Yikes!!! I'd get rid of that before I'd use it. My CRTs are 4:3 so it isn't an issue for me.

The tech is a real rabbit hole and zyrobs knows more than any of us will ever need!!! It's great having him around for tech questions - esp about Saturn hardware. TLDR : If you want to use the CRT, buy a Saturn RGB SCART cable for a JP console. Plenty of online sellers. And no matter what you do , PLEASE, PLEASE, do not play the games in stretch-o-vision! Set the TV aspect ratio to 4:3......please.

He just means a Saturn RGB cable. Check out www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/sega/saturnIn my experience a lot of PAL CRTs only handle NTSC (what your JP Saturn produces) when using an RGB SCART cable. Modern TVs will handle any old thing with any old cable but with older consoles the picture will be pretty.....how can I put this......shit unless you use something like a RAD2X cable (which you will also find using that link).

Yep. Get an RGB SCART cable for the Saturn. You might also look at the SCART connector on the back of the TV to make sure it accepts RGB. Sometimes it will be marked as such on the TV casing. If there are two connectors it's usually the first one that supports RGB.
The cable won't be overly expensive. There are plenty of suppliers online.

It's cool and very interesting but it also explains the large amount of controller lag in the Cotton games on Switch.

Used to have this on PAL but went as part of my large clearout a few years ago. Always meant to upgrade to the JP version and here it is. In great condition too.

Sounds like an iffy controller, cable or port.

You shouldn't have to have a disc in to navigate the console settings.

You seem to be enjoying yourself. Learning about the hardware. Won't be effort wasted even if it doesn't work in the end.

Yeah - a voltage range is typical.
My Asteroids Deluxe cabinet has a multi-region transformer inside it (fitted originally by Atari - the people I bought it off refurbed it with a new "big blue" capacitor etc.) It has different plugs for different countries. There is a 200-240v and another plug for 220-260v.Mine is on the 200-240v which is appropriate for the UK.

AR carts can be flashed with new firmware. (called Pseudo Saturn? Not sure).
I think it allows backup discs to be played. Not sure about direct saving. Would be a great all-in-1 solution if it enables that!

The Action Replay doesn't support saving from games. But - you can copy system saves from the console's storage area to the AR to back it up. Means you won't lose those files when the battery dies - you can change the battery and then copy the files from the AR back to the console.
Fiddly but it's a workaround if you don't get your console modified.

The only mech game I've ever played was Assault Suits Valken (aka Cybernator) on SNES. It's great fun but very 2D. Not sure I'd enjoy a first person one. What are the Saturn mech games like re 2D/3D/isometric?

The thing about controllers like that is that you have to be sure the game supports them.....
