I know what you mean, it's difficult to put into words just how much better Capcom are than SNK. It's not even a fair comparison! Maybe SNK vs ADK or Takara, that's about their level. HMMM... I'd love to agree wholeheartedly, but I can't. I like them both, but in different ways. Certainly, my fighting game preferences (nowadays) strongly lie in SNK's camp - mainly down to the sheer detail, style, character designs - right down to how they animate/fighting styles, music and overall presentation. However, Capcom are equally as painfully stylish, but just in a different way. I still regard 3rd Strike as the best 2D fighter ever made, SNK fan or not. I love MOTW, but at the end of the day, I feel 3S is easily the better game The problem is for me, re: Capcom games nowadays is that I most of them - outside of 3S - a bit boring. It's got nothing to do with how well they play or how well crafted they are, I just don't get that same excitement or 'kick' out of them that I get when playing the likes of (say) KOF 99 or RB2. I think I like 3S so much, not only because it's a technical masterpiece (in all areas) but because I found the change up in character designs and fighting styles interesting and fresh - vs SF2 & SFZ series. Even including little system nuances like the super jump, parry and EX moves make it much more interesting to me. Incidentally, I think it's most of these things that originally turned PPL off from SFIII (thus why SF4 is an evolution of SF2 3D, really) which probably says something about my personal preferences regarding fighting games. I hardly ever play any 2D Capcom fighters now outside of the SFIII series because they just don't hold my attention like they did when I was in my teens through early 20's. An obvious go to for me was the CapVsSNK series, but I don't really play that much anymore, not because I dislike it, but because I am no longer surrounded by the same-minded friends I once was re: vs play. Playing the likes of the SFZ series, for example, just feels really stale nowadays, with maybe Z3 being the slight exception due to different ISM's and character change-ups since SFZ2. In the case of SFZ2 for example, you just have nothing to work with. Not even dash/back dash, something which even Fatal Fury 2 had in '92. Darkstalkers series is well loved, but as I think I mentioned here (can't remember?) a short while ago, I just never really got on with the characters or their fighting styles (super ironically). I think it was all a bit too tongue-in-cheek for my liking. Not that my games have to be super-serious or anything (I like personality) but the series never grabbed me as much as I WANTED it too. It certainly is more interesting than the SF series (sans III). Obviously there is the Marvel licensed games, which I think up until (and NOT including) MVC2 were fantastic. Especially the vs series, probably due to the ridiculous animation and OTT gameplay mechanics. They're just interesting and exciting to play, in a different way to SNK titles, but great nonetheless. On the whole, it is definitely arguable that Capcom fighters are better than SNK fighters and vice-versa, but Capcom just have nothing outside of SFIII that compares to KOF, SShodown, Last Blade, Real Bout etc for me, personally These arguments/disputes were best settled via the Capcom vs SNK series over a decade ago. I schooled plenty (not that you are one btw) of SNK no-knowledgers with the likes of Iori, Rock & Mai, many of which are not so much 'converts' as much as now being appreciators of both 'worlds'...

iceman... Really, very well done. That looks to be in stunning condition via the pics. So, some guy bought a bundle of 5 not long ago to resell/flip on eBay for l@@k.. r@Rez monies? So, are these actually rare or not then? Or just difficult to locate due to cultural and language differences (i.e. Korea apparently being very forward minded and always moving on, not hoarding/being nostalgic). What's your experienced opinion? EDIT: That's the first time I have ever laid eyes on a Samsung Saturn and thought "Yep. That actually does look like a cool Saturn to own". Never thought that before yours here

JUST TO CONFIRM... when you say you've plugged it in on RGB SCART, do you mean: 1) You have an RGB SCART lead that you use with the Saturn that you have plugged into the SCART on this TV or... 2) You have an RGB SCART lead that you use with the Saturn that you have KNOWINGLY plugged into a confirmed/definite RGB SCART socket on this TV. The reason I ask is that your RGB SCART lead won't work with the TV properly if it can't accept an RGB signal. for example, most larger CRT's have 2x SCART sockets, but only ONE is usually RGB compatible

SORRY SYNT...
It wasn't me.
I haven't got the energy for the old Capcom vs SNK discussion right now.
Needless to say though...

Why would I play SNK fighters when I can play Capcom fighters? Oh no Synty. Please. Let's not do this. Not today...

So what's the advice for carts then? I have a AR 4+1 which always stays plugged into the system, never once had the need to remove/re-insert it. NO, NO! THAT'S FINE... you've pretty much nailed it. It really is that simple. Don't touch the cart whatsoever when it's on and just don't ever remove it - turned on OR off. If you decide you want to get an official memory expansion, your best ACTUALLY buying another Saturn to use it with, as swapping carts in and out casually (which would seem normal behaviour) is fatal!

