Heya, SEGA Saturn UK forums... (I'm in need for your help once more!)
The story is so: I'm in the market for a new TV, and these days, all they sell is HDTV's. Now, all that is crisp and nice, but the problem is - I live in a PAL region and I barely get to see any HDTV's with S-video, if at all. The ones that I'm interested in don't have it, but they both have RGB and/or SCART (which are very popular in PAL), so my question is... is there any RBG/SCART to S-video converter that'll do the same job that a regular s-video input does?
I have 2 Saturns, an American model 1, and a Japanese Hi-Saturn model 1.
P.S: This question is also relevant to my Genesis (NTSC model 1 w/TMSS).
Thank you and sorry for the long text!

RGB Scart is superior to S-Video.
If for some reason you absolutely have to use an inferior S-video signal, most modern televisions have a Scart socket that supports S-Video input and an RGB Scart socket.

Hmm, does the saturn even output RGB natively? I've read that it doesn't... anyway... I take your reply as "yes, it's possible"? What do I need? A regular saturn s-video cable? An RGB to scart lead? (how did I miss that before? XD) Thanks for the quick reply

The Saturn will output RGB SCART - though you need to check the SCART cable is really RGB and not just a composite cable. Will be interested to hear how it looks on a new TV as I'm still using mine with a CRT.

Speaking of which, how do you figure? Picture quality? Look of connections? I do have compiste cables for comparison...

www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13966Make sure you get a compatible cable, a normal european RGB scart won't work with your NTSC systems unless you modify them. At first I didn't think NTSC systems were capable of RGB output at all without modification, but according to people here there are compatible cables.

I have a normal European RGB Scart cable for my NTSC TV (via to Component converter) and it works beautifully. (I'm Canadian)
So yes, the Saturn does natively output RGB. And yes, there is a way for us to experience RGB. (Component is darn close, and TVs here now support VGA which is just RGB with a different pinout)
Really, the only systems you have to worry about not outputting RGB is the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 and the really old consoles like the NES and before. (And the Nintendo 64 in PAL land)

Logically, the same holds true for my NTSC Genesis, but is there a similar thread on it? It's kinda late, and I'm out of time to search for it @king: The Component info is also very helpful, but I found me some NTSC SCART's, woo! Thanks though.

Yes NTSC Saturns, Genesis/MegaDrives, Master Systems, output in RGB. Official USA/JP cables only exist for Saturn. But you can get wonderful homemade cables from many places.

Yeah, those are probably the ones I'll be getting... I don't mind them being homemade... heck, I even prefer that... this thread has really been a huge help, thanks guys. I hope some confused Saturn fans stumble upon it later on if they'll be asking the same question that I am...

Picture quality going Saturn SCART directly to HDTV will be ok (usable) but not great (compared to a CRT). Make sure you get a set with minimal input lag too (which is getting very tricky these days). For best results, use a videoprocessor along with your TV if your budget allows.

I was kind of a late to the HDTV party, so I had the opportunity to compare the IRL performance of sets owned by the people around me before making the jump myself. Plasmas pretty much blows LCDs out of the water when it comes to viewing SD content, so you should consider going that route if you play alot of old video games.
