I've heard this version is much better than the port we got in the US. But I can't find much info on it. Anyone have it and care to shed some light here?

I heard the same. I almost bought it once (for $5) but passed on it. Now I regret it as I can't seem to find a copy anywhere!
Basically from what I hear, the Japanese version fixes much of the framerate issue, AND adds system link.
It could be the Saturn's saving grace for Doom. Who knows?! Well... someone who actually owns a copy that is. :/ I can't even find a torrent with it.

Apparently it only has a very slightly upgraded fps, and thats a big VERY.
I haven't tried it myself but that's what I heard. Would be nice to see them compared side by side though.
Makes me wonder though,
why the hell would RAGE/GT tweak the fps a bit better for the jap version and not the US/UK/EURO version? makes no sense what so ever.

From what I've read, it was handled by a different development studio than the US/EU version.
The US port was published by GT and was developed by Rage, while the JP version was developed by Softbank Corp. and was Published by Midway.

This confuses me so much, why would there be 2 diff teams working on the same game to port just for different territories... publisher is one thing because not every publisher is in every country so sometimes different publishers are used to distribute world wide but a whole diff dev team for the actualy coding side!? WTF!?
I bet anthaema or w/e his user is knows something. He seems to be some kind of Saturn Bible.

There's a bucnh of vids on youtube of JAP Doom and it looks like it runs a lot smoother. I'm on the look out for it ready for when I get my Action Replay cart.

Yeah, the vids are just a bit low quality.

Actually yeah... I just saw some videos and it looked very playable.
Though I had no sound. Is the soundtrack the same as the PC version at least?

No, its the same as the US Saturn port and the PSX port unfortunately. However, I think it might be redbook audio. So it may be possible to swap the tracks out with the PC soundtrack, but I'm not sure.

I remember having great difficulty getting hold of the Jap copy of Doom, it only cost me about a fiver but it was absolutely ages before a copy popped up on eBay.

I decided to buy the pal doom and sure the frame rate sucks but I'm still having great fun playing the game!
Is the jap version officially better in terms of frame rate?

I know this is almost a 2 year old thread but someone on Sega-16 uploaded a video of E1M1 from the Japanese version of Doom for the Saturn:

So now we can finally lay this to rest. There is no mythical Awesome version of Saturn Doom, they're all shit.

From what the person who uploaded it said, the frame rate is better, but basically instead of fluctuating between 5 and 15 fps it fluctuates between 15 and 25 fps. Still not great, but a bit nicer.
