Resident Evil is an interesting one. Sure its better on PS1 overall but the Saturn version is so well done. Its was a port with care to fit on the Saturn. The extra modes are fun/nice. Most people probably find them to be nothing to write home about. So while I wouldn't put an X next to the Saturn version of RE as the better one, I still prefer it to the PS1.

If you purchase RE The Director's Cut on PS1, it contains the better looking PS1 graphics along with the additional content found in the Saturn version. Capcom consider it the final version of the game. At least until the REmake.

Hexen may have better framerate but it requires a genuine Saturn memory card to save, as the file is too big to fit in the system memory. The PSX version takes a whole memory card but that's a far less arduous requirement on that machine. So... both need a save cart, and the PSX version takes up an entire cart for 1 save, but the PSX version is somehow better for that?

PSX memory cards are $5 and you don't have to worry about a finicky save slot.

Capcom consider it the final version of the game. At least until the REmake. This is untrue in many ways... as far as I know The Battle Mode, the new costumes, the 2nd tyrant, and the new tick are ONLY in the Saturn version. There also 2 versions of PS1 Directors Cut in the US. The second was the Dual Shock version which is even more complete. The big addition of the PS1 version besides the arrange mode is the inclusion of the auto-aim feature that was in the original in Japan. The PS1 original in the West and the Saturn version both left out the auto aim. I personally like playing it without it. Funny fact about the PS1 Directors Cut. The whole point of the DC title was to include all of the extreme footage that was censored the first time. However due to a mistake by the programmers, DC shipped with the original censored FMV. Another tidbit. The US Saturn version and the PS1 Directors Cut share the same coverart. I personally much prefer this art to the awkward original. I like the hand drawn zombie portrait significantly more and am glad they used it.

I believe that only the dual shock version has the new soundtrack

What made the original RE game so hard was not so much not having an auto aim, but more the lack of ammo.

True pros can do it with only killing a handful of baddies. (But you're right, first time round it is tough until you realise you shouldn't be fighting a lot of the enemies.)

Even if you are not a pro you have lots of ammo left at the end of game, even without knifing everything. Normally you can dodge nearly every zombie at the first half of the game and use your ammo on the reapers or what they are called.

Yes it's actually most straightforward to dodge and run away from rather than fight the Hunters in lots of cases. That said, I do enjoy slaughtering them, all part of the fun of the game. I never even use the knife, just run round. takes a lot of practice of course. From memory you can complete the game killing only the snake (second time), the Plant (can be poisoned to help though) and the Tyrant. However are also some zombies that you would have to pass several times so it really is worth getting rid of them. And that Hunter outside the save room is a total prick if you don't dispose of it.

I saw a video recently by a youtuber who went through all the versions of the original game.
He said the Saturn and the first print Western PS1 version are the only ones lacking the Auto-aim. Capcom thought Americans wanted the greater challenge. This was a mind set used for alot of games across different genres. They always made it harder for this side of the pond.
Saturn RE is my favorite version to play still. I like the challenge and strategy without auto aim. But the PS1 versions of course are very very good.

I'm surprised no one has brought up Need for Speed. Isn't it waaay better on PS1?
As a side note, the original release of Myst for Saturn isn't better than the original PC version, is it?

No , the original Myst has to be the definitive version. However I think he meant for console. I wasn't aware of that either as there were certain systems better capable of producing the FMV etc like the 3DO version.

Yeah. Pretty mean when they do that jump and instantly kill you. My personal hero of resident evil is some dude from Hongkong going by the name of hk golden Mr A. Check out his YouTube channel.
