I can´t see a topic for Nights, surprisingly (only xmas nights) so I´ll just make one.
I mean, wow. Just wow.
I put off getting the game because I had played Claris´first stage in the XBLA demo and didn´t like it. There didn´t seem to be anything to the game - just flying in a circle going through rings and collecting orbs. Pretty dull. And I always failed to beat the boss, who seemed to be near impossible.
Recently though I picked up the Japanese version as it was dirt cheap (I didn´t want to pay the price for the PAL version), and I´m glad I did. That first stage in the Claris storyling is still pretty basic and that boss is still stupid and awkward to beat, but I´ve loved every other level. I love the little gimmicks they each one has too. The sledding and underwater bits are my favourite. The bosses are also pretty cool. The fat woman you throw through the walls is just amazingly fun.
Long story short, really didn´t think the game was for me... but it is. I want a 3D controller at some point for it though, as my hands ache after a while using the dpad.
What are your thoughts on this game?

Well yeah, it´s perfectly controllable. It´s just a bit more strenuous on my hand so I can´t play it for amazingly long before I need to rest my hand a bit!
I´ll get one before I go for A ranks, certainly!

I never understood why people constantly bigged up the 3D Controller for Nights as I used to manage just fine with a standard Model 2. However I'd never scored an 'A on any given level. My results were mainly three 'C's and occasionally if I was lucky one 'B' but then I got the 3D Controller and I started getting 'A's so I can't recommend the 3D controller enough.

Yeah I can imagine A's are tough with a dpad. That last boss is tlso tough using a dpad. Getting in between those tornado things are practically impossible. The rows of rocks are tough too. Makes him a lot more infuriating than he should be.

I had a pretty similar experience with NiGHTS actually, as I also played it first through the HD rerelease and didn't think too much of it, but it really clicked with me when I replayed it on the Saturn. I think part of that is because NiGHTS is so unique and hard to explain at first it doesn't really leave the best first impression when just jumping in. I swear that some of the collision detection and hitboxes are a bit iffy on the rerelease as well, especially Gillwing, I constantly seem to take damage when ramming him in the rerelease but that never happens on the Saturn version. Now it's one of my favourite games ever for it's atmosphere, soundtrack and sheer uniqueness. The only real issue I have with it now is just how short it is, but when a game desperately leaves you wanting more after it's over that's a good sign that it's a fantastic game.
I don't find A ranking too taxing in NiGHTS. Once you understand the formula of getting the Ideya as quickly as possible and then racking up as many points for as long as you can, only returning to the starting point at the very last second, it's simple enough to pull off. I'd be more worried about fighting bosses with the D-pad, both Wizeman and also Jackle with that fiddly card throwing attack he does. I definitely highly recommend getting the 3D control pad, it's analogue stick feels amazingly smooth and is wonderful for NiGHTS, it really feels like it was designed especially for that game. It's an excellent control in general too (I actually generally prefer using it for most games even if they don't support the analogue stick) so it's worth the investment.

The triggers are another great thing about the 3D pad. The D-pad is worse than on a standard pad, though, so I definitely prefer standard pads for games which don't support the analogue.

only the d-pad on the 2nd generation controller imo is better than the 3d d-pad.
still so many games use the analog in a better way, most notably burning rangers, deep fear, panzer dragoon saga from the top of my head

It's the best game Yuji Naka ever made. It's simple to play through, but it's meant to be replayed to the point of perfecting each track. The imagery in the game is also so beautifully done and carries a lot of symbolism.

I too don't like the HD upgrade. I really wanted to but the original just feels better.
NiGHTS is truly one of the most beautiful video games ever created. The colors, the imagination. But the music is incredible. I didn't play Nights a lot when it first came out. Just here and there but the music always stuck with me.
When I finally gave it a proper play years later, it was just amazing. Without spoiling, I loved how the story ties together in the final levels. Ive always been big into "dream" themed stuff and this game nails it.
The depth of the AI system as well as all of the different variations of level music you can unlock is so brilliant.
Even though Burning Rangers is seen as flawed and rushed by most - I just loved Naka's 2 Saturn efforts for their creativity.

Yes the remake looks nice enough but doesn't quite feel right. Not a bad game of course, it's still Nights.

I've actually grown bizarrely kind of attached to the D-pad on the 3D Control Pad for some games. It's nowhere near as precise, but I find that it's easier and more comfortable to perform fighting game special move inputs on because it's less stiff. I have a much easier time playing Cotton 2 with the 3D Control Pad for that reason. There are some games where it's far less practical though. I've had so many deaths in Bug in particular due to how easy it is to accidentally push the D-pad in a diagonal direction, which Bug really doesn't know how to cope with due to the game only allowing you to move in four directions.
On the topic of dream themed games, it's not a Saturn game, but I always felt that NiGHTS and Klonoa both have a very similar atmosphere. Klonoa 2 in particular is quite interesting in that it's subconscious world is divided up into different kingdoms representing human emotions. Both NiGHTS and Klonoa have that slightly surreal feel to them that I love.
