I'll start...
Virtua Fighter 2 is mine. Looks nice and smooth, a great tech demo. And fun enough for 2 players. But I find the characters forgettable, the moves uninspiring and the movement too... Floaty. Much much prefer Street Fighter games which are so much faster and more exciting.
As a bonus entry I have a lot of nostalgia for good old Sonic 1, particularly the music or watching people play it, but i don't actually enjoy playing it much myself. I esepcially hate it when his inertia makes it almost impossible to walk up a slope.

I once thought the same about VF2. This game takes a lot of time to master. Once you have, it becomes sublime.

This is actually a tough one for me. Pretty much all of the hyped up or well received games I do indeed like a lot. Even the RPG games that Im just getting into now im loving. Its possible this is because for me its the other way around. There are dozens of generally disliked Saturn games I love It doesnt really even count but maybe my pick is Sega Rally? I only say that when its considered #1 by this forum but I think its good but not in my Top 20. I liked it as a kid, never would say I loved it. So yeah probably the closest I can get to answer for this thread but not really since I actually like it

I never understood the fuss over Sonic when it first released. I had been playing platform games like Rolling Thunder, Shinobi, Turrican, Rick Dangerous, Monty on the Run, Manic Miner and Ghouls'n Ghosts which were platform games you had to think before you jumped and where you might need to be pixel perfect... A lot of that was missing from Sonic and was all too easy to play carelessly and survive. I prefer Kid Chameleon.

Fighters Megamix and Sega Rally come most to mind.

I prefer Kid Chameleon. I tried so many times to complete that when I was younger, failed on every attempt.

Vampire Savior. I get that this game is supposed to be graphically amazing, but I just don't get it. Nothing in there makes me go "wow", even when I make a deliberate effort to study it - and like most Capcom fighters, everything happens too fast for you to pay any real attention to the graphics while you're actually playing the game anyway.
Mainly though, the controls don't do it for me. There's not a variety of moves for you to tap into, so you're pretty much left with spamming two attacks to achieve victory. And the old button layout of fast attack/medium attack/strong attack just isn't intuitive to me. I prefer Virtua Fighter 2 style, where A, B, and C are assigned to radically different moves. This greater distinction between the functions of the buttons makes it a lot easier to remember.
Also, a nitpick really, but having the English option only available after you've done a one-credit-completion on hard mode? Seems pretty ridiculous. One-credit-completion is something you only do if you're the hardest of hardcore players of the game, whereas an English option is something that players of all skill levels would want.

I grew up with Mario 1,2,3 then jumped to Genesis for Sonic 2,3,SN . It was the perfect contrast of play and graphical style that I loved both series. As much as I enjoyed the fast Sonic gameplay, I loved the atmosphere more. The music, background art of Sonic games... I can remember just about every stage paired with its music in all of the Sonic titles. (except for Sonic 1. I joined the Genesis at Sonic 2 so my trilogy is 2, 3, Knuckles). This is also true for the Super Mario NES titles 1-2-3.

Fighters Megamix In 50Hz the controls are unresponsive and combined with the cheap A.I., the game is almost unplayable. In 60Hz, however, it's much more enjoyable, but still overrated, in my opinion. And many of the hidden characters aren't really playable (like the Daytona car, for example).
Guardian Heroes While it's filled with great animation, a wonderful soundtrack, and lots of innovative ideas, I find the gameplay repetitive, so after a few levels, it becomes boring for me.

I agree about Megamix, similar to the problems mentioned above with VF2. Love Guardian Heroes though.

Shining Force 3, ugh, maybe it's just because I suck at it or I just never figured out all the nuances. but I hate it.
Astal, the graphics are pretty, but the game plays like a sack of crap. It's like running around as a huge brick with poor hit detection.

It took me 2 battles before I got the hang of it. Then i was hooked. Very addicting. Im having the same type of moment while playing Holy Ark. Never played a dungeon grinder game before but after a few hours im into it and its also addicting.

Guardian Heroes, something about it just never sat well with me, I can appreciate it's technical and artistic merits but meh, just not for me.
