Sure, I'm just saying the capacitor can't be it because I didn't add one I'm quite experienced with soldering so that shouldn't be a issue, here are some pictures: Here's the old TOP202 compared to the new ones The biggest solder point looks to be covering a trace.

I highly doubt adding a single capacitor would blow the fuse through stress. Sounds like you caused a short with soldering. Recheck all the connections. If worst comes to the worst, I have a Saturn model II (PAL) we might be able to do a deal on. Before that check the connections, and get new fuses.

My Model 1 Saturn recently started acting up. If I reset the console after about an hour of playtime, I get horizontal lines/bars rolling over the image. I read up about the problem and the common fix seems to be to replace the TOP202YAI and/or add a capacitor. So I've ordered some replacement TOP202YAIs from China, and installed one. Immediately after powering it on the fuse went off. I don't have much experience in repairing power supplies, so any advice what to do next would be helpful. Are my new TOP202s bad? They have slightly different markings and are made in Philippines instead of Malaysia, but that can't be relevant, right? Thanks. Was the capacitor on the PSU?

Fair enough. I have one of those newer AR4 carts for my PAL Saturn. Problem is it's glitchy. They have a high lemon rate too apparently. Also, don't the old AR carts damage the cart slot? IIRC the PCB is wider than Sega's carts. It's glitch because the cart slot is glitch. Which is also the reason why the ARs self destruct. They hold their firmware in a writable flash rom, so if something goes wrong with the cart connection, there's a good chance for a bad write to go through, bricking the firmware. This happens on new and old cards the same. also, the pcbs thickness is the same on all the cards. That's an old rumour, it was proven wrong. Mine works some times, and not others. Then it appeared to have lost the saves stored on it, but the reappeared later. Weird.

Saturn emulation was pretty dodgy last time I tried it. I also prefer original hardware. I have quite a lot of consoles. And what are your top 3 favorite consoles? Quite a question. PS1 is my favourite. Dreamcast 2nd. Megadrive or GameCube 3rd.

Ah, ok. That's weird though, as Ridge Racer on PS1 fits entirely in the 3.5 MB of RAM. The Saturn has 4MB, so I'd of imagined better than Speccy level homebrew. There probably is the potential for more but I haven't fully explored that function as I mainly use the Datalink to transfer game saves to and from my Saturn to Pc/Laptop. I'm probably the least tech svay member on this website. My knowledge is on actual Saturn games in general. I still don't know what emulation is and how people use it. I'm too set in my old school ways. Original disc, original hardware that's me. Saturn emulation was pretty dodgy last time I tried it. I also prefer original hardware. I have quite a lot of consoles.

Fits your usage then. I just play original games on my Saturn. Same here I'm all about original games. These homebrews are nothing special though as they can only be the size of the system memory. They're more like spectrum looking games and I only have the few that came with the Datalink. Ah, ok. That's weird though, as Ridge Racer on PS1 fits entirely in the 3.5 MB of RAM. The Saturn has 4MB, so I'd of imagined better than Speccy level homebrew.

IIRC the PCB is wider than Sega's carts. Nope. The old carts are the best carts. The EMS carts with the comms port ontop are the best versions of AR carts they And they are so reliable. The newer ones are so flimsey. Plus you can transfer your saves to your pc/laptop on the old ones as well as send games saves to other members online. I've already sent my game saves to 2 other Saturn gamers via email because they couldn't be bothered to unlock all the characters and translate all the wrestlers names to English on Fire Pro Wrestling Six Man Scramble. Plus I use the AR cart to run homebrew games on my Saturn. Fits your usage then. I just play original games on my Saturn.

No idea then. I gave up on my AR4 and bought a JP Saturn and actual 1&4MB RAM carts. I also don't use the internal memory. I have an extremely manly, bright pink, brand new memory cart in my Saturn that came with Tamagotchi Park. No interest as such in the game, but it was new and came with the cart for £22. Bargain. It's also always recognised, unlike my black & grey used memory carts! It's funny because it was the exact opposite for me. My very first Saturn I had back in the 90s, I was constantly switching between 4meg, 1meg and official memory cart and the cartridge slot broke down in the end. Mind you I was Metal Slug and X-Men vs Streetfighter obsessed back then so cartridges were constantly being swapped out. Not to mention I was Playing PDS in between that requires no carts so after play I would have to insert the memory cartridge to back up my PDS saves as it doesn't work during gameplay. I've had the same AR cart for over 15 years with one incident where it wiped recently but that was down to me fiddling with the USB Datalink and not understanding how to set it up when I first bought it. But the greatest asset to the AR has been the cheat functions for me. I'm not talking about the lame stuff like infinite lives e.t.c but stuff like being able to use characters in certain games that are not playable under any circumstances, weapons allocation on games like Resident Evil e.t.c. The AR cheats function added some serious longevity to games I had long stopped playing. Fair enough. I have one of those newer AR4 carts for my PAL Saturn. Problem is it's glitchy. They have a high lemon rate too apparently. Also, don't the old AR carts damage the cart slot? IIRC the PCB is wider than Sega's carts.

Hmm. Maybe the model II draws less power from the battery or something? My stepdown converter no longer hums uber loud, so a I'm fine with using that on my JP Saturn. It could be that or it could be to do with usage maybe. But that wouldn't make sense as my Saturn gets constant play. I'm thinking that it might actually be the system needs the 1 memory block for the system clock to function properly as I know AR cheats require this as well. Games with cheat codes attached won't actually boot up unless there's one free block of internal memory. No idea then. I gave up on my AR4 and bought a JP Saturn and actual 1&4MB RAM carts. I also don't use the internal memory. I have an extremely manly, bright pink, brand new memory cart in my Saturn that came with Tamagotchi Park. Dunno about that. Sega couldn't bring the chip count down AFAIK. Which Saturn are you using? I have a Japanese White Model 2 Switchless Reset Saturn with a Uk power board so no need for a step down converter. Hmm. Maybe the model II draws less power from the battery or something? My stepdown converter no longer hums uber loud, so a I'm fine with using that on my JP Saturn.

3? Damn. They usually only last around one lol. It's funny as I hear alot of people say that. But so far all my Saturn batteries have lasted 2 years plus. Maybe it's to do with certain models of Saturns. Dunno about that. Sega couldn't bring the chip count down AFAIK. Which Saturn are you using?

Fair enough. The CR2032 batteries are pretty cheap. I got 20 for like £7 IIRC. The one in my Saturn has been going for like 5 months. Yeah the batteries are pretty cheap and do tend to last a very long time. The current battery I'm on has so far lasted for over 3 years. Not surprising it may be on its way out. 3? Damn. They usually only last around one lol.
