PS1 apparently had a really good sound chip too which was removed after the first model to cut costs.
I get the impression that all early CD-based consoles must have had good sound chips to show off the new technology.
I'm still in the process of sorting out my audio set-up, but I'm interested to hear how my £45 Saturn compares to other sources that now cost much more.

I've just bought a new DAC/headphone amp and I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect it to the Saturn.
Do I just need to buy a composite cable and plug the sound ones into the DAC or is there a better 'audiophile' solution?
Sorry if there's already been threads on this in the past. Cheers.

Ok I played the last level up until the climbing bit (after the water section).
The camera and twitchy controls meant I didn't even bother using all my continues to try and complete.
I really like the idea behind the game. I just find it too frustrating to play.
I'd recommend watching a full play through to anyone thinking of buying it.

Haha. Step down from the ledge, son. I could have easily resisted the temptation not to get involved. Anyway, my plan is to complete BR today and deliver the final verdict. Then we can get back to arguing about the game instead

You have good taste in dictionaries. Webster > OED. With that said there's three other definitions that go into greater detail and can very clearly apply to opinions. Personally, I think I made a pretty airtight and succinct case that opinions can be more or less objective. I don't think there's a valid argument otherwise. Agreed. Their thesaurus is the best in the business. I still think you're wrong though I'm a professional editor and copywriter, so I'll bring this up in the office and let you know the consensus. Unless SS:UK has had enough of experts RIP Burning Rangers thread xxx

an opinion can be drawn from objective facts, but the opinion itself is subjective. Not sure how this thread turned into a grammar lesson, but this is the only sentence that matters

TBH the price didn't set my expectations at all. Rather, it's the only reason I'm going sit down and play it all the way through.
I do 'get it' though -- it's a really well-presented game and a unique concept.
I have the NTSC-JP version as well and I'll probably never sell that, as the artwork is just too fucking cool. (And I only paid £18 for it.)

Played through again today and I feel less offended by BR's shortcomings. Camera is still abysmal though, I can't believe people say it's fine. Agree that it's absolutely fine for a short blast and nowhere as dated as some other games in the genre.
Will try to complete it -- I've never been very good at seeing games through, but it's so short I have no excuse.

Ok I haven't practiced flying sideways, maybe that will help.
I forgot about TR's tank controls actually, I would probably throw it out the window if I played it now.
Will update this post if BR grows on me.

Finally got around to playing Burning Rangers this weekend. This game is one of the main reasons I bought a Saturn console, so I thought I'd post my thoughts, especially since there's a chance of getting a discussion going... From the minute I loaded up the game , I absolutely loved its presentation. The TV cartoon-style intro movie and theme song are perfect, The professionally cheesy voice-acting, graphics (lighting effects) and atmosphere all fit with each other brilliantly for a 1998 action game. As soon as the gameplay starts, though, Burning Rangers' main problem is obvious: Dat camera The game really does feel unplayable at times and is nausea-inducing. I completed the game's underwater mission and felt like I'd been through astronaut training -- I physically couldn't continue. (For the uninitiated, making your way through the game requires listening out for auditory warnings of imminent explosions, then pressing Down on the D-Pad to perform a back-flip and avoid taking a hit.) The gameplay is unfortunately fundamentally flawed: half the time, your character will back-flip into a wall, get stuck on the scenery, and become engulfed by a series of blasts until you die a few seconds later. Not that the game is particularly difficult; it's just sometimes uncontrollable. It's been a very long time since I played Tomb Raider or other late-'90s action titles, but now I desperately want to, so that I can decided whether they share these frustrating elements as products of their time, or if this Saturn game is a tad overrated. On the plus side, I really enjoyed the overall 'experience' of Burning Rangers. Its style and concept are unique, which is what attracted me to it, and I can totally understand its cult appeal. My curiosity is well and truly satisfied, but when the time is right, I won't hesitate to sell it on. 5/10 would still bang.

I just bought NiGHTs from Sych, and as you'd expect from a long-time forummer/contributor, everything went perfectly. The game was in the condition described and was heavily padded with bubble wrap. He even made an effort to pad the inside to stop the CD rattling around (it didn't quite work mate, but nice effort ). Everything was also sorted v quickly. Five star customer review.
