Just picked up Guardian Heroes and The Legend Of Oasis from a local shop a few days ago. I'm quickly buying all of their Saturn games! Prices?

I didn't really find any topic on this although it's likely to be explained around somewhere... Anyway here it goes: does a japanese King of Fighters 95 Rom work with a pal version? I found a potentially good deal, but i really wanted to confirm this. Thanks in advance ; ) I *think* it does, don't quote me on this though. Besides, every so often a PAL cart turns up on its own and I've never seen them go over £10. I managed to get mine for £40 with the card box intact and everything else included, so I think I got a good deal on it.

So had a trip down to the seaside town of Cleethorpes for the beach and such, as it was a sunny day. With all the talk of arcades in the Trocadero thread, I was hoping I'd find a few good Sega games. There was your House Of The Dead's, Sega Rally's, OutRun 2's, and a Star Wars Arcade Trilogy (only 2nd one I've ever seen), you know, regular stuff. But one standout was Cool Riders.
(Apologies if video isn't in good quality, this was done by my phone)
I'd never even heard of this one, but first impressions were good. Right from the off I could tell it was different. It immediately hit me that it was a Super Scaler game. It was only 30p, compared to the 50p+ of the other games. And it had the look of 80s/early 90s around it. Had a couple of goes, was good fun, got a fair way into it.It was basically OutRun but with motorbikes and slightly better graphics. Also the whole thing was in Japanese which was something. But, after finishing, I noticed that it was copyrighted 1995. I thought it was pretty interesting, seeing the Model 2 had been out for a while and the Model 3 was just around the corner.
I took to Sega Retro shortly after and it came up with some intriguing stuff...
Not only was it never even properly released in Europe (which makes it VERY odd that it was in sodding Cleethorpes of all places, and explains the Japanese), it was pretty much the last of the Super Scaler games to come out, has no ports making it very obscure, and it was the only game to be made for the Sega H1 Board, which makes it VERY hard to emulate, and it also doesn't help that it was only released in dual cabinets, not stand-alone. Plus, it shares some of the same code as OutRunners, which explains the similarities.
What's more, it's CPU was the very same as the Saturn's, which makes it quite interesting that it never got a Saturn port. I mean, it came out around the same time, the board it ran on was similar, and since Rad Mobile got a port, I could picture it being a later Sega Ages game, maybe a final game from Sega in 1999 possibly, or a mid 1995 release. Of course it would be Japan only, It was only really known there, aside from a limited release in the U.S., and even then it was a small footnote in Sega's arcade history.
Thoughts?

A retro shop near me in Derby had it for £7.50 I think... Looking back on it I think I should've bought it. There's a chance it's still there, but last time I went was about a month ago.

Tonight my parents had some friends round for dinner. Known them for quite a while, and the subject of retro games has been brought up before when we we've been with them. They've said they once had a Game Gear with a few Sonic games, Streets Of Rage, Columns, Super Monaco GP and a Indiana Jones one, but they'd long since binned it after the capacitors went kaput like most do before. However today was very interesting regarding games. Spoke to them about what games I'd got recently for the Saturn, when one of them tells me their brother had one with around 20 games, he was apparently very into it. They said there was a chance he still had it, but even if he does it's gonna be very hard to get it as he lives in Switzerland now. But, they then go on to say they had A SODDING VECTREX when they were younger with 5 games. Best part is, it's currently with their parents, who they know kept everything up in the attic and all in it's original boxes, including the screen overlays. The Vectrex is just as scarce here as it is over in the US, if not more, and I'm just utterly speechless. They said that they're sure they'd let me have it, and since I've had the pleasure of playing one before at a gaming museum (and loving it), I'm stoked. They said they'd speak with their brother and parents, but warned me it might take a while and can't guarantee I'll definitely get them, especially for the Saturn stuff. But hey, with a bit of luck, I could have a very rare piece of gaming history and a stack of new Saturn games .

