsewhere on endless iterations of FIFA or NHL Hockey titles (just the best one of each would suffice!!). Being content is underrated in society!

Thing is, Saturn is without question my favourite all time console, its the only console I really collect for. And having a complete set, would be great. I don't think its "pointless" to have the whole set. Back in the day when you use to collect basketball cards (or atleast I did) I would want them all, yes, even the crap players, why? Cuz I wanted the entire set. A collector is described as "1. a person who collects things of a specified type, professionally or as a hobby" It is a hobby of mine to collect Saturn games. Maybe im more of a collector and your someone who just likes certain games. Also a little bit different comparing the Saturn to a system like the PS2. The Saturn had about 7 basketball games in total I reackon. NBAJamTE, NBA Action, NBA Action 98, Slam N Jam, Live 97, Live98, Space Jam. Really not that many to collect. When you compare that to probably 40+ on the PS2.

Fair enough, but what happens when you get that full baseball set, or that full saturn set? What happens next? I just want to see inside the mind of a collector, as I truly believe they may struggle to find contentment, and move on to collecting something else. Its not a criticism, as I have seen how collecting turns into hoarding, and it is damaging. But you have a fair point on the Saturn library, its not too overwhelming. Still, many of those basketball games you mention are utter gash!

To be honest mate , I'm not sure how you've come to the conclusion hoarding and collecting are the same thing? Hoarders will keep anything and everything and often live in squalor when collectors are after a specific thing which they will usually take much pride in. Now, will I ever have the full Saturn collection? Nope. Cuz I tell you right now I'll never pay $300aud for Courier Crisis. Haha. But the question was - if money was no obstacle. If I won 100million dollar lottery would I want the entire pal collection. Yes, I would. I just think it would be awesome to own every game released on my favourite all time system.
