I also have to say that while the frame rate is poor SEGA Touring Car is pushing a ton of polygons and getting little help from the VDP2 its really impressive at times.
Which makes you wonder why the didn’t just remove a lot of the geometry.
The game runs quite smoothly during qualifying with no other cars on track where as it falls apart during the Brick Wall Town stage, largely in part due to all the buildings being rendered.
I agree and the In-Car rear view mirror should have been dropped to help with performance. I just felt the game was rushed out to make it out for the Christmas 1997 date when it should have been held back for a few months...
Also have to say Zero Divide has some wonderful 3D graphics
Dead or Alive should get a mention, Saturn port is imo better looking than VF2 as there is no texture warping and the 3D is pretty solid 60fps all round.
daytona USA championship circuit edition has some decent 3D too alas the gameplay is not quite the same.
That's a could call because Daytona USA CE is pure Saturn VDP 1 polygon grunt and no using the VDP2 to help out (other than the bonnet view)
Burning Rangers must be pushing the Saturn to the limit. I loved how the game even had proper physics for the sparks/particles and how they would bounce around on the floor.
Fully agree, it seems to be doing the most out of all Saturn games when it comes to pushing every 3D capability.
It’s a shame it took until 1998 to get there, I always wonder how differently thing would have gone if the Sega Graphics Library had been developed earlier.
Not sure but to be fair the SGL tools were given to developers in early 1995 .

I actually think Victory Boxing doesn't get enough credit for just how great it looks. I'll also add Keriotosse, Grandia, Ninepen Manmaru, Elan Doree, Winter Heat and Keriotosse to that list. I always thought the 3D sections in Enemy Zero blend incredibly well with the FMV sequences.
I agree
Have to say Layered Section 2 has amazing graphics on the Saturn with some of the best use of Polygons on the system. Just a shame about the horrible mesh effects
It get so little credit. I really think Die Hard Arcade is one of the best looking Saturn games. Super solid 3D graphics with no break up and some of the best texture mapping in any Saturn or PS game for that matter

For all out Graphics and games that make the best and full use of Saturn hardware, I would say nothing can touch Grandia, Decatthlete or Radiant Silvergun The Penta boss made my eyes pop out when 1st played it.

Not the SEGA Guys . Tbh I think they've called it mostly correct this time, though I always said VF3 on the DC was 90 to 95 perfect IMO. Its funny how both the DC version of VF3 and Shenmue had super low res 2D backdrops
Games are never made to be judge on how they play or look in 20 years time. I've never really got this 'aged badly'
Some games have aged much better than others though as their mechanics were adopted by the industry while others weren't.
Mario 64, Quake, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil were all critically acclaimed back in 1996, but fast forward to 2023 and only Mario 64 and Quake have aged well. Yes Mario 64 has camera issues, but the overall control isn't too dissimilar to Mario Odyssey. Most FPS games on PC still control just like Quake did.
Regarding Tomb Raider, I would like it to return to its roots in some aspects, a move towards exploration over combat, a return to actual tombs, and of course the return of sassy Lara (the confirmation of the return Camilla Luddington would probably be enough to put me off the next game), while maintaining the modern control scheme.
No game is made with how it will be judged in 20 years' time. Quake controls no different from Duke Nukem to me, it's an FPS after all, in just the same way most racing games, controls the same since Pole Position or whatever
I do agree it would be nice to get back the sense of exploration and adventure from the 1st Tomb Raider. I think Shadow Of Tomb Raider was a step in the right direction.
I liked how Capcom took RE back to its roots with RE7, taking place in an enclosed environment. That game scared the shit of out me.
Great game, more puzzle solving than its successors & tricky enough, but not horrifically hard.
I love the game too the 1st game really captured the experience of exploring tombs. The controls weren't great back in the day but I overlooked that because how amazing the game was to play. It was incredible that a tiny little British studio made such an amazing 3D game
My my issue with the game is I think they should have been more save points in the levels. I loved playing this and Exhumed late at night on the Saturn
Look at something like Tomb Raider or Resident Evil. At the time they were incredible and an amazing experience, these days the controls are a pain in the ass, but that's missing the point. No game is made on how it will be judged in 20 years time
At the time just getting Quake on a console was amazing, never mind at how good it looked and played. I used to love playing that game late and night on my Saturn. The music used to make me so scared at times LOL
Saw someone tear apart Tomb Raider on the Saturn. Ludicrous, I still thoroughly enjoy playing it. A masterpiece at the time.
Its just stupid, isn't it. I saw someone rip apart Jet Set Radio the other day. Its just silly that game was an amazing experience at the time.
I fully agree - even the best games from back then could be pulled apart critically today. Quake was one of the best.

I loved it at the time & whilst looking back it can be pulled apart critically by some, I think you have to be impressed that they got the game running as well as they did on a system that couldn't really handle it.

I loved the light and the music was something else, I also loved the VDP2 clouds. I really wished at the time Lobotomy were given the task of porting Half Life to the DC. They would have done a far better job IMO than Captivation Digital
