Sounds to me that the unit is going bad over time, so it's either overheating, or some component inside is broken and can only function for a short time. My first guess is that the power supply is going bad, since that is the most common problem with model 1s. Yeah, I'm now 90% certain it's the power supply. Once again I had a go on the Saturn today with Fighting Vipers, played it through with no problems but when I put in another disc it wouldn't work, and only resulted in lots of noise from the Saturn. Is replacing the power supply an easy fix, or am I better off getting a replacement console?

Possible it's not the disc drive. Messed up sound effects could be a system board error. Maybe even power supply. Wait for Zyrobs input If it is the drive:... Keep the saturn, save up your allowance (adults love that). Wait for a Rhea or Phoebe order window. Open your saturn and find out what kind ribbon cable it uses. gdemu.wordpress.com/details/saturn-details/As soon as you load Panzer Saga on that SD card, it will pay for itself five times over. Told my parents about it and even if I saved my money up for it, they consider it to be piracy and won't let me have it- even though they let me get a Pseudo Saturn cart so I can get burned games later down the line . Update on the situation- managed to get it working again today, yet inconsistently. Earlier today, my sister decided to play Sonic R, but lo and behold, the Saturn was working. After she finished a few races, I went on House Of The Dead, one of the games that had the most problems, and it played fine. I also had a quick go on Nights, and it worked as well. It seemed like the Saturn had fixed itself. But problems were afoot after I tried Fighting Vipers, a game I hadn't tried yesterday. After a very lengthy load time for the title screen, all of the level's music was delayed by about 15-30 seconds, or didn't play at all. Against all odds, I actually completed it, but once I'd finished off B.M, the credits music played, but not the credits themselves! It was now sadly apparent that maybe the Saturn hadn't been fixed. Tried Nights to truly determine if it was happening again, and unfortunately, the answer was yes. However, once again, Daytona USA miraculously still worked! It is one of the main reasons I bought a Sega Saturn, so at least there's that. Looks like I'm gonna have to get a replacement Saturn unless there's anything else I can do .

Okay, after just 2 months of owning it, my Saturn's disc drive has gone kaput... sort of. It started today, while I was playing Sonic R. I started a Time Trial up, but it took about 15 seconds for any sound effects or music to come in. I thought it was pretty odd, but thought nothing of it. It happened again afterwards on the menus, and that was when I realized something wasn't right. I tried another game, Daytona USA, but everything worked fine. Played through the game's 3 tracks with no issues... but when I tried Nights, things got pretty bad. The intro wouldn't play, and I couldn't go on any of the levels with out being taken back to the Saturn's control panel seconds later. After trying every level, I reset the Saturn, and the game wouldn't play altogether, I could only play the music off of the disc. Tried Daytona again, but aside from a few longer loading times, everything was okay. However, when I tried Nights one last time, it was even worse. The Saturn's disc motor chugged so much I thought the damn thing was gonna explode, now it wouldn't even play the tracks, and the Saturn said "Disc format not compatible" or something like that. I then stupidly tried House Of The Dead, which already made the disc motor chug lots, and the Saturn froze completely. Reset it, and it said the same thing as Nights. I tired Sonic R again, hoping it would solve the problem some how, and for a minute it looked like it had aside from a few long loading times and a noisy disc motor. Unfortunately, what I was greeted with when I started a race was pretty bad. The Saturn had froze, and all the graphics were corrupted. I switched the Saturn off immediately and tried no more discs out of fear of something worse. None of the games above had disc rot and little to no scratches. The Saturn (a model 1) had came from someone who said they barely played it, and I have never played on it for more than 2 hours, and very rarely daily. Never done the disc swap technique before, and it's very unlikely the previous owner did. The laser looks fine, but I really hope the damn thing isn't dying, because if it is, I'll obviously have to replace it, which I know nothing about, same goes for the motor. If I have to buy a new Saturn altogether, I don't think my parents will be very happy about it at all. Please help me on this guys .

Welcome back to the Saturn, and welcome to the forums!
The fact that you've learnt Japanese is great- Now you won't have to pay £200+ for those rarer RPG's and games from 1998! Anyway, what games do you have in mind of buying? I presume you kept all your old games, so that's good from the start, and even better if you have some rare ones.
If you're interested in buying a JPN console you'll either have to mod it or buy the Action Replay 4M auto to play your PAL games, I'd suggest the Action Replay personally, as it gives you more storage for saves and some cheats to boot as well.