It makes me very angry too (as angry as one can get over videogames anyway). It's the only system that I can think of off hand that gives me grief with save files. You are not alone in leaving games unfinished for a few years and then wanting to return to them... I have had this happen to me a few times now but it doesn't get any easier seeing a few years worth of save games go up in smoke. I TOO CAN'T THINK OF ANY... hell, even my 3DO that I've had since my teenage years (long behind me now!) STILL has my battery backed save files from waaay back when. The Saturn, is without doubt, a f*cking shambles when it comes to save game management. Sure, you can save them to and from the AR4+1 in between times, but even my AR cart has since flashed itself into oblivion for no reason whatsoever - and believe me, I'm painfully careful with my Saturn cart handling skills. Jesus. All my shmup highscores having to be redone over and over again. I just try to think of it as being akin to a cart based console instead without save capability. Most certainly limits my playtime concerning larger games though. Also, what the f*ck is up with VF2 demanding 180 blocks of your internal memory? Greedy sod... Jeez.

Yeah I hate the idea of owning more than one of the same system but guess I should for the Saturn otherwise I am rolling the dice each time I swap carts. Stupid fecking thing. I KNOW, IT SOUNDS DAFT... but it's actually true. Sadly, through trial and error But yeah, get a couple of systems, switchless mod them (if possible) and then - at the minimum(!) - have 2x consoles, 1 with official mem.card and one with AR4+1 for those lovely RAM needy titles. More seriously, this recurring issue has at times, made me consider just selling the Saturn sometimes. Yes, impulsive and extreme I know, but it really does offend me. At least I know, for all the hate the PS1 gets, I can return to my save games 5 years later, and they're still there, all the same. Ahem... yes, it sometimes takes me sometimes to finish my games Ultimately: unnecessary and annoying

I played a few RAM cart games recently, put the (official) memory card back in today and now the system wants to format it. Arsebiscuits. WHAT THE FUCK... have I said time and time again Synty me old mucker? One Saturn for Memory Card One Saturn for AR4+1 (or 4MB or 1MB) One Saturn for KOF 95 + ROM cart (if no NGCD, MVS or AES available) ...and you're set Seriously though, honestly, one Saturn with a cart in that you NEVER remove for memory. Too many times have I learned the hard way Sorry 'bout the bad news. Maybe it could correct itself?

IF HE'S A 3RD STRIKE PLAYER... like his handle suggests ( ) he'll probably go with Ken - from a competitive standpoint! Also, he's probably from the UK, as I don't think I've ever heard of any country abbreviating their names quite like we do over here, eh Darren? ;D Welcome to the forums btw! I enjoy Chun Li (3s only mind), Ibuki & Ryu myself

For me it depends on how much I want the game. If I REALLY want the game (eg. Contra or Mr Bones) I will just BIN it. But I still very much buy my games through auctions. Even if that means waiting another 7 days for the auction to finish. The other thing I do is notice how close the auction price is to the BIN price, give up on the auction and buy the BIN (ya know, provided it is CIB and in good condition) because you can bet your left nut when that auction finishes, the losers will go off and try and find the next closest BIN. Hell, I've done that myself when I started collecting Saturn stuff a few years back. But now I am a little more experienced, I know to jump in so people don't beat me to it. Sometimes it is not worth being in the auction when the price is too close to the BINs. It doesn't happen often but it does, I am on that like flies on shit. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH... what has often happened to me, in that the auction has exceeded the BIN price after waiting 9d for it to finish etc. It all just feels like a BIG waste of my time when that happens. I know it isn't, technically, but I just don't enjoy the waiting and then the not winning. I'd sooner just look for BIN's (with Best Offers too) if I can. When looking for certain games I always click on BIN only in the selection tab too. Auction participation just isnt for me I guess. A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS... certainly, the soundtrack in Shinobi X doesnt change the gameplay one bit, however, I do feel it makes for a more enjoyable experience with a better (the PAL) soundtrack. I have both the PAL & JP versions and only ever fire the JP version up to hear how much better X is AND... never ever heard of 'Double Switch'? What the f*ck is that? Is it the usual "it's the US name for Die Hard Arcade" or something similar? Gotta love the whole multi-regional name changing shenanigans of old...

AH! WINNING AUCTIONS... I remember those days, when I was patient and could be arsed fannying around with last minute bidding and whatnot. Sadly, I'm now prepared to pay a little extra on BIN, just to save me the pain. Congrats all the same EDIT: Quite fancy Robotica btw. Will pick that one up at some point...
