Tried another seller but I think the language barrier has prevented my question being answered. We leave that one where it is! The seller answered: Yes, if it is Sega Saturn in Japan it will move. I suspect google translate has let us down!!

Weird.....
My version of Baku is PAL and it runs full screen so seems to have some sort of work done on it.....maybe this is an NTSC thing? Maybe the PAL version doesn't have that control issue? I certainly don't remember it being like as you have experienced.
I have Puyo Tsu as well.I'll check both again and compare notes. Have the PAL version of Puzzle Fighter - it wasn't PAL optimised but I didn't notice any control lag. I'll give that test too on both PAL and JPN consoles.

That's really weird. Your experience of Baku Baku is at odds with my own. I found the controls responsive and precise. Maybe you're a player of very high skill and notice lag that others wouldn't? I know high skill level shmup players can detect a frame or two of lag - no doubt higher level tetris players would too. You've certainly mentioned a few of the better puzzle games in your post so you are experienced in the genre.
I have read many reviews of this game and control issues have never been mentioned in any of them.I ran a Baku Baku competition in work with the Saturn rigged up to a projector and it went down a storm - noone mentioned any control issues - although many of those people would be casuals.
Maybe there's something wrong with your copy of the game?
Are you playing the PAL version on a PAL machine? I've noticed sticky control when playing NTSC Tetris Plus on a PAL console with the AR cartridge for example.
I know sticky control when I feel it - the pretty awful Tetris S on Saturn has iffy controls but I haven't noticed it with Baku.

I had the PAL port of Darius 2 but I sold it as I just wasn't playing it that much. The PAL borders didn't help either. I intend to get the JP version of it at some point.
It is beautifully emulated in shmupMAME 4.2 now though - it would look great on a big widescreen monitor!

That video puts me off of scalers altogether. It just highlights that all of them have issues, even when you chain in like 3 of them. Your annoyance should be with planned obsolescence. In a perfect world, modern 4K sets would still have the analog inputs that were still common just a decade ago and handle the older signals with care. There wouldn't be a need for all the extra A/V equipment. That's perhaps a bit unfair. Digital TVs are fundamentally different pieces of technology. The only console I have significant issues with on a modern TV is the N64. It doesn't have the cleanest image at the best of times (though using s-video does help an awful lot) but pushing it through a modern TV with a bigger screen size makes matters worse. At the end of the day leaving out tech that only a small number of people will use ensures modern TVs are affordable. Not many people play retro consoles and an awful lot of those who do don't seem all that interested in image quality going by the number of youtube videos made by people who don't even bother to record retro game footage at 4:3 aspect ratio. I'm holding onto my CRT as long as possible though. Maybe by the time I have to abandon CRT (and I hope that is a long time), scalers will have improved a bit more

This kit will always be a compromise against a CRT.
The Wii and PS3 showed the way light gun games should be done. The Wii was criticised for accuracy but I had no issues with it - there's a challenge mode in Ghost Squad that has no aiming reticule and I had no problems with it.
Sadly it is always going to be a niche product - but remakes for modern consoles using pointing tech as a replacement for light guns will be the best solution. Trouble is how viable will that be with projected low sales?
Incidentally , did anyone ever try Link's Crossbow Training for the Wii? Lovely little game that. I was expecting a lot less for the price but Nintendo made a bit of an effort with it.

Every time I've had issues with the Virtua gun it has been because I need to turn the brightness up. Whack it up and then gradually turn it down until the gun stops working so you know where to set it when playing.
I experienced this with the Dreamcast gun too.

Yes. excellent information.....have a query off to a seller right now as I've decided to take the plunge and get a copy. I might just fork out for a white 3D controller as well.

Would be interested in this too - have a white Saturn and I'd like to get Sega Ages Outrun for it and the flog my PAL Sega Ages.
EDIT: just checked satakore.com and it states there is a 2nd revision of the game that works on all models. I don't see any info on how to tell the revisions apart though...

Interesting. I'll look into that. Many thanks.
I was afraid that I was going to have to look for another CRT and they are getting harder to find where I live.....

Definitely worth getting. It encapsulates everything that was great about Sega.
I have the PAL version disc only - I keep the disc with the full game in my PAL version case.
I like the look of the JP version as it has its own jewel case with nice covers - what are the menus like in that version - are they in English? I'd probably sell the PAL version and get that if it's import friendly re menus etc.

Hmmmmmm..... what would make it go away though? It has stopped happening with no changes made to the setup. It went way for a couple of years and then came back for a week or two.
I wouldn't call it a buzz - like a high pitched screeching sound - not very loud - just very high pitched. Gets louder with brighter images. Very odd.
I'll need to keep close eye on what I'm doing to see if I can figure out what is causing it to re-occur.
