I must admit that reading of the Japanese version being supposedly superior, I was following this thread with some interest. However, it appears from the video that it really isn't noticeably better than the original ports. It's ironic, this was once a game that many Saturn gamers considered a must have game for their system (well, until they actually saw it!!), yet it helped convince a couple of my friends to pass on the Saturn for the Playstation. There's no escaping that some enjoyment can be had working your way through Saturn doom, but the frame rate is simply inexcusable. It's even more apparent, if you compare this with lobotomy's conversions, what a lack-luster port this is (let's not even bother comparing it to other ports or the PC incarnation!!). I've tried to play this, but I only ever seem to get a few levels in before I'm reaching for the off switch (or Exhumed) I'm afraid.

All console Doom ports suck, a lot of people had a pentium PC (and this was a game for the 486 originally) by the time Playstation Doom came out, let alone the heavily delayed Saturn Doom so it was hard to care about either. Both had the crappy music too.
Nowadays you have Doom multiplayer clients with dozens of players playing coop with ridiculous maps with like, 100 spider masterminds so even less reason to care about Saturn Doom.

Have the Jp version of Doom. Not that great to be hones but I managed to pick up a copy for the yen equivalent of a few quid. In hindsight I dont think I would have payed more for it.
To be honest I think I played it twice then just got it for my laptop.
On a slightly different topic anyone know if exhumed or hexen are any good on the Saturn?

exhumed is EPIC. the ONLY issue is when jumping on platforms if you're on the edge you'll slip off. it's no big deal for me though i can still play the game like a breeze

While I'm a big fan of the Saturn version of Duke Nukem (it's just so much fun to play!!) and to some extent Quake (Awesome conversion!!), Exhumed is still my favorite 1st person shooter on the Saturn. If you haven't already spotted it yet there was a recent thread regarding this fabulous game: segasaturngroup.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=games&action=display&thread=3818As for Hexen? Well, I've not actually completed it yet and it's not something that I'm in any great hurry to finish either (that alone should give you some indication of my opinions regarding it!!). while I enjoyed some of level design and the hub structure, I can't say I particularly care for it. As for the ridiculous game save size!!? Why!!? The game is completely redundant without saving!! At least you should be able to pick it up very cheaply these days.

Nowadays you have Doom multiplayer clients with dozens of players playing coop with ridiculous maps with like, 100 spider masterminds so even less reason to care about Saturn Doom. I really enjoyed the PSX version of Doom. I actually play it even more than the original PC version. It is true that the Doom community nowadays is still huge (I actually post regularly over at Doomworld Forums) and that all the sourceports like Skulltag and ZDoom are impressive, but I still almost prefer the console ports better. But that's coming from someone who's more of a console gamer than a PC gamer. As for the Japanese version of Doom on the Saturn, I'd really like to get a copy of it, but I'm not prepared to spend over $40 on it. Is there anything different about the Japanese version other than framerate. I tend to remember hearing somewhere that the music tracks are in a different order on the Japanese version.

if the framerate is indeed improved in the jpn release then i certainly can't see it, i would say dont waste the time and money on it unless your a die hard collecter.

I know this threads kinda old but I've just bought a JP copy of Doom off ebay for about £25. Mostly for my Doom collection but looking at the videos it seems like the framerate is more consistent. Still not as good as the PS1 or even the Jaguar but still an improvement over the US/PAL versions.

Let us know when you get it I assume you have the UK/US versions to compare? Even if you can't record footage you can at least confirm with a post

Yes I also have the PAL version. I don't find it too bad to play, though the 3DO version is even worse and I still consider that playable. Will definitely post my opinion on the JP version when I play it.
