Welcome to the forums and to the Sega Saturn. It's nice to see interest in the machine from younger ages.
Although importing Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers is a good idea for the purposes of your collection, you definitely need to play these games in English to appreciate them, so don't feel bad about making some PAL CD-Rs to go with your imports. At least you're not going down the emulator route, you'd still be getting the authentic experience on original hardware. And when you know the games well enough you can just ditch the CD-R's and play your imports.

At the moment, Saori Kobayashi's albums Terra Magica and Journey are heavily discounted, along with other Brave Wave CD's. store.bravewave.net/musicThis was announced as a 'Black Friday' sale so it could end anytime soon I suppose.

The triggers are another great thing about the 3D pad. The D-pad is worse than on a standard pad, though, so I definitely prefer standard pads for games which don't support the analogue.

I had this exact problem a few weeks ago.
Mine was also a model 1 Saturn, bought on launch day, and every sign pointed to it being a problem with an ageing laser. The key fact is that pressed discs are easier for lasers to read than burned ones. And though with certain brands of CD-R you might get better results, if the laser is dying the brand won't matter.
Actually, my laser was not so far gone that it couldn't read ANY burned disc; it varied from game to game: my Saturn read and played without issue Sega Ages: Outrun (J), the Panzer Dragoon games, Shining the Holy Ark and a few others. But Duke Nukem and Exhumed failed to read at all (disc just kept spinning). Shining Force III loaded but had disc read errors during battles, and Burning Rangers worked for the most part but crashed at the end of the first level, and then subsequently failed to load at all until I turned the Saturn off for a few hours.
This last incident is a strong indicator that the laser was not only straining to read cd-rs but that strain was weakening the laser even further.
I solved it by a buying a model 2 Saturn, which have a reputation for being able to read cd-rs more easily.
So I strongly suspect you will have to do similar, but you can carry out a few last checks before you go down that route:
1) Make sure the disc image is good. You can make absolutely sure of this by ripping an original game yourself, and then burning that image to CD-R. 2) try different high-quality CD-R brands. 3) try different games, like some of the ones I mentioned.

Looks like a shrine.
I would pray to it.

Some people may think putting their money into commodities like gold are ways of guarding against the further drop in value of the pound.
But Saturn games are where it's at.

It's a game that's very much in demand, and it does contain the definitive version of Street Fighter 2. £150 is probably fair value for it as things stand. And the definitive version of Alpha 2. But what is the definitive Alpha game in everyone's opinion here, 2 or 3?

Yep, my favourite game OST, and as you say completely unique instrumentation and feel which could only belong to the Panzer universe. It made a complete fan-boy of Saori Kobayashi out of me, who by the way this year released a solo album in the vein of Panzer music, which also included some contributions from other members of the Team Andromeda in the form of cover art and liner notes: store.bravewave.net/album/terra-magica

Nice find. On eBay? I used to own Enemy Zero and it's something I'd like to buy back. Definitely a unique game (and contender for the scariest).
And yeah, I now own Japanese scenarios 1-3 and PAL scenario 1. Ha, it's also my 2nd favourite game ever, after Deus Ex.

Yeah, once I got it in my head that I wanted to rebuild I became a bit obsessive about browsing eBay to catch good deals.
Annoying thing is I'm away from home for a month so won't be able to give my new games a spin for a while! Can't wait to revisit Shining Force III in particular.

After selling all my games about 7 years ago, I've started rebuilding my collection. I did have a fair bit of crap the first time round which I'm not going to bother rebuying; I'm only going to buy back my absolute favourite games, or else other classics that I sorely missed out on.
Kicked off with Shining Force III, Saturn Bomberman and Dark Savior (that's a new one to me) - all PAL versions.

Oops I said mb but I meant blocks.
That floppy drive is pretty cool! I never knew something like that existed. As for saving ghost files (yeah from Sega Rally, Daytona CCE and any other racing game which may have them) I'm covered, since the official backup memory cartridge does allow saving directly to cart. The floppy drive would just be needed to transfer that data from one cart to another.

As well as the additional Ram it also functions as a Memory Cart although you can't save directly to the cart whilst in game but you can transfer after. Its also a region converter so you can play games from any region. It also comes with Cheat codes for many games and also allows you to insert your own cheats as well. Interesting. Does that mean it's impossible to save ghost data from racing games with a 4in1 as they're bigger than the total system memory capacity? What about Shining Force III, which I think needs three save files at once, each 200mb+, in order to benefit from the synchronicity system - also impossible?

Regarding SCART/RGB hook ups is their a preferred cable/seller? Also, I don't have the memory pack/action replay...if anyone has a spare please let me know. You need to make sure the one you buy is copper shielded. I bought a cheapo scart from a Chinese seller and although there were no problems with image quality there was a loud buzzing whenever there was no sound being played by the Saturn. I got the copper shielded scart from this seller in the UK and eliminated the problem: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=152285685058#ht_1055wt_1398Welcome to the forum!
