The RGB SCART cables for PAL and JPN consoles are different. I used a PAL cable with my Japanese console for ages but had issues occasionally (getting a b&w picture sometimes). Once I started using a powered SCART switch I had to get a JPN cable for it to work with it but have had no issues since.

I notice that this a PAL/NTSC cable. Are these cables genuinely compatible with both systems?

As long as you get the signal voltage from pin 4 and not pin 1 then there's no reason it can't work on both consoles.

There are def issues. Here's a video of my PAL RGB cable I got with my saturn in '97, with a JPN saturn vimeo.com/118757975The cable would be fine if you could find some sort of powered SCART hub (you may read posts about one from Argos for a tenner, but those posts are years old and such a device is hard to find nowadays, especially at that price) You might be fine with RF (I dunno, but F that). Like you'll read everywhere, it's all about getting the right voltage from one of the pins, as the AV out on PAL and JPN saturn a are different. Rob at consolegoods.co.uk is usually your man, be he tells me he's out of stock for 3 months. That eBay link looks good though, if a tad pricey. I've yet to pull the trigger on an RGB lead that will 100% work at full RGB quality in the UK, with my JPN Saturn.

The cables I linked to have quality about on par with the official cables that came with model 1 units. The one that came with model 2s has less audio noise, but of course they are pal only. They are worth the money, unlike the cables from consolegoods which are awful with no shielding, shit load of audio noise, and picture ghosting.

If your cable is wired to take voltage from Pin 1 and use it for RGB up signalling then it won't work on an NTSC console, since that output is sync and the voltage will fluctuate. A "powered SCART hub" is unlikely to change that. If it's wired to take voltage from pin 4 it'll work fine on either machine. Not rocket science. Grab the cable from eBay or get RetroGamingCables.co.uk to build you one to spec (their cables are all shielded now).

By powered SCART hub I'd assume that he means something that uses its own power source to create the RGB Up signal, instead of taking it from the console, in which case it would work. I don't know if they make any of those though.

I bit the bullet and bought the one from Poland, I've been staring at composite for so long now, I'm expecting the difference to blow me away...

Even then most switches are designed to route composite too, so likely to only amplify what they get in, so if the switch doesn't see enough voltage on RGB up it's not going to add that into the signal.

I doubt it, especially if you ever saw a Saturn on a CRT, but it'll be an improvement.

It'll def be an improvement on the LCD, but I'm always looking for a good old CRT on eBay, around £50. Trinitron or B&O probably. I think Sanyo do some good LCDs for about £35 on eBay too, see advertised as cctv monitors. Nice little screens