Earlier this week I went to Lincoln, where the nice little retro shop Gotham Games is located. It's pretty good as inde retro shops go, they started off in humble beginnings near the market, but have since moved a few streets to a 2 floored corner shop with a room of arcade machines, which is pretty impressive. Anyway snagged these three while I was there. Athlete Kings is in good condition, but Steep Slope Sliders and Wipeout 2097 are mint. There's no scratches on the discs at all. The prices were ok too, Steep Slope Sliders and Athlete Kings were £5, while Wipeout was £10.

BTW Sega Rally in a plastic PAL case may not be as common as you think. If you find a nice one you may want to keep it for your own collection if all you have is the cardboard one. I got the plastic case version for free 2 months ago, probably one of my biggest scores so far. Virtua Fighter 2 was a real pain in the arse to get plastic, but I found one for a fiver last month, along with Virtua Cop 2's plastic case variant as well. While you can usually get most plastic case variants of games for the price of it's card one, occasionally you do get the odd sod who think's they're worth more- I've seen this happen with the plastic versions of Exhumed, Bomberman, Street Fighter Alpha 2 (one I really want as I have a disc only copy), Panzer Dragoon 2, Die Hard Arcade, Virtual On, and a few others which are pretty uncommon. Unlike what most believe, plastic cases came into use some time into 1997, not late 96/ very early in 97. A game which is pretty easy to track down in both plastic and cardboard versions is Manx TT, I think this was released right at the point they switched over to the plastic ones, sometime in late March, in fact it might've even been mid-97 when they first appeared. Also, I'm uncertain over this one existing, but was there a plastic case variant of Virtua Cop 1? At some point I think I've seen one, though it could be my mind playing tricks on me.

Just got this off someone on Shpock today. It was on there for a while, first being listed at £55 around a month ago, but the seller dropped it in price to £40 recently. Been wanting to own a King Of Fighters game for a while after playing one of them at the National Videogame Arcade in Nottingham, and with this I saw my chance. Once I went to collect the item (his house was only 5 minutes away), I got in a chat with him about Sega and games, and you know the gumtree seller of the 4 games I posted about earlier in this thread? Well, after I talked about getting House Of The Dead off there to him, he mentions he may've bought this very KOF 95 off of him too a while ago... Small world huh? Also, I'm pretty damn sure I've bought some Mega Drive games at a car boot off the same guy from Shpock as well. Anyway, It's in ok condition. The outer cardboard box has taken a beating, as it's been sellotaped over time, but the case, disc, and RAM cart are all in excellent condition. Unfortunately, the manual was missing, and although I can't find any scans online, I'm pretty sure it contains all of the fighters moves. Now, I know I can just look them up GameFAQs or something, but I've always found that I remember them better if I read them from the manuals. It was like that with Street Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive when I got it with it's manual, but when I searched for the moves for SF Alpha 2 (my copy has no manual), I could barely remember them after a few days. If anyone has a spare PAL manual for KOF 95, speak up. Looking for around £5 or less.

I might keep an eye out for auctions. I may end up grabbing that instead of Silhouette Mirage this year. We´ll see! Whatever price you pay for it, it's bloody worth it anyway. There's so much play-ability in it, with it's multiple paths and endings, and how the game becomes a almost completely different experience with each character, not to mention it's brilliant co-op + battle mode. Seriously, don't even think about getting Silhouette Mirage when you can get Guardian Heroes. I wouldn't pay over £80 for it though.

Damn. 50 quid? That´s a great price. I always see it for 100 + Usually goes for £50ish on auctions, so occasionally you do get someone who doesn't want to hike the price up more and just sell it for a fair price. There's been 2 auctions recently where it was £50, a BIN which just got bought a few days ago again for £50, and even one from last month for £45! If you do look hard enough, you can get it at a somewhat reasonable price by today's standards.