After seeing how highly game prices have been rising recently, I had decided that keeping in style with how I bought the Saturn itself, I will only be buying games off sites like shpock and gumtree, unless I see them cheaper on Ebay. That has paid off today. House Of The Dead was £30, around £30-£40 cheaper than most prices right now. Exhumed was £5- once a cheap game but has been rising steadily to around £20. Street Fighter Alpha 2 was £2.50, unboxed, but that's still pretty good. And what I consider to be the best game I've bought for the Saturn so far- hell, best game so far period- was Nights Into Dreams. First game I played once I got back from the purchase, and goddamn it's great. And the best part was? It cost £2.50, in it's CD case. £2.50. And it's in mint condition too to boot. Very pleased with this purchase. Definitely the best one so far- and that's saying something considering I got Sega Rally for free last month.

2017 already got off to a great start for me as a person who just got into Saturn. In the space of just 3 days I've bought Virtua Fighter Remix, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop 2, Daytona USA, Sega Touring Car Championship, Panzer Dragoon and a MK2 controller, adding up to just £40 overall. Plus, I'm buying some games off a Gumtree seller that I've got some stuff off before, and all of them are bargains. Nights Into Dreams for £2.50 (yes really), Exhumed for £5, and House Of The Dead for £30, which is not that bad of a price considering that it's been going up in price over the past few months.
Also, because I'm only 13 and on a budget here, at some point I might burn some of the rarer games onto discs, like Burning Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga. If that fails and it turns out I'm terrible at disc burning, I might have a look around on Etsy to see if I can find a seller that does them cheap.
Anyway, now that I've got the majority of arcade titles out of the way, I'm gonna focus more on some exclusives, or at least games that didn't come out in the arcades. Here they are ranked in order of which I want the most.
1. Guardian Heroes 2. Virtua Cop 3. Fighters Megamix 4. Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei 5. Marvel Super Heroes 6. Shining The Holy Ark 7. Resident Evil 8. Virtual On: Cyber Troopers 9. Die Hard Arcade 10. Quake 11. Manx TT Super Bike 12. Athelete Kings 13. Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 2 14. Last Bronx 15. Sonic 3D
Hopefully I won't use up all of my pocket money buying these as I do want to spend it on other things, like PS4 games and clothes. I think I'll fit most of them in though.

Welcome Well kid if I was relying on my parents to buy me everything like when I was a teenage virus, I would have got no where with playing the games I did. You should stick to CD-Rs so you can atleast play the games and if they buy them or you get money then buy them and save them.I did back then, my parents did buy me games but not if they where 100$ or more. Also when I was 13 kids wanted the new ground breaking graphics and my friends could have cared less about outdated games as they where called. I assume your for gameplay over graphics? Yeah I'm not too bothered about the actual graphics of any games at all. I've owned a Mega Drive since I was 9 and a few of my friends have some older consoles too. Obviously the advent of the internet has meant we've learnt a lot more about older games and consoles than when you were my age and its thanks to it I've heard of the amazing games the Saturn has. Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome everyone! Been looking into Pseudo Saturn, and it doesn't seem too hard to flash my AR cart. Yes, it does remove the cheats and extra save file blocks, but that's not much of a sacrifice considering that it'll enable the Saturn to play so many great games. Where I can, I'll buy the Japanese version of the game if there isn't too much Japanese speech or text, but for games like Burning Rangers or pretty much any RPG's, I will have to burn them onto some CD-R's. Any chance I get to buy these games for cheap, I would get it in a heartbeat- but I can't see that happening anytime soon.

Hi all. Name's Ted, and I might be younger than most of you would expect- I'm only 13.
I've known of the Saturn for a very long time now (since I was 8 and obsessed with Sonic) and it's always intrigued me somewhat. Why it failed so badly, and why it had brilliant 2D capabilities at a time when 3D was becoming the new standard. And just a few months ago I finally got one.
The bundle I bought came with with Sonic R and Command and Conquer, which aren't exactly the best of what the Saturn has to offer, but I got it for the cheap price of £35, a great deal considering that from the looks of it, it's currently going for £50+ with no games on Ebay right now.
Since then, I've bought a Action Replay cart for £30, and a small selection of games, like Sonic Jam, Fighting Vipers and Panzer Dragoon, all £10, plus a Steering Wheel for £10 as well, but by far my best deals were Sega Rally and Firestorm Thunderhawk 2 completely free from a very nice little shop near me
I also just got £250 from my family for Christmas, and while I am buying some clothes and PS4 games with that money, £100 of it is going to be exclusively spent on Saturn stuff. Already got my eye on some games, like Guardian Heroes, the Virtua Fighter series, Daytona USA, Nights Into Dreams (+ the 3D controller), Virtua Cop 1 & 2, and House Of The Dead, of which I am getting next weekend off Gumtree
Can't wait to get into importing- stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers are far out of my reach, so it's really the only option for me other than burning games onto CD-R's and doing the disc swap trick, which I really only would want to do as a last resort.
