Out of curiosity what exactly is the test disc that's used for the laser adjustment? The manual we have states A-BEC TCD-792A. However it doesn't have any special tracks, just a couple of classical tunes on it. Unless the disc is constructed in a special way, I'd think that any real audio CD could be a possible substitute (not CDRs for obvious reasons, nor any recent "enhanced cd" style crap), or, heck, even a normal Saturn game - we are calibrating the lasers to read those, anyway. And if not a substitute, at least something close enough to get meaningful readings. Again, this is if the test cd is just a normal disc, and not something specially constructed for this purpose out of different materials/something else.

Out of curiosity what exactly is the test disc that's used for the laser adjustment? I tweaked the potentiometer on my Gamecubes laser a few years back simply because it had reached the point where it was essentially a brick, and I figured if I damaged it at that point I'd just look into either getting a whole new drive for it or just replacing it. There will be different discs for different lasers, or manufacturers. A lot of CD player manufacturers would actually glue their pots in position, to stop anyone from fiddling! There are pots that should never be touched on any pickup, and others that will have reference values in the service manuals (along with a test disc). If the laser diode deviates from that range, it should be replaced. *EDIT* thought I'd put this - oops! Different discs have different test data on them. Sometimes audio (for audio discs), sometimes data (for data readers) and some have deliberate errors to check how the machine handles them.

I'd rather you just keep your mouth shut. This has gone on long enough and you've successfully made an ass of yourself, ruined a thread, and very likely tarnished this community's reputation with your attitude. If you want to bitch at retro about how he wont share his toys with you take it to private messages. Stop acting like a spoiled child. <sigh> You do realize that it was the bickering between you and zyrobs that caused the downward spiral of this thread? I've seen your comments regarding reputation on sega 16 as well. Please understand that we're discussing video games here, not quantum physics.

The bickering wouldn't have happened if zyrobs would have kept is attitude in check. Nothing that was said to him warranted his behavior and how rude he was to omp in this thread. He immediately started going off the deep end at the simple mention of putting the files in a PDF. I understand that we are discussing video games, but if everyone thinks we're assholes like zyrobs here, that's not good for this site at all.

Please understand that we're discussing video games here, not quantum physics. Aww, crap! And I was about to ask - what does the red spectrum tell us about quasars?

That they are moving away from us really fast? I'm cool with discussing science. Hell, I am a scientist. But Jeez, lighten up people! This is a video game forum! Video games are fun right?

I'd gladly give up any respect and reputation a community has or had for me, if in return we'd get something that would benefit the community properly in the long term. Could you say the same? It wouldn't be the first time I did either. I'm not doing anything here for reputation or respect. If I did that, I'd be telling a lie to everyone, including myself. *EDIT* thought I'd put this - oops! Different discs have different test data on them. Sometimes audio (for audio discs), sometimes data (for data readers) and some have deliberate errors to check how the machine handles them. That's what I meant: the test disc we know by name only has audio tracks on them (going by the description PDF). So, a normal CDDA disc (presuming a better quality one, from a similar age, not a recent pop disc or a CDR) could be a possible substitute. Nor a perfect one, but a possible one, that could, at the very least, get us better readings than complete guesswork. That is, if the disc really only has audio on it.

If I did that, I'd be telling a lie to myself and anyone I talk with. If it was just your reputation on the line here that would be one thing. If it was just your reptutation I wouldn't care. But it's not. You have possibly tarnished this entire forum's reputation with your attitude. You can already see it in the thread over at AssemblerGames.

Actually very little, other than the speed at which a quasar is moving away from us and the approximate distance, i.e. age of the quasar. And the fact that they are all deep-space objects means that they are very old indeed (we see them as very old and relatively newly formed objects from early in the universes creation from our point of view btw). However, what a quasar actually IS, is still being debated despite a relatively newly agreed definition. There - I don't know sod all about electronics, but don't start me on cosmology lol!! (though I'll readily and happily listen to you guys talking minutiae all day) ;D *ha!! just noticed I was beaten to the punch on this one.

Nothing has been tarnished, you can't base a whole forum on one person, everyone knows that - If that was true I don't think I'd ever sign up for one. As it stands neither can we tell zyrobs or retro what they can and can't say, as long as it's within the rules, no harm done.

This is something I've learned from Calvin & Hobbes, and it so far stands true.