VF Remix comes in either the standard cardboard/hard plastic box as well as the big card box containing a generic double CD case ( who knows what this combo was about!). VF2 can be found in the proper EU plastic DVD style case though. Yeah it is pretty odd as to why they did that case. Anyway, getting back onto the topic of new games, this bad boy arrived in the post today... It cost £50, which, despite being a bit steep (and the most I'm probably ever going to spend on a Saturn game), is about the cheapest you'll be able to get it nowadays. Worth every penny too, it's bloody brilliant. Then again that is to be expected, it's a Treasure game after all, they are responsible for my favorite Mega Drive game Gunstar Heroes so of course it's great. This is probably going to be my last Saturn purchase for 1-2 months, I only have just over £100 now from Christmas which I intend to spend on other stuff. Besides, this will keep me going for a while.

I think the big cardboard version came before the standard EU case version, as the manual in the latter version in also squared and not rectangular, they probably used old stock. You talked about plastic case for this game, did you ever see one ? I think so, but it was off someone who bought plastic case versions of football games in bulk and printed off covers of some of his cardboard case games to swap out the discs and manuals, so I don't know if it was an ultra rare variant or just one with a printed cover, Tried putting my copy of the game in a plastic case just to see if it will fit, but the manual had some problems, so it's very unlikely Sega did this.

Got SFA Warrior's Dreams and a VF Remix with the Cardbox! These two were bought for collection purposes because in terms of SF and VF series, SFA2 and VF2 are the games i actually take time to play. B Speaking of rares and variants as Madroms talked about. In the US, the Tall box version of VF Remix is incredibly rare. Going for $100 or more. The more common is the jewel case version included with the Saturn. Same goes for the PAL version of this in the standard case for that time (cardboard/plastic ones), although it's more of a case of it being rare but not usually expensive. The one I'm talking about has only been on ebay once these past few months, and I have no idea how it goes with the big cardboard case that came with it, or why that packaging of it even exists considering there was already the CD case for it. Madroms- do you know anything about this one?

You know in Kung Fu films when the hero beats up a biggish, roughish guy near the end, but then an even bigger badder beast of a man pops up for the final showdown? That's Madroms. The master of Saturn game knowledge, much respect. Anyway, I didn't even dare to separate out the different country versions. I've collected a few plastic case versions, perhaps Exhumed or SF Alpha 2 were the hardest to find of mine. I think Sych has been looking for some for years- maybe Bug Too for example? Saturn Bomberman is also HTF in plastic Case, and also very expensive. For a list of known European games with standard and plastic case released: www.satakore.com/minorrevisions.php (look at European games the description "This game has 2 different cases."). You can also see other variants known. Another list for revisions: www.satakore.com/revisions.php Both lists are WIP, we may find some new revisions/variants in the future. It is really a hard task! I don't have Bug Too listed as a game rereleased with plastic case. Any picture anyone so I can be sure about its existence before adding it to the site ? Well, after scouring the net for a good 20 minutes for one (something I'm not too proud of!), I couldn't find any pics of it at all, in fact the only bit of evidence I could find of a plastic case version was at www.sega-saturn.net/palbuyersguide/overview.htm, of which hasn't been updated in a while. Fairly certain there was a plastic case of this one though, I'm sure I've seen it somewhere.

After a tough decision by myself and my parents, we decided that it would be better to hang on to the Saturn I currently have (the problems kick in after around 2 hours, which isn't too bad) until it finally dies, then get a replacement one. Despite it being an easy fix, my parents are pretty wary of replacing parts of a games console after a previous attempt to fix my old DS back when I was 7 didn't go so well...
But the good news is, after some compromising, that they will pay for half of the replacement, since they know I want to spend the remaining money I have from Christmas on some stuff I really want.
When I'm able to post in the buying and selling forum, I'll try and see if anyone has a spare PAL Model 1 Saturn, but until then, I'll have to make do with my dying Saturn and keep a close eye on Ebay, Gumtree, etc.
