How playable are Linkle Liver Story and MKR in Japanese? I see LLS is grade B in the Japanese playability list, which surprised me. I would imagine MKR is playable without knowing JPN but there is a lot of text/talking in the game. The cute/weird story is actually part of the fun IMO. Working Designs added the diaries which I enjoyed quite a bit.

Great piece of infos here, especially the missed attempts on shooter packs. For sure if those Tecnosoft games made it to the US, and with Working Designs behind them, you'd see some tremendous price tags on them today.Well, I guess JP release of shooters may still be enough. Plot is "save the universe". So I went back on the GW forum to dig up Vics direct quotes about these. We had giant signs for it at E3 that I pulled down. Pretty sure it was public knowledge. It was 4 Tecnosoft shooters. Hyper Duel/Thunderforce Gold Pack 1 and Blast Wind/Thunderforce Gold Pack 2. Pretty sure that's the way I had it split. Four games, two skus. And they were really good shooters.
Then when someone asked about Thunderforce V coming over as well The idea of getting the TF gold packs out with the shooter megapack was to get people into TF more here, and it would have led to TF V on the Saturn if the Saturn hadn't had Bernie killing it actively. I don't think we announced it, but it was definitely in the plans. So in the US we should have gotten those 2 shooter packs plus ThunderForce V had things played out differently... luckily they are just shooters, something that didn't need translating, but I would have loved to see what WD would have done as far as cool packaging in the big Saturn cases for them. Imagine that, in the west we really only got 2 real 32 bit shooters (DG and GA) but we should have had, without much effort: - Thunderforce Pack 1 - Thunderforce Pack 2 - Blast Wind - HyperDuel - Thunderforce V How easily the perception of the genre in the NA library would have changed. The crazy thing too is they were advertising them at E3. Perhaps had Sega not pissed them off with the weird booth placement they would have still come out.

Well, I've started playing Pandemonium and .... yeah, I dig it. I've been putting it off because I wasn't sure that I would like it, fearing it would be another kinda average platformer, but it's not. The graphics look really pretty, especially in 2.5D glory, and the music is awesome. The gameplay is also pretty solid too, although they seem a bit stingy on lives. I'm constantly starting a new level with 1 or 0 extra lives and ultimately game over, having to restart the stage from scratch. The two initial heart containers don't help either, since they're easily lost. But apart from those beefs, it seems pretty cool. Ive owned a Saturn copy for so long and have yet to play it. Really need to. It was a game I used to enjoy reading about as a kid. Oddly I never knew there was a Saturn version until many years later.

, and do you know if the planned US version of the main game was used to help produce the eventual PS translation? Anthaemia which US effort are you referring to. The most I was ever told was by Vic on the WD forums about how they were expecting to translate it with the help of Sega securing the rights fees. Frankly I think just about everyone assumed WD would have brought it over because of their relationship with GA. Vic always gets a lot of the same questions on his forum. People always ask why they did Albert Odyssey instead of Grandia and as he always puts it, it wasn't like behind door 1 was AO and behind door 2 was Grandia. The games were actually spread out more from each other. It seemed like GA knew what they had in Grandia and were holding it a bit ransom even despite WD having brought over their Lunar games.

MKR is a hell lot of fun too, WD made the right decision regarding which games to translate. The Working Designs Sega Saturn world was quite a rocky one but overall its a good set. Magic Knight was actually a launch title that stuck in translation and legal hell. Vic (WD president) told me on his new message board a couple years back that he wanted to give up on the title because of all of the trouble but his lead programmer sort of urged him to still get it out. Thus it ended up being the final Western released Saturn game which I actually love. Its a fitting send off for the console. As far as the games WD chose, Vic said he slightly regretted Albert Odyssey. It wasn't the most well received RPG at the time (although WD fixed a ton of issues from the JPN version making it more playable). WD rocky relationship with Sega cost us a lot of really good titles. They had planned to release Lunar Silver Star Story (basically their baby in the US) on the Saturn along with 2 shooter packs that included in total both Thunderforce Gold Packs, HyperDuel and Blast Wind (they actually advertised these at E3 1997 before the booth fiasco). Another RPG they had the right to that he said they might have brought over was Tengai Makyou: The Apocalypse IV. And obviously everyone expected them to do Grandia since they had the relationship with Game Arts. Dragon Force was a great choice obviously, and the only WD game to make it Europe luckily for everyone. Iron Storm is the most underrated choice. Considered by some to be one of the greatest war sims to come to the US ever. But its not a sexy RPG so it gets a bit lost. Magic Knight Rayearth is a great one. Its just has a lot of charm and its easy to pick up and play. <iframe width="19.24000000000001" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 19.24000000000001px; height: 3.240000000000009px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_61475516" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="19.24000000000001" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 19.24px; height: 3.24px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 907px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_82087963" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="19.24000000000001" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 19.24px; height: 3.24px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 103px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_19376558" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="19.24000000000001" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 19.24px; height: 3.24px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 907px; top: 103px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_27203519" scrolling="no"></iframe> Sega Ages and Shining Wisdom were ok choices in their own right but probably not 100% necessary for them to do. Although Sega Ages was actually a freebie that Sega of Europe gave them in a trade for their Dragon Force translation.

Picked up a complete copy of Shining Wisdom. Puts me at 4/6 for the Working Designs set...leaving me with Sega Ages (too expensive for what it is) and Magic Knight Rayearth left. Very nice. I got most of the WD early on which helped. Hopefully you're not going for disc variants too Magic Knight Rayearth is the only one I got the disc variants before but only because I fell into them. I know some people who do this get 3 complete copies but for me all I wanted was one complete copy and then the other 2 discs with sleeves to put in the same case.

Great work so far, there seems to have been a lot of hurdles but hopefully work arounds can be found. Even if this was only partially completed it would definitely get me to finally play Grandia on the Saturn.

Good topic. Never thought about it before.
Of course shooters get the most replay because they are addicting but the Saturn version of Duke and Quake I will run through from start to finish sometimes twice a year. To me they are very easy to pick up and play.
My top 5 games that have logged the most hours overall are probably
1. Duke Nukem 3D 2. Galactic Attack 3. Darius Gaiden (this one is gaining in the ranks) 4. Quake 5. Battle Garegga

When I was a kid, I didn't get my PS1 until late 98 or early 99 (Just had a Saturn from Xmas 96 until Spring 98, then got an N64)
One of the first games I rented was Resident Evil 2. It was one of the most amazing game experiences Id ever had and totally got me addicted to the survival horror genre.
I never went back to play RE1 until the DS version came out in 2006 but only played it for a couple hours.
I also never had the Sega Saturn version as a kid, but used to look at the review for it all the time in Game mags.
But finally so many years ago I finally gave RE1 a proper play through, the Saturn version and I loved it. It was one of the most satisfying start to finish Saturn experiences Ive ever had even going back to 97. Its such a good port that was done with the Saturns strengths and weaknesses in mind.

Picked up a copy of Hardcore 4x4. It's somehow better and worse than I expected, but it's one I'm glad to have in the collection. Brave soul! It was actually the first Saturn game I ever found at a garage sale for 25 cents probably 15 years ago lol

Personally between the 2 cartoony platformers we got in the west We got a heck of a lot more than two cartoony platformers in the west. Pandemonium!, Clockwork Knight, Clockwork Knight 2, Bug!, Bug Too!, Gex... Right but I think I was just comparing the 2 in particular because of the western regions, each got 1 of them as opposed to the ones you mentioned were shared by all regions.
