i have the action replay with the comm port on the top. With my model 2, In order to get it to work i just hold the start button when i boot up my saturn. If i have a jap game in and don't hold start the system boots to the menu screen to play music and wont boot up the game. Not sure if holding the start button is normal, since i just got the AR a few weeks ago

Hopefully somebody can answer this. I just received my ARP and it says 3 in 1. I keep seeing people talk about the 4 in 1 or 5 in 1. Is mine an older, less "good" ARP?

It's 3 in 1 because it's a memcard, mem expansion, and cheat device in one. It's 4 + 1 because it works with games that need 4mb expansion and ones that need 1mb expansion too (barring a few SNK titles).

i have a normal saturn memory card well i say normal the sticker is of some japanese writing with some sort of baseball patterning and some numbers 8 and 32 so it must of been for a game of some description but i tried it with a game that neds expansion and nothing happened it didnt work. is it just a memory card i thought all memory cards act as a ram expansion too.

No, memory cards give you more space for savegames, something like 16x the internal memory. The expansion gives the machine more RAM, nothing more nothing less. This is useful for arcade ports using a ton of animation, like X-Men vs Street Fighter, which was arcade perfect, while the Playstation version had 2-frame walking animations.

Ok, so now I'm having a problem with X-Men vs Street Fighter.
I plugged in my newly obtained ARP. Turned on my Saturn and saw the action replay menu. Copied a few saves the ARP, so no problems there.
Then I put in X-Men vs Street Fighter, which I've been waiting for the ARP cart so I could play.
The game starts up and seems fine until I get to a match. As soon as the first round starts, the game crashes and the screen says something about "CPU Address Error"
Does this mean I got a bad ARP, or is it possible that the cart slot on my Saturn is bad?
Or is the problem something else entirely?
Thanks for the help.

There are official Sega memory cards, and official Sega RAM cards. They should be easy to distinguish - one has an empty label (so you can note down there the contents of your savegames and such), the others have huge japanese letters stating 1MB or 4MB or whatever. All of them are generic and not locked to one game. So a 4mb ram card you get with Vampire Savior should also work with Metal Slug and so on. 1mb ram cards obviously won't work with games that need 4mb ones, though. Satakore lists which games need which cart: www.satakore.com/cartridge.php

IN THEORY... once you have one of Capcoms 'translucent' 4MB RAM carts (which actually says 4MB on it, as well as some Japanese text I cannot translate) you SHOULD be able to play all of Capcoms titles that require 4MB of RAM... AND all of SNK's titles that require 1MB of RAM. However...
Certain SNK titles are NOT fully compatible with the 4MB RAM cart. Real Bout Fatal Fury and SShodown 3 spring to mind. There's possibly more.
Truth be told, your best off using an AR4+1 with your fighters - as it covers both angles. Just a shame the memory card capability isn't more dynamic. It's an issue that really ticks me off about the Saturn vs that cart slots reliability.

I just got my AR from play-asia, and it works fine, however I have to put a lot of pressure on the cart to get it into the slot. Much more than some of the memory carts I have. Is this normal?
