Could a high res fighters megamix have been possible? I mean, with the 3D scenarios and lighting..

Were there any fighters on the Saturn that actually used the high resolution mode for all their graphics? Of those I am familiar with (including Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx and Dead Or Alive to name the better examples), only the background elements - drawn by VDP2 - were displayed in 704x448 while polygonal models handled through VDP1 are interlaced. Even non-combat titles like Digital Dance Mix resorted to this method for so-called high resolution visuals through VDP1, though few noticed because the effect is so well implemented! Now emulation is becoming more and more popular - not to mention possible in terms of the Saturn exclusively - we're now starting to finally see these kind of tell-tale signs that were previously hard to spot when viewing games on conventional television sets...
To answer your initial question, a high resolution version of Fighters Megamix could have been possible, but the likeliness of such a thing running at a frame rate acceptable for consumers is just as likely as the originally proposed graphical quality of Daytona USA for the Saturn. In other words, major sacrifices were necessary before the end product was considered good enough to leave the doors of AM2. For this reason alone, Yu Suzuki's team headed into 1996 with a revised mindset that higher overall graphical quality (boasting superior textures, lighting, etc.) would not be realistic unless the resolution of further projects was lowered, hence the reduction of pixels per frame in Fighting Vipers and ultimately Fighters Megamix. Digital Dance Mix was a rare exception, but looking at the Shenmue prototype and what little we know about Saturn Virtua Fighter 3 it's clear AM2 had reached the console's limits in terms of resolution and was looking to branch out into maxing the system's other capabilities.

What do you find to be the most overrated game? *Tin hat on* For me it's Nights, I've never gotten into this game at all, while it is indeed a very pretty game to look at, and it is fairly decent, I just think it's a bit over hyped (but each to their own lads), personally just does not grab me like other games do, not varied enough for me. Hehe. I was going to say Nights myself. I still have it but for some reason could never get into it. Not sure why but i just 'don't get it'. I have the 3D controller for it (Honeybee??) but still... I think it has to do with me getting a Saturn only about 5 years ago, so i never really got to play it during its 'Time' and hence missed out on the magic of the moment (in comparison to other games at the time it came out). I guess its like people bagging Cybermorph now on the Atari Jaguar (pack in game) but for anyone that got it THEN it was quite groundbreaking (non-linear, graphics for its time, morphing effects, etc). I always likened it to that, but i guess i'll never really know...

I remember, from back in the day, the very few of my mates who had a Saturn all owned Bug!. I'd seen reviews in mags whilst deciding whether to get a Saturn or wait for Nintendo's next offering. Bug! was seemingly well-received and my mates all liked it. I can only remember playing it once or twice and but I just didn't get it. At all. I might get a copy of it and try again.
I must say on this note that I think NiGHTS is one of the most under rated games ever. When you're into it, there's nothing better than getting a huge link. Nothing. Second best game ever created by anyone!

I never understood what was so special about Sega Rally myself. It's okay, I guess.

I never understood what was so special about Sega Rally myself. It's okay, I guess. The thing about Sega Rally was that we all played Ridge Racer, Daytona and Sega Rally in the arcade, then the home version was announced. We all anticipated the release of the home version of SR with some excitement, but we didn't for a minute imagine just how spectacular it would be. Spectacular and faithful to the coin-op. This was a revelation. SR was special because of the arcade connection. Ditto Virtua Fighter. Daytona was a let down and Touring Car, well we all know how that turned out. Those who didn't play it in the arcade can't really understand the significance of just how important it was at the time. When it was in the arcade, al lwe had to play was Megadrive and Snes at home.

Actually, the conversion team behind Sega Rally made every possible effort to surpass the original arcade version by taking full use of many little-known features that made the Saturn superior to the Model 2 board. For example, did you know the arcade hardware can only display textures in monochrome, while the Saturn can handle up to 16 colours per polygon? This difference allowed for a more faithful home treatment, with the only notable differences being the absent rear view mirror and a reduced frame rate. Still, the overall effect was of a game that near flawlessly resembled its source both graphically and in terms of gameplay... unlike certain other titles I could think of (naming no names, Daytona USA or Touring Car)!

Tomb Raider doesn't control like Mario, because TR isn't an action game. It's a slow paced adventure game. More like the orignal Prince of Persia with no timer. The controls in TR work great, Lara will do exactly the same thing every time. And you need this to judge the jumps in the later levels properly. Comparing TR to Mario seems odd to me, they are completely different game styles.

For me Sega Rally & Virtua Fighters 2 are the biggest overated games in Saturn history. Yes they were perfect arcade conversions. But the lack of added extras gives it a poor rating in my book. Looks and gameplay can not save those games alone. There is absolutely no longetivity factor and lack of replay value in either of the games. Four tracks for any racer is poor and no proper endings in a 'beat em' up' is almost criminal in my book. What were SEGA thinking when they just lazily ported it over to saturn? They're still great games but they could have been alot better.
I have a love hate relationship with Nights so I can't really comment on it. Guardian Heroes though, is extremely overrated. Great game but not as good as everyone makes out.
